Backing up the system state (Windows)

To perform a complete server backup using NTBackup, you must select the volumes on a server plus its System State. You can also perform a partial backup by selecting individual folders and files. The System State data contains the following information:

  • Registry
  • Boot files, including the system files

Backing up the System State may take a while since it contains all the files needed to bring a system back to an operational state. The System State requires approximately 200 to 300 MB.

To back up the System State

  1. Start the NTBackup utility: Select Start > Run, enter ntbackup and click OK.
  2. Click the Backup tab and select System State, as shown in the following example.

  1. Select any other needed folders.
  2. Select the Backup destination from the drop-down list: either File (to backup to a file) or Tape (to back up to a mounted tape drive).
  3. Select the backup tape or file name. If you're backing up to a tape drive, select the name of an existing tape or select New Media to start a new backup tape.
  4. Click Start Backup. The Backup Job Information dialog box opens, displaying the default backup options. NTBackup assigns the date and time the backup was created to describe and label the backup.
  5. (Optional) Rename the description and backup label.

NOTE If you are backing up to a tape, you should assign it a meaningful label. When you later restore the data, you must enter the label name to restore the data.

  6. If you want to overwrite an existing backup set, select Replace the data on the media with this data.
  7. Specify whether you want to start the backup now or schedule it for another time:
    1. Click Start Backup to back up the file immediately. The Backup Progress window shows you its status. When the backup is complete, click Close.
    2. Click Schedule... if you want to schedule the backup for later. Click Yes to save your selection, and respond to the prompts for saving your backup selections. Assign the job name, then click Properties. Use the Schedule Job dialog box to specify when to run the backup job, then click OK.
