Backup strategies

The key to a successful backup is understanding various backup options and implementing the most appropriate one for the situation. There is no single correct backup plan for all networked systems. Before implementing a backup strategy, you should ask the following questions:

  • How often should we back up our system?
  • What kind of data and how much data do we need to back up each time?
  • What target media do we use for storing backup data?
  • What strategies should we take to prevent and deal with possible failures such as hard disk failure, bad sectors, file system errors, or user interference?
