Use the Backup Database SmartGuide to create a backup plan for your
database. This is an extremely important task, because the decisions
you make now affect your ability to recover your data in the event it is
lost. You will typically deal with media and storage problems, power
interruptions, and application failures. So, you will need to back up
your database, and then rebuild it should it be damaged or corrupted in some
way. (Rebuilding the database is called recovery and there is a
separate SmartGuide to help you with that part of the process.)
There are three stages to the recovery of a damaged database: crash
recovery, restore, and roll-forward. The backup plan you will create
focuses on two types of problems: media failure, and application
failure. DB2 automatically takes care of problems caused by power
interruptions. It will automatically restart and return your database
to its state at the time of the last complete transaction. Media and
application failures however, are more severe.
The first pages of this SmartGuide will help you categorize your database
and your business needs. The Summary page displays recommendations for
database settings and a backup schedule based on how you answered those
questions. Use the last page to specify where to create the backup
image. Click on Done to change your database settings and
schedule a regular backup.
