View and specify attachments

Attachments listed on a work item page link to information (such as documents in a library) you use to complete the work. See About Attachments for general information on attachments.

Check the instructions on the work item page for information about using the attachments in this particular step.

To view or modify an attachment or target

If the attachment is an array, see Edit attachment array rather than the procedure below.

  1. In the open work item, click the Attachments tab to display the list of attachments.
  2. Select the attachment name in the list.
  3. As appropriate, use the tools on the Attachments toolbar to perform the following actions on the selected attachment.
  4. Operations on the selected attachment

    Assign
    Attachment

Assign a target to the selected attachment. Click Assign Attachment on the toolbar, then do one of the following, depending on the location of the target:

    • If the target is in a CS or IS library, open the library and browse or search to locate the target (document, folder, stored search, and so on).
    • If the document is either a file on a shared disk or a web address, click Other, then select the appropriate option—UNC for a file, or URL for a web address.

For UNC, click Browse to locate the document, or type the path and filename.

For URL, type the URL beginning with http://

Optionally, you can leave the attachment blank.

    Unassign
    Attachment

Remove the assigned target from the selected attachment.

  5. As appropriate, use the tools on the toolbar to perform actions on the attachment target.
  6. Operations on the attachment target

    View

View the selected target. If your viewer application does not recognize the format of the target, the target will not display.

    Open

Open the target in an appropriate application available on your computer.

If the target is a folder, a Browse page displays the contents of the folder where you can select individual items. You can then use the tools on the toolbar to perform the appropriate operations on the selected item. Note that although the Link Workflow and Launch Workflow toolbar buttons appear to be enabled, you cannot link or launch a workflow from the target.

    Checkout Document

Check out the target from a library and save it on your local system.

Checkout and Open Check out the target and open it for editing.

    Checkin Document

Check in the previously checked out target.

    Cancel Checkout

    Cancel checkout of the target.
Version List Display the list of versions of the target, including checkin information, access to archiving features, and other options.

    Properties

Display the properties of the target.

TIP If the target for an attachment is blank, there might be no target assigned to the attachment, or the name of the target might be hidden (meaning you have Write access but not Read access).

If you have write or read/write access to the attachment, you can specify a target as indicated in the procedure.

Selecting items in a library

  • Open various folders in the library by double-clicking on the folder name—do not click the Open button.
  • To assign a document as the target, select the document, then click the Open button.
  • To assign an entire folder as a target, select the folder, then click the Open button. (If you click the Open button with no document selected, the folder that was last selected is assigned to the attachment.)
