DB2 Connect User's Guide

Direct Database Access

DB2 Connect's basic feature is providing a direct connection to a host database from desktop applications running on Windows 32-bit systems, Linux, or OS/2 workstations. DB2 Connect Personal Edition is the simplest way to implement this solution.

Each workstation that has DB2 Connect Personal Edition installed can establish a direct TCP/IP connection to DB2 for OS/390, DB2/400 and DB2 UDB for Windows NT, Windows 2000, UNIX and OS/2 servers. In addition, applications can connect to and update multiple DB2 family databases in the same transaction with the complete data integrity provided by the 2-phase commit protocol.

DB2 Connect Personal Edition has integrated APPC support as well, to communicate with DB2 for MVS and other host and AS/400 databases that require APPC. However, the use of TCP/IP is highly recommended instead of SNA, when native TCP/IP support is available.

Figure 3 shows workstations directly connected to a host or AS/400 database server. Each workstation has DB2 Connect Personal Edition installed.

Notes:

  1. For information on what protocols are supported on which DRDA ARs and their respective host and AS/400 DRDA, refer to the appropriate DB2 Connect Quick Beginnings book.

  2. You do not need to have DB2 Universal Database installed on the DB2 Connect workstation. If you want a complete relational database management system on the DB2 Connect workstation, order DB2 Universal Database.

  3. The DB2 Application Development Client is now a part of the DB2 Connect package and can be installed if a customer wants to use it for application development. In addition, DB2 Connect now includes Stored Procedure Builder that can be used to build, test, and deploy stored procedures for DB2 for OS/390.

  4. C programmers developing Windows applications that use Microsoft ODBC, OLE DB, or ActiveX Data Objects (ADO) should use the Microsoft Open Database Connectivity Software Development Kit. Programmers who want to develop applications using the Java programming language can use any Java development environments, such as IBM's VisualAge for Java.
