SOURCE: BLD FLASH 9704 SOURCE MATERIAL DATED: 5/97 IBM PSM 32-BIT CLIENT FOR WINDOWS/95 AND WINDOWS/NT Printing Systems Manager for AIX* now has a 32-bit client available for use on the Windows/95** and Windows/NT** platforms. The client is currently available as a services offering, priced separately from the product. In addition, the client is only available for the most recent release of PSM. The products affected are: 5765-273 IBM Printing Systems Manager for AIX, version 1.2.1 5765-541 IBM PSM Graphical User Interface for AIX, version 1.2.1 There are major differences between the previously available 16-bit client (provided with the product), and the 32-bit client now provided as a services offering: o SUPPORTED PLATFORMS AND DRIVERS The 32-bit client is supported on Windows/NT versions 3.51 and 4.0, and on Windows/95. Additionally, the printer drivers supported on these platforms are as follows: PSM Client -------- Types of Drivers Supported -------- for Windows Windows 3.1x Windows/95 Windows/NT --------------------------------------------------------------- 16-bit client | 16-bit | 16-bit | not supported 32-bit client | not supported | 16 & 32-bit | 32-bit --------------------------------------------------------------- o ARCHITECTURAL STANDARDS The port monitor for the PSM client daemon is fully integrated into the Windows printing architecture. o EXPANDED FUNCTIONS The new client extends the number of physical printer destinations that may be defined for a given printer driver. (Previously, there was a 1-to-1 correlation; now there is a 1-to-many correlation.) There is also additional user function: - "Finds" logical printers available on the network. As long as the user has specified no default PSM server, the client will query all available PSM servers on the local area network. - Provides the ability to specify any PSM attribute on the user's print request. Additionally, a user may set up default attributes for his/her workstation's default printer. (These attributes are stored in a Window's '.INI' file.) - The owner of the print job may cancel a job submitted from their Windows client. - Provides a job query notebook, and the user may configure the client to show only his/her own jobs versus all jobs queued for a particular printer. - User's have the option of receiving notifications from the PSM servers via a pop-up window instead of via e-mail. - Animated dialogs are now available for searching for printers, and for sending and searching for print jobs. o INSTALLATION NOTES Installation is a simple one-step/one-question process. The client code requires less than two megabytes (2MB) of hard disk space.
