Defining a warehouse target file

These steps are part of the larger task of Importing files into a warehouse target. When you complete the steps for defining a warehouse target file, return to Importing target files into a warehouse target.

To define a Warehouse Target file:

  1. In the File name field, type a name for the file that you are defining.

The name of the file must not contain spaces. On a UNIX system, file names are case sensitive.

  2. Optional: In the Description field, type a short description of the table.

  3. Optional: In the Notes field, type notes about the contents or structure of the file.

  4. On the Parameters page, select a file type from the File type list.

  5. In the Field delimiter character field, specify a character to be used as a delimiter. This field is active only when Character is selected from the File type list.

  6. Select the First row contains column names check box if the first row of the file contains column names. The Data Warehouse Center will ignore the column names and extract data starting from the second row of the file, which contains data.

By default this check box is not selected, which means the first row does not contain column names.

  7. Click the Fields page. The Data Warehouse Center reads the file that is specified on the Warehouse Target File page, and displays the results on the Fields page. Up to 10 rows of sample data are displayed.

  8. Optional: To change a parameter value for a column, select the field in the Fields list that contains the parameter and either type or select a new value.

For example, to change the name of a column, select the name and then type your new name for the column.

  9. Optional: To add a field to the file, right-click in the white space of the Fields list and select Add, or right-click a row and select Insert.

If you select Add, a blank row is added below all other rows. If you select Insert, a blank row is inserted above the selected row.

You can specify the parameters for the new field such as Name, Data type, Length, Precision, Scale, and a Description of the data that the field will contain.

  10. Optional: To change the order of the fields in the file, select the field that you want to move in the Fields list, and click Move up to move the field up one position or Move down to move the field down one position.

  11. Optional: To remove a field from the file, right-click the field in the Fields list and select Remove.

  12. Optional: To re-import the file definition, right-click the white space of the Fields list and select Refresh.

  13. Click OK to save your changes and close the notebook.
