----- YEAR2000 CFORUM appended at 11:36:17 on 96/08/13 GMT (by GBCBHG00 at ELINK) Subject: Application Inventory tools Well I will start the ball rolling. I am looking for tools which will enable the building of a repository, data dictionary or inventory to describe the following about programs: 1) Program structure and flow 2) Dead code 3) called routines, copy books 4) compile/linkedit details 5) etc, etc, etc Basically I want to build the information which you provide about a program when it is managed by a source code manager. I want to rebiuld/re-invent all of the information I have by performing a re-investigation of production source/load etc. It must cover as many languages (I use the term loosely as I consider JCL, BMS maps etc to be coded in a language) and basically be able to work backwards. IE start with a CICS system, digest its CSD, search the DFHRPL and STEPLIB to locate modules, XREF with transactions/ MAPS/etc, point it at a source/copy book library, XREF source and LMOD etc. The same with batch. Start with JCL, loacte PGM, search steplib/ Joblib/lnklist, point it at a source library, XREF source and LMOD, analyse source to find copy books/called routines etc. I have heard of IBM's Rediscovery MVS. Does it do this sort of thing. Any other suggestions of tools. May I suggest 2: 1) Is Year 2000 a leap year ? YES. 2) Can IBM's LPAR facility provide a platform for year 2000 date testing and if so how? YES. IPL the LPAR and when prompted by MVS for the date time prompt reply with appropriate date for testing including GMT parameter. Setting the date with the set clock or failing to specify ,GMT at IPL time will not set the clock correctly. Consideration should also be given to HW isolating all components of this LPAR from all other LPARS and visa-versa. Corruption of time-stamps on DASD VTOC's may occur if this is not done. I have a customer who is running MVS/ESA V4.3 and planning for Year2000. The Year2000 planning guide mentions that MVS/ESA V5 is the year2000 enabled version. However, MVS/ESA V4.3 is able to display 4 digit year. Customer is asking,if this is the case then MVS/ESA 4.3 should be able to support Year2000. My understanding is that displaying 4 digits does not necessarily mean MVS can accept 4 digits input. In view of this, customer would like to know what exactly in MVS/ESA V4.3 is not year2000 enabled as they claim that being able to display 4 digits should mean year2000 enabled. Is it because some macros are not supported Appreciate if someone could help me out with this. Thanks. Ref: Append at 09:33:19 on 96/08/23 GMT (by 83432055 at EHONE) YR2000 enablement for MVS began as far back as MVS/XA 2.2. In subsequent releases more and more of the items required for YR2000 have been addressed. MVS/ESA 4.1 contained the MVS timer support to allow the 4-digit dates to be set, displayed, and obtained via MVS services. That does *not* mean that all of MVS changed at that time to properly save the century indicator that timing services now returned; there are critical pieces of MVS such as SMF, Scheduler, and Converter/Interpreter, as well as semi-required products such as RMF which do *not* properly support the century indicator, and as such do not support a 4-digit year. This support, as well as other changes within MVS, has only be provided at MVS V5 and with OS/390. It provides Year 2000 features you can use to sort, merge and transform a wide variety of dates with two-digit years according to a specified sliding or fixed century window. enhance I've written a paper called SORT2000 which contains complete details of DFSORT's new Year 2000 features, and examples of the DFSORT control statements needed to order and transform 45 different character, zoned decimal and packed decimal date fields.
