USAGE NOTES ON SELECTED FEATURES: ### ###::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::### ### ### ### FTP JOB LOG UPLOAD ### ### ------------------ ### ### To use FTP to upload the printer job log, FTP to the printer's ### ### IP address. As you log in, note that the printer does not check ### ### user name or password. If your FTP application requires a user ### ### name and password, type in anything, or just press ENTER. ### ### ### ### The FTP commands "cd", "pwd", "ls", and "put" are all NOT ### ### supported. You can only use "get" to obtain the job log, ### ### "delete" to remove the job log, and "quit" to log off the ### ### printer's FTP server. ### ### ### ### For the "get" command, you will need to supply the local file ### ### name you want given for the job log. For example, if you type ### ### "get log", on the client, the file "log" will contain the job ### ### log data in ascii format. ### ### ### ### To use the "delete" command, just type the command. If your ### ### FTP session requires that the delete command have a file name, ### ### type in any file name, and the job log will be deleted. ### ### Due to memory limitations, only 1 FTP connection is supported ### ### on a 16M system, and 3 FTP connections on 32M or more. ### ### ### ### ### ### PROTECTION FROM HARD DRIVE CORRUPTION ### ### ------------------------------------- ### ### After installing Release 2.1, if you try to update software with### ### an incomplete code load, the incomplete update file will be ### ### erased from the hard drive, and the currently loaded code ### ### release will be used. ### ### ### ### If you find that after copying an update file to a printer that ### ### is at Release 2.1, you do not see the "UPDATE SOFTWARE - YES" ### ### message during the 1st power on sequence after sending the ### ### update, the cause is an incomplete or corrupted copy of the ### ### load. ### ### ### ### No further action is required in this case, and you can try the ### ### update again if desired. ### ### ### ### ### ### LIMITATIONS IN COLOR RENDERING DICTIONARY (CRD) SELECTION ### ### --------------------------------------------------------- ### ### Some applications describe the colors you pick in terms of how ### ### much Red, Green, and Blue (RGB) should be used to make the ### ### color. Other applications describe the colors in terms of how ### ### much Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black (CMYK) should be used to ### ### make the color. ### ### ### ### The IBM Network Color Printer uses Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and ### ### Black toners to make colors. ### ### ### ### When an application describes colors to the printer as RGB, the ### ### printer controller must translate that color into CMYK. ### ### ### ### The RENDERING STYLE option is offered to give you a choice of ### ### how to balance the colors for the kind of output you need when ### ### the RGB to CMYK translation takes place. ### ### ### ### When an application sends colors to the printer in terms of CMYK### ### the printer controller does not need to translate that color, ### ### and the Rendering style selection does not change your color ### ### balance. ### ### ### ### For example, selecting the ECONOMY CRD as the rendering style ### ### when your application sends color as CMYK will cause the Economy### ### CRD to have no effect on the amount of toner used. ### ### ### ### When the Rendering style selection seems to have no effect on ### ### color balance of your output, you will need to use your ### ### application settings to change color balance. ### ### ### ### Consult your application documentation to determine how colors ### ### are sent to the printer. ### ### ### ### OTHER SPECIAL NOTES ### ### ------------------- ### ### - DEMONSTRATION PAGES: Release 2.1 base code on the web does not### ### include the Release 2.1 Demonstration pages. The Demonstration### ### Pages have been replaced by text pages exlpaining how to get ### ### and install the demonstration pages. ### ### ### ### The Demonstration Pages add than 20MB to the Release 2.1 base ### ### code load, and they were separated from the base package to ### ### reduce the amount of data transferred during download of the ### ### base code from the web. A separate update file is available ### ### from the web so you can add the demonstration pages if you ### ### desire. ### ### ### ### If after you have upgraded to the Release 2.1 base code, you ### ### want to add support for the demonstration pages: ### ### 1. Down load the self-extracting zip'd file (DEMOS21.EXE) ### ### containing the Demonstration Pages update. ### ### 2. Unpack DEMOS21.EXE by typing 'DEMOS21' at a DOS or OS2 ### ### command prompt. The file will unpack into a file called ### ### DEMOUPDT.210. ### ### 3. Install the Release 2.1 Demonstration Page update file ### ### (DEMOUPDT.210) using the steps given below for ### ### installing a microcode update. ### ### ### ### The demonstration pages are available from the IBM web page. ### ### To get to the update, go to www.ibm.com. Select 'PRODUCTS', ### ### then 'PRINTING SYSTEMS', then 'PRINTER DRIVERS/PRODUCT ### ### UPDATES'. ### ### ### ## ## ##::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::## ## V. The command and setup to send the update file to the printer ## ## will vary by the operating system. Use the following cross- ## ## reference to determine the appropriate update process and ## ## commands: ## ## ## ## DOS : a. Type "COPY [d:][path]IBMNCP22.PS LPT1 /b", ## ## where [d:] is the drive on which the update ## ## file exists, and [path] is the directory. ## ## ## ## For example, if your drive G and you loaded ## ## the update file into the TEMP directory, ## ## type "COPY G:\TEMP\IBMNCP22.PS LPT1 /b". ## ## (don't type the quotes) ## ## ## ## The "/b" means use binary mode. ## ## ## ## WIN 3.1/NT : a. Open a DOS window ## ## ## ## : b. ## ## ## ## WIN 95 : a. Shut down Win 95 and select restart in ## ## MS-DOS mode. ## ## ## ## : b. ## ## ## ## OS/2 : a. Open an OS/2 window ## ## ## ## b. Switch to the drive and directory in which ## ## which the update file resides. ## ## ## ## c. Type "PRINT /D:LPT1 /b IBMNCP22.PS " ## ## (don't type the quotes) ## ## ## ## 2. Wait for the copy operation to complete (DOS prompt returns). ## ## Total copy time will depend on the combination of hardware and ## ## operating system. Expect from 8 to 30 minutes duration. ## ## ## ## 3. AT THE PRINTER; Watch for the busy light on the printer to ## ## begin flashing, and then for it to stop flashing. The file ## ## copy is complete after the busy light STOPS flashing. ## ## +-------------------------------+ ## ## | SPECIAL NOTE: | ## ## | ------------- | ## ## | Be sure to wait until the | ## ## | busy light stops flashing | ## ## | before proceeding. If the | ## ## | busy light does not stop | ## ## | flashing, see your printer | ## ## | administrator or consult the | ## ## | printer administrator's guide| ## ## | Appendix B, page B-3, steps 2| ## ## | and 3 for recovery action | ## ## +-------------------------------+ ## ## ## ## 4. The more recent copy file ## ## will simply write over the file unsuccessfully copied. ## ## ## ## => IT IS IMPORTANT TO VISUALLY VERIFY THAT THE PRINTER BUSY LIGHT ## ## BEGINS AND FINISHES FLASHING. POWERING OFF THE PRINTER BEFORE ## ## COMPLETION OF THIS STEP MAY CORRUPT THE PRINTER'S HARD DRIVE, ## ## WHICH CAN ONLY BE FIXED BY REPLACING THE DRIVE. ## ## ## ##....................................................................## ## ## ## +------------------------------------------------------------+ ## ## | COPYING THE UPDATE FILE TO THE PRINTER OVER THE NETWORK | ## ## +------------------------------------------------------------+ ## ## NOTE: Network update requires LPR support at the workstation. ## ## ## ## Network update from Windows 3.1 or Win 95 is not possible ## ## unless an LPR utility has been installed. Those windows ## ## Operating system do not include an LPR Client. ## ## ## ## When using the LPR command to copy the update file to the ## ## printer, check to see whether you have a parameter that ## ## that allows file transfer in binary mode. The file transfer ## ## will take less time if you can execute the LPR in binary ## ## mode. ## ## ## ## Consult your operating system documentation to make sure you ## ## know the correct format to use for the LPR command. You can ## ## usually get on-line help text giving the correct LPR command ## ## format by opening a DOS or OS2 window and typing "LPR". ## ## ## ## 1. Open an OS/2 or DOS window ## ## ## ## 2. Switch to the drive and directory in which the update file ## ## resides. ## ## ## ## 3. Type "LPR IBMNCP22.PS -Sxxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -Pqueuename" ## ## Where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the printer IP address. Use the ## ## following guide to determine the value of "queuename": ## ## ## ## - If your current code level is 1.03 and you have 16M of ## ## memory installed, use "ibmcolor_direct". ## ## - If your current code level is 1.03 and you have 32M or ## ## more of memory installed, use "ibmcolor_print" ## ## - If your current code level is 1.1, 2.0, or 2.1 and you ## ## have 16M of memory installed, use "ibmncp_direct". ## ## - If your current code level is 1.1, 2.0 or 2.1, and you ## ## have 32M or more of memory installed, use "ibmncp_print".## ## ## ## For example, if you have a 16M configured printer with an IP ## ## address of 9.99.43.5, and your printer controller is at ## ## Release 1.03, you would type: ## ## "LPR IBMNCP22.PS -S9.99.43.5 -Pibmcolor_direct" ## ## ## ## 2. Wait for the copy operation to complete (DOS prompt returns). ## ## Total copy time will depend on the combination of hardware and ## ## operating system.
