Why can't I use pg num symbol outisde RF/RF?

Question

Why doesn't the page number symbol (&) resolve correctly within the text of my document?

Answer

  Within a document, the ampersand character is the page symbol indicator.
  The page number symbol is replaced with the current page number whenever
  the symbol appears in RH/RF.

     .rh on
     .se pageno = &
     .rh off
      . . .
     In the body my page number is &pageno
