Adjusting performance parameters for an isolated region

Two performance parameters are accessible in the isolated region properties in the Process Configuration Console. The parameters are:

Maximum operations per transaction
Maximum instructions per transaction

These parameters set limits on Instruction Sheet Interpreter (ISI) activity by determining when the ISI temporarily ceases processing a work item. During the time that processing is halted, the work item resides in the InstructionSheetInterpreter system queue.

The default setting for the maximum operations parameter is 100; the default value for the maximum instructions parameter is 200. For most Process Engine systems, the default settings are sufficient. It is only necessary to adjust the settings under certain conditions:

  • Workflow maps executing in the isolated region contain 750 to 1000 system instructions between user-defined instructions. To maximize the availability of the ISI and other server resources in this situation, decrease the value of the maximum instructions parameter.

    Conversely, if the InstructionSheetInterpreter system queue is filling up, increase the value of the maximum instructions parameter. You can access the InstructionSheetInterpreter system queue via vwtool, APIs, or the Process Administrator application.

  • The size of the database audit trail is exceeded, preventing further database activity. To alleviate this problem, decrease the value in the maximum database operations parameter, or see the appropriate vendor’s documentation for information on optimizing or increasing the amount of space available for the database audit trail.
  • The amount of time between one step processor dispatching a work item and the next step processor finding and locking that work item is excessive. Decreasing both parameter values can alleviate this situation.
