Building a data set name template
Use the Change Data Set Name Template window
to assist in the construction of a data set
naming convention. The template data set
name can consist of literals and symbolic
names. Templates are used to create unique
identifiers for any utilities that you want
to run. The resolved utility identifier can
be no longer than 44 characters.
These steps are part of the larger task of
running utilities with templates. When you
complete the steps for changing the data
set template, return to the main task.

To create or change a data set template:
- Select which category of variables to show
in the Variable field. Symbolic variables start with an
ampersand (&) and end in a period (.).
If you do not specify a template, the Control
Center generates default data set naming
convention from the date and timestamp.
- Use the Category and Variable fields to select and paste a variable into
the Data set name field:
- From the Category field, select a category or type of variable
to make available as a template choice. The
variable categories define a scope of choices.
You can select All to have all possible variables shown in
the Variable field.
- From the Variable field, select a symbolic variable that you
want to use as part or all of the data set
name template. You can select multiple variables
to be used as the data set name template,
up to 44 characters. The meaning of each
variable is displayed below the Category field.
- Click the Paste push button to enter the currently selected
variable into the Utility ID template field.
- Optional. Repeat steps 1- 3 for any combination
of categories and variables to construct
a unique and identifiable data set naming
convention.
- Click the OK push button.
