Restoring the system state (Windows)

If the system state has been damaged by bad sectors, file system errors, or user intervention, you will need to restore it from your backup copy.

If the corruption is due to a minor hard disk problem such as bad sectors:

Use the NT Check Disk utility to correct any bad sector errors. Be sure to scan the whole disk surface.

If you cannot start the system without a boot disk, follow these steps:

  1. Boot the system from a floppy or CD-ROM drive and follow the online instructions.
  2. Start the Repair process and use the Fast Repair option for automatic repairs.
  3. Insert the server's Emergency Repair Disk when prompted and complete the repair process.
  4. Restore the system state from the backup sets if necessary.

If you can start the system as normal:

  • Restore the System State from the backup sets on top of the current system state.
  • If the system is a domain controller, boot the system using the Directory Services Restore Mode to restore the Active Directory and SYSVOL directory.
