Prepare backup tapes

If you plan to make Content Services library or enterprise-wide backups on tape, you should prepare the tapes to use in advance. Each tape should be formatted and labeled each tape.

Tape backup requirements

  • The media name assigned to the backup set when you make library backups must match the label you assign to the backup tape.

  • The backup tape must be physically mounted on the server that contains the database and file stores you want to back up. NTBackup does not support remote backups or restores.

To prepare backup tapes

  1. Estimate the number of tapes needed.
  2. Start NTBackup: Open the Start menu, select Run..., type NTBackup in the Open field, then click OK.
  3. Insert a blank tape (or previously used tape to overwrite) in the mounted drive.
  4. From the Backup tab, select the tape drive as the Backup destination and use New Media as the Backup media.
  5. Select any file to back up, then click Start Backup.

Tip Choose a small file, such as config.sys, to save preparation time.

  6. In the field identified as If media is overwritten, use this label to identify the media, enter the media name that you will assign to the backup set when backing up a library. The name you enter in this field must match the media name, including capitalization and punctuation.

The media name can contain up to 83 characters, including any combination of spaces and special characters, except for double quotation marks ("). FileNet recommends that you use a name that helps you identify the data you plan to store on the backup tape.
  7. Click Start Backup.
  8. If you're overwriting a previously used tape, click Yes when prompted to overwrite the existing backup set.
  9. Click Close when finished.
  10. Remove the newly formatted tape from the drive.
  11. Write the media name on a label and attach it to the tape cartridge so you can easily identify it when making your backup sets.
  12. Repeat Steps 3 through 11 for all tapes you are preparing for future backups.

Once you've prepared the required tapes, you can reuse them as long as you identify the name of the tape label each time you perform the backup.
