Launch a workflow from Process Designer
When you are ready to test a workflow definition, you can launch it directly from Process Designer.
Before you launch, we suggest that you validate the workflow definition and correct any errors
(see Validate the workflow definition).
The Launch tool automates the following activities:
- Validates the workflow definition (checks for invalid expressions and routing conditions)
if you have not disabled validation in the Preferences
dialog.
- Transfers the workflow definition to the workflow
database. See for additional information.
- Launches the workflow, displaying the Launch step for the workflow author.
To make a workflow definition available for production use by others, you must
check in the workflow definition to an object store or library
that has the Workflow definition document class. If you use the Launch command to run the workflow
from Process Designer, the program will prompt you to save. If you do not want to save the workflow
definition to the object store or library
prior to launching the workflow, you can disable the automatic Add/Check in feature in the workflow
preferences. See Preferences - Workflow for additional
information.
To launch the open workflow definition
- Click Launch
on the Process Designer
toolbar, then do one of the following, depending on whether you have previously saved the workflow
to an object store or library.
- If you have never saved the workflow definition to the object store or library,
you are prompted to save the workflow definition. After you complete the save, the launch
processor specified in the workflow definition displays.
- If you have previously saved the workflow definition, but have since made changes, your
modified workflow definition is checked in and immediately checked out again for you. (Note
that the version number of the workflow definition in the title bar increments by 1.) The
launch processor specified in the workflow definition displays.
- If you have previously saved the workflow definition and have not made changes, the launch
processor specified in the workflow definition displays.
- On the Launch processor page, follow the Launch instructions to enter the appropriate information,
then click the Launch button.
