Work with Image Viewer

Use Image Viewer to view image documents stored in Workplace or Workplace XT. You can view, zoom, magnify, scroll, pan, rotate, print, and add annotations to image documents. Image Viewer supports the following file types:

By default, each of these file types opens automatically in Image Viewer; however, your site administrator can configure these file types to open in other programs.

NOTE  Very large monochrome (black and white) GIF files can take a long time to open in Image Viewer. If possible, use TIFF format for black and white images, and use GIF format for color images to speed up the time it takes to load the image.

To display a document using Image Viewer, simply double-click on the document name or its icon in a Browse, Search, or Task Step Attachment page. If the document is stored in an Image Services library, you must provide your user name and password for that library.

Documents with multiple content elements open as a single image with multiple pages in Image Viewer. Only the appropriate image files are opened. For example, you might have a document composed of three separate bitmap files and one word processing file. Clicking the file name link in Workplace opens all three bitmap files, with the first content element selected as page 1, provided that you have appropriate access rights to each file. For more information, see Manage compound documents.

The first time you select Image Viewer, there is a short wait while the Java™ applet is downloaded to your system. You can grant one session or grant always, which saves having to answer the prompt each time. For more information on downloading the Java applet, see Use Java Applets.

After you give permission to download the applet, the document opens in Image Viewer. Image Viewer remains available for opening other documents as long as your browser remains open. When you exit the browser, Image Viewer is no longer available.

Tools for modifying your view of the image are in the toolbar at the top of the window along with icons for file operations (open, save, print, etc.). Additional tools and status messages appear at the bottom of the windows.

Image Viewer Window

The Image Viewer window displays the selected image along with toolbars, scroll bars, menus, and annotations. Status messages are displayed at the bottom of the window. The following example window identifies the control elements in the Image Viewer window.

Displaying Help

You can display this Help text while in Image Viewer either by clicking the Help icon or by pressing the F1 key on your keyboard. You can access additional help topics from the Help Table of Contents.

Keyboard navigation

You can use standard Java™ key commands. For example, use the arrow keys to scroll a document that is larger than the window. Up and down arrow keys scroll the image vertically. Left and right arrow keys scroll horizontally. Home goes to the left or top edge, depending on which scroll bar is active (has focus). End goes to the right or top edge. Insert goes to the middle.

You can cycle through icons on the toolbar or the icons beneath the image using Tab to go forward or Shift + Tab to go backward. Press Enter or Return to perform a function when its icon is selected.
