Drawing pictures with .TR

Question

When I use the .TR to remap characters to symbols for drawing pictures I can't make it print on more than one device correctly. What coding can I use to ensure portability?

Answer

  Use the .BX, .VR, and .HR control words to draw pictures, or a table if
  appropriate. Using .TR is risky as it depends on what font and codepage you
  are in, which will change with the logical device.
