About Application Engine

Application Engine is the IBM FileNet P8 Platform component that hosts the Workplace Web application, Workplace java applets, and application development tools. Application Engine provides protection for user credentials that are passed between those applications and Content Engine, and if configured, provides SSL security.

Workplace Web application

From the Workplace application, end users can access Content Engine object stores and Process Engine workflow operations. See Workplace administration for an overview of Workplace features.

Microsoft Office and Outlook Integration

Integration with Microsoft Office and Outlook provides Web-based access to object stores through these applications. Through this integration, users can easily find and open Office documents, Outlook e-mail messages, and tasks and contacts in an object store.

Users can navigate through folders, documents, and stored searches within the object stores. In an Outlook e-mail message, users can insert hyperlinks to objects such as folders, documents, stored searches, and copies of the objects.

Users or administrators download the Office Integration installation program to their workstations, where it runs locally. To download from Workplace, use General Author tools.

Content Java and Process Java APIs

The Content Java API and the Process Java API provide programmatic access to object stores and workflows.

The Content Java API allows a developer to create platform-neutral applications that access P8 functionality, and provides networked, Java-based access to commonly used objects and methods within the Content COM API.

The Process Java API provides access to the runtime, administration, configuration, and workflow functionality supported in Process Engine. It provides the means to create, validate, and modify workflow definitions.
