Classifying Documents

FileNet P8 Platform can assign an incoming document to a document class and update the property values of the document class depending on the document's defined MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) type.

While the Content Engine includes an XML Classifier Plug-in, you can extend the automatic classification capabilities by developing custom classifiers that support new content types.

This step includes using an XML editor to define the document property mapping and then registering the content type in the FileNet P8 Platform Enterprise Manager. Use the XML editor and the Enterprise Manager to create and define Automatic Classification Components, using an XML property mapping script for incoming documents that are being checked into an Object Store.

Building your own classification plug-in includes developing either a COM DLL or a script-based plug-in that can do the following:

  1. Get the document from the Classification Manager on the Content Engine.
  2. Use business-specific logic to determine the type of the document. (This might include parsing the document content.)
  3. Change the class of the source document.
  4. Update values for any desired or required properties.
  5. Return status to the Classification Manager.

Custom classifiers can be written using any scripting language supported by Windows Scripting Host (like VBScript or JScript).
