This readme file provides information necessary to install and use the VisualAge COBOL Version 3.0.3 fixpak, which upgrades Version 3.0.2 to Version 3.0.3.

This fixpak also includes PTF IP22257 for the Foreign File System server. See IP22257.HTM for information on applying the PTF.

You must have VisualAge COBOL Version 3.0.2 installed before you apply this fixpak. Detailed install instructions for Version 3.0.2 are included in INSTWIN.HTM and INST390.HTM on the Version 3.0.2 CD-ROM. For problem solving and known limitations, see the README for Version 3.0.2.

Important changes for Version 3.0.3

When using Remote Edit-Compile-Debug, the following table summarizes the additional or changed requirements for Version 3.0.3.


Prerequisite product or component	Requirement or change
IBM COBOL for OS/390 & VM Version 2 Release 2	The PTF for APAR PQ21350
Foreign File System	PTF IP22257 (which supersedes PTF IP22114 and PTF IP22230). With Version 3.0.2 and before, FFS required the environment variable FFSPATH be added to the .envvars file of the HTTP server. With Version 3.0.3, this requirement is lifted.

Install instructions for Version 3.0.3

To install this fixpak, do the following steps:

Unzip the fixpak into a folder on your workstation.
Select Start -> Run, and type x:\fixpak\setup.exe, where x:\fixpak is the location of the unzipped fixpak. The IBM VisualAge COBOL Setup window opens.
Select Repair and click Next.
Follow the prompts to complete the installation. Your original installation directory is retained.
Shut down and restart your computer.
If you had any shortcuts, associations, or links to a previous installation of IBM VisualAge COBOL on your workstation, you should verify them now.

This procedure is the same for basic and network installations. For example, if Version 3.0.2 was installed as a network installation on a network server, following this procedure will automatically install Version 3.0.3 as a network installation. Shared install clients do not need to make any updates.

Enhancements in Version 3.0.3

VisualAge COBOL Version 3.0.3 includes the following enhancements:

Foreign File System (FFS) - FFS performance has been improved for systems with a large number of datasets and members.
IBM Distributed Debugger - Using the "examine exception and resume" function, the debugger can continue program execution and debugging after detecting (and optionally allowing you to correct) severe or critical errors. For additional details, see DEBUG.HTM.
Job Monitor - The reliability of the Job Monitor Server has been improved.
