Backup types

Backup types are the methods you choose when backing up data. For example, incremental backups automatically choose files set to archive in each file's advanced attributes.

Every file on Windows file systems has an attribute set which defines settings for read-only, hidden, archive, system, indexing, and encryption. Each attribute is either enabled or disabled. Through Windows explorer, you can enable or disable each attribute by selecting or clearing the attribute's check box.

When you create a new file or update an existing file, Windows automatically enables the file’s archive attribute so a backup program knows that the file is ready for archiving. When the backup program finishes backing up the file, it may clear the archive attribute depending on the backup type.

The backup type determines whether the backup routine automatically backs up certain files based on the value set in each file's archive attribute.
