To support Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN), Process Designer can save and open files in XPDL 2.0 format. XPDL files can contain more than one workflow definition. In Process Designer, a file with one or more workflow definitions is called a workflow collection. Note that the XPDL 2.0 format is extended to include IBM FileNet scenario definitions.
Single workflow definition
When a workflow collection contains one workflow definition, that workflow definition is identified as the main workflow. When you save this workflow definition using options on either the File menu or the Action menu, it is saved in the native format for Process Designer—PEP file. Note that if the file includes one or more scenario definitions, then the file is saved in XPDL format.
Multiple workflow definitions
If you open an XPDL 2.0 file that was created by a BPMN modeling application, or you have more than one workflow definition or one or more scenario definitions in the workflow collection, when you save the document using File > Save or File > FileNet > FileNet Add/Checkin, the document is saved in XPDL 2.0 format. Note that if you open an XPDL document, it will always be saved as an XPDL document, even if it contains only one workflow definition.
To work on individual workflow definitions, select the workflow from View > Workflows or click the appropriate tab in the workspace. Use the options on the Action menu to specify the Workflow Properties for the current workflow definition.
The options in Process Designer are organized into two areas:
When you use File > Insert options, you are inserting new or existing workflow definitions or scenario definitions into the workflow collection.
When you use File Save or File > FileNet Checkin options, you are saving the entire workflow collection document.
When you use File Validate or Transfer options, you are validating or transferring all workflow definitions in the collection that are specified to be validated or transferred. (For each workflow definition in the collection, you can use options on the Action > Workflow Properties > Advanced dialog box to specify if an individual workflow definition will be validated or transferred when you select those commands on the File menu for the workflow collection.)
When you use Action > Save options, you are saving the current workflow definition or scenario definition to a separate file. When you use Action > Validate, Transfer, or Launch Workflow, those commands apply to the current workflow definition or scenario definition.
