Exporting objects from an object store

This topic explains in general terms how Enterprise Manager assists with the export process. See Export Content Engine objects for specific instructions.

Export manifest

The Enterprise Manager tree view provides an Export Manifest node, contained in an object store node. The export manifest is a temporary container for references to all the objects you want to export.

From the tree view, you can select an object store and add all its object types and associated content to an export manifest by using a menu option. As an alternative, you can select an object type and selectively add its associated objects to the export manifest.

Using choice lists as an example, after adding choice lists to the export manifest, you can select the Export Manifest > Choice Lists node to view those choice lists in the details pane. The details pane shows that subscriptions are associated with choice lists. A "Yes" indicates that, if the choice list has an associated subscription, it has been added to the manifest. A "No" indicates that the choice list has been added to the manifest without its associated subscription.

The method you use to add a set of objects to the export manifest determines how Enterprise Manager organizes those objects under the Export Manifest node.

For example, assume the Root Folder in Enterprise Manager contains a set of documents you want added to the export manifest. The method you use determines whether Enterprise Manager adds these documents to either the Folders node or the Documents node.

Export include options

Each time you add an object or object type to the export manifest, the Include Options dialog box opens. Use this dialog box to limit which associated objects you want added to the export manifest. The available include options depend on the selected object type.

Some objects have associated objects (such as metadata or relationship objects) that are hidden from view in Enterprise Manager. Therefore, it's important to include those associated objects when you add the object to the export manifest. However, if an export manifest or the target object store already contains those associated objects (through previous exports and imports), you do not need to add those associated objects again.

The Include Options dialog box includes a check box called Do not show me this dialog box for this object type again. If you select this check box, Enterprise Manager uses the currently selected options without presenting the Include Options dialog box. You can re-display this dialog box by changing the user preferences for the Export Manifest node.

Load export manifest from file

You are able to load an existing export manifest file by using the Load From File. For instructions, see Load an export manifest from a file.

Saving the export manifest to a file

After you have finished adding objects to the export manifest, you can export those objects to an XML file.

Exporting objects does not automatically remove them from the export manifest. The export manifest retains all objects until you remove them from the manifest or close Enterprise Manager. However, you can choose to save the export manifest as an XML file to a file of your choice. For instructions, see Save an export manifest.
