Getting started with FileNet Process applications

Use FileNet Process software to automate the flow of work for a structured business process. Examples of automated processes include:

  • Circulating documents for a systematic review and approval process
  • Processing new employee paperwork
  • Submitting travel expense reports for approvals and payment
  • Handling customer queries

Multi-step business processes such as those listed above center on the systematic routing of documents and information to appropriate participants or automated programs. An individual workflow automates the routing and processing of a particular type of document, or set of documents, for a specific business process.

Within a Process system, different users perform various activities.

Participant:
Participate in a workflow
, which includes locating and completing assigned work, and possibly tracking workflow status.

Launch a workflow, which starts the process specified in a workflow definition.

Workflow Administrator:
Manage work in progress
, which includes monitoring the status of and potentially making modifications to running workflows.
Workflow author:
Design a workflow
, which includes defining each step (activity) in a workflow, determining the order that the steps are performed, deciding who should participate at each step and what information is required to complete the step.
System Administrator:
Set up and maintain a Process system
, which includes installating, configuring, and maintaining all system components (servers, databases, and software).
  Developer:
Develop custom applications
, which involves modifying HTML and Java step processors and launch processors, configuring email notifications, and developing Java applications that interface with Process Java Applets and Connectivity (PJAC) and Process Services.

Process functionality is integrated with two client interfaces to provide appropriate document access and document version control for designing, participating in, and managing workflows.

  • FileNet Web Services Client client interface - uses ActiveX (COM) technology to provide access to FileNet Content Services and Image Services libraries.
  • FileNet Open Client client interface - uses .NET technology to provide access to FileNet Content Services and Image Services libraries.

See About client interfaces for additional information.
