Create export files
To extract objects from an object store, you use Enterprise Manager to perform the following tasks:
- Create an export manifest that identifies the objects that are to be exported from the object stores in the source environment.
- Extract those objects into the export files. For a description of the export files, see Concepts: exporting and importing.
To create an export manifest
- In Enterprise Manager, expand Object Stores and navigate to the object you want to export.
- Right-click the object, and then click All Tasks > Add to Export Manifest.
You can choose to include a single object, all objects in an object store, or all objects of a specific type in the export manifest. See the following guidelines for information on which objects to include in the export manifest. For more information about how to select objects, see Add objects to an export manifest.
To create the export files
- In Enterprise Manager, navigate to the object store from which you are exporting objects.
- Right-click Export Manifest and then click All Tasks > Export All Objects.
- Specify the export options:
- Leave the Include modified parent class definitions check box selected to export the parent class for any subclass definition that is included in the export manifest.
- If you want to retain the security permissions on the exported objects or if you intend to extract a security principal half map from the import manifest file, select Export Security Options.
- Specify the other options as described in Choose export options.
Best practice: Consider exporting content associated with objects to an external folder by leaving the default value or specifying a different folder name in the Content Folder field. If you do not specify a folder, Enterprise Manager embeds associated content, such as documents and annotations, in the export files.
The export, convert asset, and import operations are not affected functionally by the decision to embed content in the export files or export it to an external folder. The end result of these operations is the same in either situation. However, embedding content in the export files has serious disadvantages as follows:
- Enterprise Manager loads each export file into memory in a DOM tree. Embedding content in the export files significantly increases the file size which greatly increases the risk of memory-related performance issues.
- It is more difficult to debug problems in the export files as the content is base64 encoded and must be decoded to be read.
- After the export files are created, right-click Export Manifest and then click All Tasks > Remove All Objects to clear the export manifest. This step prevents you from exporting the same objects twice.
