Create a DFS link

Setting up a distributed file system (DFS) link as a shared folder makes the link available for use when you specify a local file storage area folder during creation.

NOTE  DFS is supported if you are using it to manage a file storage area; however, the replication feature of DFS is not supported.

CAUTION  Take care when implementing DFS links to shared folders on remote servers. Make sure that anyone who might create a file storage area using a DFS link to a shared folder on a remote server knows where the shared folder is physically located.

To set up a DFS link

  1. From the Start menu, select Programs > Administrative Tools > Distributed File System.
  2. In the MMC tree view, right-click Distributed File System and select New Dfs Root.
  3. Complete the wizard to create a new DFS, making sure to select the standalone option.
  4. Right-click the new DFS root created on your local server and select New Dfs Link.
  5. Complete the fields in the Create a New Dfs Link screen and click OK
  6. Close the MMC console.
