Add a step

Place the appropriate type of step on the workflow map to represent each activity in the workflow. See About steps for more information about types of steps.

To add a step to the workflow map

  1. Click the desired step creation tool on the toolbar or on the Tools menu.
    • Choose Create General Step for general workflow activities that you assign to a participant or work queue. See About general steps.
    • Choose Create Submap Step to call another workflow map in the current workflow definition. See About workflow maps.
    • Choose Create System Step to specify system functions, such as a timer, in the workflow. See About system functions.
    • Choose Create Component Step to execute an operations in an external program as part of the workflow. See About component steps.
  2. Click in the map area to place the step where you want it.
  3. In the Properties pane (at the right side of the workflow map), click in the Name field and replace the default step name with a meaningful name.
  4. Enter the appropriate step properties in the Properties pane.  
   

TIP To change a step on a map from one step type to another, right-click on the step, point to Change Step Type, and choose the type you want.

TIP To create a single step of a different type

  • Right-click in the map area where you want to place the step.
  • Select the desired step type from the menu.

The new step will be placed on the map. The step creation mode will remain as it was before you created the single step.
