SYSGEN HINTS/TIPS. 8. 94/06/08 New news updating information in WSC FLASH 9349: BOOTP REQUIREMENT FOR THE I-DATA 7913 IPDS PRINTER LAN ATTACHMENT AIX 3.2.5 APAR IX37764 PTF U422283 enables BOOTP replies across token-ring bridges. Before the above fix, PSF/6000 1.2 customers using the idata 7913 to drive coax or twinax printers were restricted if using an AIX bootp server. The restriction limited the placement of the bootp server to a machine that was on the same LAN segment as the 7913. See WSC FLASH 9349 (HONE document ID G023343) for a complete description of this requirement. If the 7913's bootp server is on an OS/2 machine, the two devices do not need to be on the same LAN segment. With this AIX 3.2.5 PTF, the AIX bootp server can now be on another LAN segment that is connected to the one that contains the idata 7913. 7. 94/04/29 PSF/6000 Corrective Service Install Problem When installing PSF/6000 1.2 corrective service ptfs thru SMIT on AIX 3.2.5, there are five options on the INSTALL / UPDATE SELECTABLE SOFTWARE (Custom Install). They are: Install Software Products at latest Available Level Install Maintenance Levels Install Enhancements Install Subsystems (Selective Fixes) Install From All Available Software Packages Selecting the first three options doesn't allow corrective service to be applied. The bottom two options will allow corrective service to be applied. Until further notice, use the bottom two options. 6. 94/03/17 IBM AIX Print Services Facility (PSF) Version 1.2 SYMPTOM: Risc System/6000 system hang CIRCUMSTANCE: * Hang occurs after the superuser (root) attempts to load the PSF/6000 channel device driver using SMIT running under XWindows: SMIT (Running under XWindows) Devices PSF/6000 Printer Definition Load Driver onto S/370 Channel Emulator/A Adapter (The 'load driver successful message may or may not be displayed) HOW TO AVOID: * This problem can be avoided if the same operation is is attempted from ASCII SMIT running from an hft terminal instead of from SMIT running under XWindows. Lab tests have shown that the XWindows server must not have been previously active or the operation may fail even if running the ASCII version of SMIT from an hft. The safest way to perform this operation is to perform it immediately following a system reboot. * APAR IX43191 PTF U429962 also can be applied before the operation is attempted and will prevent this symptom from occurring. HOW TO RECOVER IF THIS PROBLEM OCCURS: * Reboot the Risc System/6000 machine. * Follow the tips in the "How to Avoid" section of this notice. 5. 94/03/17 IBM AIX Print Services Facility (PSF) Version 1.2 SYMPTOM: Risc System/6000 system crash (Flashing 888) CIRCUMSTANCES: * A Channel attached printer (using the S/370 Channel Emulator/A Adaptor Card) has been driven by PSF/6000 on this Risc System/6000. This means that the device driver was installed with SMIT: SMIT Devices PSF/6000 Printer Definition Load Driver onto S/370 Channel Emulator/A Adapter It also means that a printer was subsequently defined and that some printing was accomplished. ... AND ... * The PSF/6000 psf.base install option is being - removed (de-installed), or - reinstalled, or - installed over an existing PSF/6000 version/release ... AND ... * PSF processes were not stopped before the installion was started. HOW TO AVOID: * This problem can be avoided if the PSF/6000 processes are stopped before the product removal, reinstall, or overwrite is initiated. To avoid this problem, please review and follow the procedures outlined in the "Reinstalling PSF/6000" chapter in the applicable PSF/6000 Print Administration publication: - IBM AIX Print Service Facility/6000 Print Administration Version 1.2 S544-3817-02 Pages 99-106 - This publication is also viewable online using the psfinfo command. * You can also avoid this problem by applying corrective service to PSF/6000 1.2 ( a ptf). See the section entitled: "HOW TO PROVIDE EXTRA PROTECTION FROM THIS PROBLEM" which follows. HOW TO RECOVER IF THIS PROBLEM OCCURS: * Reboot the Risc System/6000 machine. * Check the status of the PSF/6000 product. If the removal, re-install, or overwrite did not complete successfully, retry it now. After reboot, there will be no psf processes running so the problem should not occur again. * For extra safety, you can follow the section in this no notice titled: "How To Provide Extra Protection From This Problem". HOW TO PROVIDE EXTRA PROTECTION FROM THIS PROBLEM: * Before removing, re-installing, or overwritting PSF/6000 1.2, apply PTF U429962 ( for APAR IX43191). 4. 94/02/23 PSF/6000 1.2 will ship four different PTF streams. Each stream is independent of the other. And, the latest PTF in each stream supersedes any previous PTFs in that particular stream. Here are the four streams, or families, of PTFs: 1. PSF/6000 1.2 (psf.info and psf.man install options only) 2. ACIF/6000 PTFs (psf.acif) 3. PPFA/6000 PTFs (psf.ppfa and psf.ppfa.src install options) 4. PSF/6000 1.2 (all other psf.* install options not listed above) This includes idata 7913 microcode refreshes (in psf.utils). To get the "latest fixes" for all of PSF/6000 1.2, up to four PTFs need to be installed. They can all be shipped on 1 tape and installed in one operation but they must each be ordered. Note that a PTF for a particular install option (psf.acif, for example) specifically requires that psf.acif be installed before the PTF can be applied. PSF/6000 1.2 will release RS/6000 PTFs under these compid/relno sets: Compid Relno FESN APAR prefix PTF prefix ACIF/6000 564806201 Rel 116 0966519 PN UN - psf.acif PPFA/6000 568819001 Rel 108 0960887 PN UN - psf.ppfa and psf.ppfa.src PSF/6000 576514000 Rel 120 0965709 IX U4 - psf.man and psf.info - psf.* (not psf.man, psf.info, psf.acif, psf.ppfa or psf.ppfa.src) Note 1: Compid 576514000 is for PSF/6000. A new relno was added for 1.2.0. There will be two types of PTFs for this compid: - PTFs which hit the psf.man and psf.info install options - PTFs which hit any of the other install options EXCLUDING psf.ppfa, psf.ppfa.src, and psf.acif (see below) Relno 11 was used for 1.1.0 Note 2: Compid 564806201 is already in use for ACIF/MVS and ACIF/VM. Relno 116 was added for ACIF/6000 (psf.acif) Note 3: Compid 568819001 is already in use for PPFA/370 (MVS/VM/VSE). Relno 108 was added for PPFA/6000 (psf.ppfa and psf.ppfa.src) 3. 94/02/17 ITEM DELETED 94/06/08 2. 94/01/26 Installation: ------------- 1) Token-Ring 7913 "ring speed" set incorrectly symptom: The customer attaches the 7913 to a LAN and power on the unit. The unit's LAN light comes on briefl and goes off. problem: The customer has a 16 Mbits/sec Token-Ring and set the 7913 for 4 Mbits/sec. Or the Token-Ring runs at 4 Mbits/sec and the 7913 is set for 16 Mbits/sec 2) BOOTP server not started symptom: The customer attaches the 7913 to a LAN and powers on the unit. The unit's LAN light continues to blink indefinitely. problem: The customer has not started the BOOTP daemon on a AIX system or OS/2 system. 3) 7913 and BOOTP daemon separated by a LAN bridge or IP router symptom: The customer attaches the 7913 to a LAN and powers on the unit. The unit's LAN light continues to blin indefinitely. problem: The 7913 and the system running the BOOTP daemon are separated by one or more LAN bridge or IP router The 7913 and an OS/2 BOOTP daemon can be separated by one or more LAN bridges. In this case the "-b" option must be specified when the BOOTP daemon is started. In some cases, the 7913 and an OS/2 BOOTP daemon can also be separated by an IP router. The IP router must be specially configured to pass certain broadcast frames. It may also be possible to run the BOOTP daemon on a system other than AIX or OS/2. 4) Incorrect "hardware type (ht)" in bootptab entry symptom: Customer has made a bootptab entry for a 7913 unit. The customer attaches the 7913 to the LAN and powers on the unit. The unit's LAN light continues to blink indefinitely. problem: The bootptab entry for the 7913 indicates "ht=6: or "ht=tr:" but the 7913 is an ethernet unit. Or the bootptab entry for the 7913 indicates "ht=ether:" or "ht=ethernet:" but the 7913 is a Token-Ring unit. 5) Coax/Twinax switch set incorrectly symptom: The 7913's LAN light and POWER light are solid. The customer pushes the TEST page to print the 7913's configuration information. A printer is powered on, cabled to the 7913, and ready. problem: The printer is a coax printer but the switch indicates twinax. Or the printer is a twinax printer but the switch indicates coax. 6) Twinax station address incorrect symptom: The customer has cabled a twinax printer to the 7913. The 7913's switches indicate twinax. The printer immediately displays an error when powered on. problem: The printer's "station address" is not configured to 0. The 7913 requires that the station address be 0. 7) TCP/IP for OS/2 not installed symptom: Customer attempts to add a new PSF/2 profile. TCP/IP is not one of the options for "Attachment Type". problem: TCP/IP is not installed or was installed improper ------------------------------------------------- Operation: ---------- 1) Duplicate IP address for PSF system symptom: The 7913's LAN light and POWER light are solid. PSF device has been created. But PSF can not communicate with the 7913. The customer pings the 7913 but gets no response. problem: The IP address of the AIX or OS/2 system is not unique. Another system in the network has the same address. 2) Duplicate IP address for 7913 symptom: The 7913's LAN light and POWER light are solid. A PSF device has been created. But PSF can not communicate with the 7913. The customer pings the 7913 and gets a response. problem: The IP address of the 7913 is not unique. Another system in the network has the same address. 3) Printer not powered on and ready at startup symptom: The 7913's LAN light and POWER light are solid. A PSF device has been created. But PSF can not communicate with the 7913. The customer pings the 7913 and gets a response. problem: The printer attached to the 7913 is not powered on. The 7913 does not accept incoming connection requests if it can not communicate with the printer. It also does not accept incoming connection requests if the printer requires intervention. ---------------------------------------------------------- Microcode Download: ------------------- 1) File specifier slashes wrong in OS/2 bootfile symptom: A customer using an OS/2 BOOTP daemon has added a bootfile specification to the bootptab entry for for a 7913 unit. However, the 7913 continues to use the microcode in its EPROM. The LOAD light does not flash during power on. problem: The bootfile specification uses slashes in the "OS/2" direction. It must use slashes in the "Unix" direction". For example, "\tcpip\etc\ida7913.cfg" is INCORRECT. It must be "/tcpip/etc/ida7913.cfg". 2) AIX bootfile not readable by "nobody" symptom: A customer using an AIX BOOTP daemon has added a bootfile specification to the bootptab entry for a 7913 unit. However, the 7913 continues to use the microcode in its EPROM. The LOAD light does not flash during power on. problem: The file permissions of the named bootfile do not allow read access to "other". 3) AIX microcode file not readable by "nobody" symptom: A customer using an AIX BOOTP daemon has added a bootfile specification to the bootptab entry for for a 7913 unit. However, the 7913 continues to use the microcode in its EPROM. The LOAD light flashes momentarily during power on. problem: The microcode file listed in the bootfile does not exist or has file permissions that do not allow read access to "other". 4) TFTP daemon not started on system running BOOTP daemon symptom: A customer using an AIX BOOTP daemon has added a bootfile specification to the bootptab entry for for a 7913 unit. When the customer attempts to power on the 7913 its LOAD light flashes indefinitely. problem: The TFTP daemon have not been started on the system that also runs the BOOTP daemon. 1. 93/12/23 Item deleted 94/03/17 ************************************************************************ * SECTION 4.
