About General steps

A general step represents an activity in a workflow that will be sent to either one or more workflow participants or to a work queue for processing.

On the workflow map, general steps display as follows:

User step button

A general step assigned to one or more workflow participants, who will receive the work item in their inbox.

Work queue step button

A general step assigned to a work queue for processing by participants or by an automated process.

Unassigned step button

A general step that is not assigned to either participants or to a work queue.

TIP You can use an unassigned step to perform calculations or other tasks.

General steps are the most frequently used kind of step. For a general step, you can define instructions for the participants, specify the data fields and attachments that will be accessible at the step, specify the responses that the participants can select, and other options.
