Logical vs. physical table names

Certain queues, rosters, event logs, data fields, and indexes have both a logical and a physical name.

  • The logical name is the name that displays in Process user interfaces and user-defined applications (such as step processors and work performers). A system administrator or other user specifies the logical name when creating the queue, roster, event log, field, or index.
  • The physical name is the actual name the database uses to identify the table. This name is guaranteed to be unique and is system-defined. The physical name does not appear outside of vwtool.

The logical table name is more readily accessible and is for user reference only; the system software maps the logical table name to the physical table name at runtime. Having two names allows you to specify table names without worrying about collisions with table names that already exist in the database.

The following vwtool commands display the physical name:

  • config
  • logconfig
  • queueconfig
  • rosterconfig
