Prerequisites

The following prerequisites are required to be installed before installing this update.

CICS Explorer1.0.0.7 or later

The CICS Explorer needs to be at this version before this Performance Analyzer plug-in update can be installed.

For existing CICS Explorer downloads make sure the version is at least 1.0.0.7 by clicking Help -> About IBM CICS Explorer. It should state the version to be 1.0.0.7 or higher, if not your CICS Explorer installation will need to be updated.

The CICS Explorer by default includes a link to its update-site (http://download.boulder.ibm.com/ibmdl/pub/software/htp/cics/updates/explorer/). If it's there you can just update it by selecting Help -> Software Updates... and on the "Installed Software" tab, click on "Update...". It should then find an Update for the CICS Explorer. If so, install it, restart when prompted and then install this CICS Performance Analyzer plug-in as normal.

If there was not an update for the CICS Explorer and your version is less than 1.0.0.7 make sure the default update-site is present in the CICS Explorer. You can do this by selecting Help -> Software Updates... from the main menu. Click the "Available Software" tab and click the "Manage Sites..." and the update-site should normally be there, if not, add it manually by clicking "Add Site...". Once that's done retry updating the CICS Explorer and the update should be found.

Co-requisites

None.

Installation Instructions

To install the CICS Performance Analyzer plug-in, there are two options:

  1. Add the IBM-hosted CICS Performance Analyzer plug-in update-site to the CICS Explorer and install it from there: http://download.boulder.ibm.com/ibmdl/pub/software/htp/cics/updates/pa/.
  2. Or alternatively download a zipped version of the update-site and install it locally; (known as an archive update-site).

An advantage of using the IBM-hosted update-site is that it is kept up-to-date with the latest version. Users can search for any available updates to the CICS Performance Analyzer plug-in periodically within the CICS Explorer. They can choose if and when to install them at their convenience. Alternatively the user can choose to get the CICS Explorer to automatically search for updates and inform the user when they become available.

Otherwise updates can be downloaded on demand from Fix Central, but users will need to check the Fix Central website for any further updates available, and download them as appropriate. Fix Central: http://www.ibm.com/support/fixcentral/

Installation via the Update-Site

To update the CICS Performance Analyzer plug-in using the IBM-hosted update-site follow the instructions below:

  1. Launch the CICS Explorer
  2. Click Help on the CICS Explorer menu bar and click Software Updates in the drop-down menu. The Software Updates and Add-ons window is displayed.
  3. Click the Available Software tab.
  4. The first time an update or install of the CICS Performance Analyzer plug-in is done the update-site needs to be added to the CICS Explorer. On subsequent updates the following step can be skipped.
  5. On an initial install of the CICS Performance Analyzer plug-in only: Select the check-box alongside the tool name, and click Install...
  6. Alternatively to update an existing CICS Performance Analyzer plug-in installation select the Installed Software tab, and then click Update...
  7. If an update is available for the CICS Performance Analyzer plug-in, an Update dialog box will appear (for a new install an Install dialog will appear). Confirm the installation by clicking Finish.
  8. The CICS Performance Analyzer plug-in is then installed/updated, and you'll be asked to restart to apply the changes. Click Yes to restart the CICS Explorer with the CICS Performance Analyzer plug-in now installed and up-to-date.

Known Issues of this update

None.

Known Limitations of this update

Please read the known limitations with this update below to understand what is covered by this update.

CICS PA plug-in memory limitations

Using csv files might cause OutOfMemory Exceptions when an inadequate Java™ heap size has been allocated. There is no hard rule to what needs to be allocated and many users might find that the default maximum heap size is perfectly sufficient. However it might be necessary in some circumstances to increase the value, following the examples below:

In a Windows® or Linux® command line, change the directory to the one where the cicsexplorer.exe (cicsexplorer on Linux) file is located. Start the CICS Explorer by typing the following command: cicsexplorer -vmargs -Xmx512m Alternatively, you can modify the cicsexplorer.ini file in the CICS _Explorer subdirectory to add the following information: -vmargs -Xms128m -Xmx512m then start the CICS Explorer as normal.
