About step properties

Use the Step tab in the Properties pane to display the properties and values of the selected step. Each step type has different properties.

  • Launch step - This is the first step in the workflow. It is created automatically on the main map.
  • General step (participant or work queue) - This type of step represents an activity that will be processed by a participant or sent to a work queue for processing by a participant or an automated process.
  • Component step - This step represents work routed to operations in external subsystems.
  • Submap step - This step represents a call to another workflow map in the workflow definition.
  • System step - This step represents a built-in function that will be performed by the system software.

For an overview of the properties for each type of step, see Summary of step properties.

Steps can be in one or more of three states:

  • Active: One or more work items associated with this step are in progress. You can modify the fields, attachments, and workflow groups for active work items. You can also complete work or terminate a work item.
  • Completed: All work items associated with this step have been completed. Historical information that can be determined from the event logs is available for completed steps.
  • Unvisited: The step has never been reached in the course of the current workflow. Only the workflow definition properties display at unvisited steps.

Multi-participant steps can have a combination of active and completed work items. Since a step can be visited more than once, a step can have one or more occurrences that are complete as well as an active occurrence. Process Tracker considers these steps to be active.

NOTE If you select more than one step on the workflow map, Process Tracker does not display any information in the Step tab.
