************************************* *** IBM Data Replication Solution *** ************************************* Part of the Information Warehouse Family EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Businesses today that are moving to client/server environments are challenged with delivering key legacy data from mission-critical operational systems to users across the enterprise. The IBM Data Replication Solution is designed to efficiently deliver the right data in the right format into the right hands at the right time. By supporting sources and targets that include the DB2 family (MVS, VM, VSE, OS/400, OS/2, AIX), IMS, VSAM, and others, the products in our solution ensure that you have timely, reliable, and consistent data across your enterprise. In addition, with the data enhancement capabilities built into these products you can easily customize data for specific applications and decision-making activities. And as part of IBM's Information Warehouse family, the IBM Data Replication Solution can play an integral role in the growth of your enterprise. The products in this solution -- DataPropagator Relational, DataPropagator NonRelational, DataRefresher and DataHub -- are designed to work together and grow with your business. MEETING THE CHALLENGES OF A GROWING BUSINESS The IBM Data Replication Solution is designed to meet the growing demands for data across the enterprise. Requirements for replication range from sharing host data with downsized client/server applications to building information warehouses that increase a company's competitive advantage. The suite of products in this solution can address the operational, informational, and administrative requirements of data replication. These products support a range of operating environments from mainframes to LANs to workstations, allowing legacy data systems to work seamlessly with relational database management systems. The IBM Data Replication Solution enables you to bring legacy data from IMS Database Manager (IMS DB) databases, VSAM datasets, and flat files to the DB2 family of databases, and supports replication among IBM DB2 for MVS, IBM DB2 for OS/400, IBM DB2 for AIX, and IBM DB2 for OS/2 databases. While any given application may have a unique set of requirements, replication needs can be categorized into two generals areas: 1) those supporting operational applications (for example, downsized applications) 2) those supporting informational applications (for example, executive information systems ). IBM's Data Replication Solution supports your operational applications by o Replicating key business data from production systems into client/server environments, o Replicating only the data required, subsetting as appropriate, o Restructuring the data as required for new applications, o Allowing you to control the currency between source and target data to meet your application needs from near real-time replication to point-in-time copies ("snapshots"). Our solution supports your informational applications by o Replicating key business data from production systems into informational databases, o Improving data availability and access performance by moving data to the server most convenient for the user, o Tailoring the data to improve its usefulness, o Supporting both point-in-time copies as well as data histories for trend analysis. REPLICATING MADE EFFICIENT Because the source data for replication is likely to be your production system, minimizing the impact to production applications and transaction performance is of critical importance. Our replication design requires no changes to production applications and minimizes any impact to transaction performance by capturing changes from the log instead of competing with transactions for access to production tables. Our performance tests show that the change capture program adds less than one percent overhead to the CPU in production environments. With this design, extract programs currently running in your batch window may be replaced with IBM's Data Replication Solution to increase online system availability. And our design supports data reduction at the source site, so only the data necessary flows over the network. For example, hot spot activity on the source system can be eliminated at the target by copying only the last change to occur to a given data item rather than every change that occurred. MAKING DATA MEANINGFUL The IBM Data Replication Solution's enhancement capabilities enable you to transform your data into its most usable and meaningful format. Our solution enables you to provide summarized data such as averages, sums, minimum and maximum values in a set, and more. For example, you can select a subset of IMS DB source data and move it to a DB2 AIX target, only copying information on customers whose account balance exceeds a particular amount. You can derive data from a DB2 MVS inventory application to create a DB2 OS/400 table containing the daily reduction in specific inventory items. You can maintain data histories, copying the weekly regional sales totals maintained on a source DB2 MVS database to DB2 OS/2 servers in each regional sales office to analyze business trends. And you use SQL, leveraging skills already in your enterprise, to transform the data into meaningful information for each application, workgroup or individual end user. SIMPLIFYING ADMINISTRATION You can administer the IBM Data Replication Solution from a single point-of-control, on a workstation that is either local to, or remote from, the source and target systems. A DataHub workstation provides the administrative control point for an integrated data replication solution spanning central and distributed environments. Graphic user interfaces (GUIs) tailored to users' skills and tasks make it easy to specify source to target mappings and enhancements to both relational and non-relational data. And initialization tasks that used to require a DBA -- like creating and loading copies -- are now automated. BUILDING ON PROVEN TECHNOLOGY IBM's Data Replication Solution represents the third generation in the product suite's architecture and design. The first generation prototype, designed over five years ago, was evaluated and successfully validated by IBM customers. Their participation contributed to a robust solution, placing our solution in a unique performance class. The architecture of the IBM Data Replication Solution is based on individual components that interoperate to give you the flexibility to customize your data replication environment. And our data staging design promotes interoperability among other products and platforms. With this design, IBM tools, independent software vendors, and customer-written tools complement each other and expand the solution, so that it grows with your business. The IBM Data Replication Solution is delivered by: o IBM DataPropagator Relational Version 1 o IBM DataPropagator NonRelational Version 2 o IBM DataRefresher Version 1 o IBM DataHub Version 1 Used individually or together, these products provide flexible and efficient data replication that can maximize the accessibility of reliable data for a single user, a department, a workgroup, and an entire enterprise.
