IBM Credit Corporation has introduced a streamlined pricing structure that significantly lowers the financing rate for IBM and other-than-IBM software and services. According to John E. Callies, IBM Credit general manager, end-user customer financing, the new structure will facilitate customers'* acquisitions of the software and services portion of their total information technology solution. "IBM Credit understands that a customer's I/T solution isn't limited to hardware products," said Callies. "By providing attractive rates for IBM and other-than IBM software and services, we are enabling customers to efficiently and economically complete their total solution according to the needs of their business. While some financial services providers have shied-away from this type of financing, IBM Credit continues to respond to the needs of our customers with an array of flexible and attractive offerings." This pricing structure is based on the prime rate and will fluctuate accordingly. Best-credit customers will obtain software and services financing rates** that are as low as prime for financing terms of 36 months or less. Customers can finance transactions up to a maximum of $250,000 of software and I/T services without any hardware content*** and larger amounts of software and services financing, in conjunction with hardware financing. IBM AS/400**** and IBM RS/6000**** applicable software and services financed under IBM Credit's Preferred Rate Financing (5.9 percent financing) and Total Solution Financing (3.9 percent financing) will continue to be eligible for lower rates. IBM today announced that Directory and Security Server (DSS) for OS/2* Warp, one of the IBM Software Servers, is currently in final gamma testing and will be available in July. DSS, based on open, scalable industry-standard technology, provides businesses with a global directory and security solution to allow more users to easily and securely access distributed network resources on an OS/2 Warp Server Version 4 network, and eases the network management burden for system administrators. "Customers today need completely secure, multiplatform enterprise networks. The new Directory and Security Server for OS/2 Warp enables customers to build open and integrated distributed networks to meet this requirement," said Art Olbert, vice president of server products, IBM Personal Software Products division. "In addition, DSS seamlessly expands the features of OS/2 Warp Server to provide the ideal total enterprise network solution for customers of all sizes." DSS Takes Ease-of-Use to New Levels DSS broadens the scope of OS/2 Warp Server and OS/2 LAN Server 4.0 by allowing easy, seamless access by thousands of users to system resources such as applications, files, printers and modems anywhere in the distributed network environment, regardless of physical location. DSS benefits network administrators by allowing them to more easily manage a large number of users. With DSS, resources, users and groups can be administered according to the way the company is structured, rather than making the organization fit into the limits of existing directory technologies such as Novell's NDS. For example, DSS does not require unified administration and usage procedures for multiple organizations within a network. Therefore, separate groups and organizations can be integrated into an enterprise without being forced to completely revise existing procedures and practices. Because of this flexibility, administrators are able to quickly and easily adapt to organizational changes caused by such things as reorganizations, acquisitions and mergers. Another important feature DSS provides is the ability to integrate distinct groups into an enterprise network over a wide geographical area. These groups and resources can be maintained locally, remotely or centrally, allowing more flexibility in network administration. For large organizations that use groups to differentiate departments or lines of business, DSS increases the number of groups possible on each server, as well as the number of individuals within a group. Therefore, customized groups can be created based on operating needs and more users can be given simpler resource access. In addition, DSS easily integrates with Warp Server and LAN Server 4.0 by utilizing and extending a similar graphical user interface and drag-and-drop system management tools. Because DSS inherits server operating system icons and menus, administrators simply view DSS functions as additional features of Warp Server or LAN Server 4.0 and are able to use their existing skills and knowledge, saving customers time and money on retraining. "Global directory and security services are emerging as critical components of robust Internet and intranet client server solutions," said Lee W. Doyle, vice president of worldwide LAN and data communications, International Data Corporation. "Products like IBM's new cross-platform Directory and Security Server for OS/2 Warp are targeted to streamline the management and administration of existing LANs while providing a significant step toward distributed computing." DSS Provides Investment Protection DSS does not force simultaneous replacement of all servers in a network. Because DSS seamlessly and transparently extends the scope of Warp Server and LAN Server, the customer is not saddled with additional network system replacement expenditures. Plus, most applications that run on Warp Server and LAN Server 4.0 continue to run unchanged with the addition of DSS, once again protecting customers' investments in software and training. In addition, since many companies have made investments in a variety of different computing platforms, network integration is a key financial, as well as ease-of-use, concern. Because DSS is open and integrates heterogeneous network environments, it protects customers' current system investments. DSS also provides directory and security capabilities that are scalable from very small groups to tens of thousands of users. As a result, a customer's initial investment will continue to pay off as DSS scales to meet the evolving needs of a growing business. Easy Installation and Smart Migration DSS eases installation by providing the option to either use a command line install path or the graphical user interface, and allows for "staged" migration. This enables the customer to install DSS on just one computer initially and quickly take advantage of the benefits of a global directory. DSS also provides easy-to-use, smart migration tools. DSS migration tools take existing Warp Server or LAN Server directory and security databases and merge them into the DSS databases. In addition, Warp Server has a NetWare migration tool which provides easier migration of NetWare 2.x & 3.x clients to Warp Server. As a result, the NetWare client users benefit from the many features Warp Server offers over NetWare, such as system management, backup & recovery and remote access. Because DSS is available separately as an add-on to Warp Server and the Warp Server workgroup directory, the customers determine if and when they want to move up to a hierarchical enterprise directory solution, unlike competitive offerings which only offer a single, proprietary directory solution. DSS is Open DSS is based on the Open Software Foundation (now The Open Group) Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) Version 1.1. It provides multiplatform integration and support for transparent, secure access to other systems in heterogeneous, multi-location networks. All systems and applications which support DCE can interoperate with DSS for OS/2 Warp. These include products from Hewlett-Packard, Digital Equipment Corporation, Oracle, Platinum, Open Systems Associates as well as from IBM with its MVS, OS/400 and AIX offerings. DSS also supports all clients that are supported by OS/2 Warp Server or LAN Server (OS/2, Windows, DOS, Macintosh) as well as all DCE clients. As a result, DSS interoperability protects customers' current system investments and eases the administration of a heterogeneous network environment. In addition, DSS provides a global enterprise network view, through which the administrator can make multiplatform user modifications such as changes to user passwords and network privileges. DSS allows administrators to simply update network domain controllers, rather than individual clients, in order to consolidate various network domains throughout the enterprise into one logical network view. DSS also includes an OS/2 client that provides a single sign-on capability. For DSS and DCE clients, single sign-on means one password logon to the entire enterprise network, including access to multi-vendor system resources across mini and mainframe platforms. DSS also supports heterogeneous networks using open protocols and APIs such as industry standard X.500 directory protocols and the Internet Domain Name Standard. DSS Provides End-to-End System Security DSS provides secure network access based on the DCE security architecture and Kerberos third-party authentication. DSS has three key security concepts: authentication, encryption and authorization. Kerberos third-party authentication is more sophisticated than a basic password scheme and provides a trusted security server capable of authenticating both the client and server. The DSS security server stores user passwords and ensures passwords never have to pass over the network. During logon, the password is used to generate an encrypted key. The encrypted key, which is passed back and forth to the server, changes periodically and makes this scheme even more secure than an encrypted password network. Finally, user authorization is established to determine what access privileges the various clients have on the network, providing total, end-to-end system confidence. "We applaud and support IBM's new Directory and Security Server for OS/2 Warp," said Jagdish Pamnani, Oracle senior product line manager. "Oracle has been working closely with IBM to ensure that the next release of SQL*NET-DCE for OS/2 Warp, which is expected in the third quarter, exploits the features of DSS. Because DSS and SQL*NET-DCE are both based on open industry-standard technology, the combination provides real choices to customers operating enterprise networks in multiplatform environments. The availability of our network product for DSS also reinforces Oracle's ongoing commitment to the OS/2 family of products." DSS Offers Application Developer Support DSS allows software vendors and corporate developers to more easily develop distributed applications by using familiar Warp Server or LAN Server procedure calls. In addition, most existing Warp Server and LAN Server applications will run on the distributed network. Plus, due to the open availability of the APIs included in DSS, developers can write distributed applications that work on any DCE platform, thus increasing the market potential for their products. "IBM's Directory and Security Server is an integral part of PLATINUM's distributed application solution," said Garry Hallee, vice president of application lifecycle solutions for PLATINUM Technology, Inc. "PLATINUM RuleServer, our client/server deployment option for logically complex applications, uses the DCE components of DSS for secure communications, cell directory services and security services. With DSS, our customers can meet their three-tier client/server computing needs with the confidence that comes from using a tested, scalable solution." Availability and Pricing The Directory and Security Server for OS/2 Warp will be available in July for OS/2 Warp Server Version 4 and OS/2 LAN Server 4.0. DSS will be offered as a shrink-wrapped product. It can be ordered through IBM representatives and the reseller channel. The suggested retail price is $3,999. This package price includes directory services code, security services code, integration code and client code. As a generalized message queuing subsystem, this program can be accessed from CICS/ESA(R), CICS/MVS(R), IMS/ESA(R), batch MVS/ESA environments, and TSO/E. MQSeries for MVS/ESA is part of the MQSeries family of products, which enable applications to use message-driven processing for assured data exchange between applications running on dissimilar systems. With message-driven processing, applications can communicate across the same, or different, platforms by using the appropriate MQSeries products. The award-winning* MQSeries offers many advantages over existing methods. The exchange of messages between sending and receiving programs can be time independent, and applications can transfer data with high data integrity. Message delivery can be implemented using a syncpoint mechanism for the recovery of important data in the event of system failure. Because MQSeries assures that a message is delivered once and only once, application programmers do not have to worry about message delivery. It provides a straightforward interface consistent on all platforms. Using MQSeries, programmers can use their skills to solve business problems, not network problems. The message queuing interface, MQI, is documented in the MQSeries Message Queue Interface Technical Reference (SC33-0850). IBM MQSeries for MVS/ESA Version 1.1.4 contains the following new function: * Provides an IMS(TM) Bridge to allow access from MQSeries programs to both legacy and new IMS/ESA applications. LOUIS, June 24, 1996 -- Hewlett-Packard Company and Tivoli Systems today announced that they have developed an open, vendor-neutral application programming interface for managing the performance of distributed applications. The Application Response Measurement (ARM) API is designed to measure end-to-end application response time, allowing vendors to create management ready applications and end users to measure and control the total performance of their business-critical distributed applications. The lack of effective applications management capabilities is often cited as the major barrier to the broad deployment of client/server solutions. The ARM API is an open management interface that will allow users to extend their system and network management tools directly to applications, creating a comprehensive end-to-end management capability. The objective of the ARM API is to enable vendors of off-the-shelf applications, development tools and management tools, as well as systems integrators and in-house information technology (IT) departments, to produce management ready applications and management tools. "We feel that the ARM API will solve an important need in improving the manageability of mission-critical business applications. It allows users and IT management to accurately associate application performance to meaningful information based on business requirements. We intend to instrument selected applications using this technology," said Andy Spencer, capacity planning manager for Paychex Inc. By instrumenting an application to the ARM API, vendors and users create applications that have the ability to establish and monitor service levels that are tied to business objectives. The full range of benefits and performance-management operations of the ARM API include the following: - monitoring of application availability; - monitoring of application performance (that is, response time, workload throughput and actual service levels); - monitoring of application usage (that is, who is using the application, how often and which kind of operations are being performed); -an open standard approach for measuring end-to-end transaction response time; and - the opportunity to cost effectively make management-ready applications. "Measuring application response time has become a business necessity with users expecting around-the-clock availability and continuously outstanding performance," said Mark Solle, general manager of HP's Software Services and Technology Division. "HP and Tivoli have combined their industry-leading expertise to offer customers a way to measure application performance against their business needs and expectations." "Performance management is a key area of need for our partners and users alike," said Scott Harmon, vice president of marketing and strategy for Tivoli Systems. "It made perfect sense to work with HP in this area because our two companies have some of the industry's most advanced performance management technology available today, as well as the partnerships to effect widespread use of the ARM API." Collaboration for Broad Industry Support Both companies plan to make the ARM API available as part of their management product lines and are supporting it as part of ongoing work with their respective partner organizations. In addition, both companies have said they would seek technical input, review and refinement from their respective partner organizations. Using this input, as well as customer feedback, HP and Tivoli plan to continue to advance the ARM API. The HP OpenView program plans to provide ARM support as part of its HP MeasureWare resource- and performance-management solutions. This capability is slated to be available by midsummer. The ARM API will be an integrated component of the HP OpenView management API set, which is reviewed by select HP OpenView partners. Tivoli plans to support for the ARM API in its TME 10 family of network computing management products. Additionally, Tivoli plans to incorporate it into the Applications Management Specification (AMS), which is controlled by its partners in the applications management working group of the 10/Plus Association. Implementing the ARM API To help ensure that application developers will be fully equipped to use the new ARM API, the HP OpenView Program and Tivoli have collaborated on an ARM Software Developers Kit (SDK). The SDK makes it easy for developers to mark sections of their application to define business transactions. By invoking the API at the beginning and end of each transaction, developers enable their applications to be monitored by any ARM-compliant management tool. The SDK is designed to allow developers to instrument to the ARM with minimal impact on their application. All of the libraries and other tools necessary to interface to a development tool are included in the kit so that developers don't have to write additional code. ARM API Software Developers Kit Availability The ARM Software Developers Kit is immediately available at no charge from the HP OpenView Program and Tivoli at their respective World Wide Web sites: http://www.hp.com/go/arm and http://www.tivoli.com. "We want this defined set of users to test drive the product and experience how easy it is to talk to their computers," said Wally Casey, vice president of client product management, IBM Software Group. "Now getting on the Internet is as easy as saying: 'Jump to 1996 Olympic Games,' and you're there. You can go through your existing electronic mail software by telling your computer to 'open,' 'discard,' 'next,' 'reply,' and so on -- all without having to touch the keyboard or the mouse. Worldwide Beta Program IBM is shipping the beta software to 10,000 qualified beta testers worldwide, including current OS/2 Warp customers, software developers, computer hardware vendors, channel partners -- including IBM's Business Enterprise Solutions Team (BESTeam) members -- and other business partners worldwide. From now until July 27, beta testers will have an opportunity to put the new OS/2 Warp through its paces, thoroughly test it and provide feedback to IBM's development team which will help fine tune and shape final product features. Users already have been applying for the beta program through an IBM home page that was posted last week in preparation for the beta's release. More information about IBM's beta program is available at http://www.austin.ibm.com/pspinfo/betahome.html. "We are using the beta as if it were in full production -- it's that stable. It will make computer users sit up and take notice of OS/2 Warp," said Bill Howey, project manager for the Advanced Technology Platform for Mazda Motor of America. "This it truly where the future of computing is heading -- this release of OS/2 Warp drives that point home more than any other software package I've seen." OS/2 Warp Changes the Way You Interact With Your Computer With IBM's latest VoiceType* technology in speech navigation and dictation, OS/2 Warp will be the first major Intel-based operating system solution to include speech recognition. Since it does not require training or additional hardware, OS/2 Warp takes the concept of ease-of-use to an entirely new level. Under this plan, Lotus will rapidly evolve the Domino technology to deliver a Web server based on Internet-only standards, as well as a line of specialized Web servers, clients and tools that exploit core Notes technologies. The Notes product line will continue to support a superset of heterogeneous protocols that is inclusive of those supported by Domino II. Unveiled at PC Expo, key elements of the plan include a line of Domino II Servers, built entirely on Internet-only standards and protocols, including TCP/IP, HTTP, SMTP, POP3, IMAP4, LDAP, SSL and X.509, as well as the HTML data format. The first in this line of Domino II Servers will feature the Notes-based object store, enabling high-performance storage and retrieval of objects, including HTML pages, MIME and S/MIME messages, JPEG and GIF images, Java and Lotuscript applets, forms, views, folders, and other application-defined objects. A native, open programming interface will be provided through support for the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA). CORBA is a standard and distributed method for accessing object services from a choice of programming languages, such as Java, C++, and C. Distributed access to CORBA services is provided via IIOP, the Internet Inter-Orb Protocol. Lotus will make the Domino II Server's object services available for trial to prospective customers and partners via the Lotus Web site later this year. This will be the first in a series of Domino II Servers from Lotus, with others to include specialized servers for mail and directory services, among others. "Domino has generated a tremendous amount of excitement because it releases Notes' unique application development facilities, replication engine, and security to the Internet, while providing Web client choice," said Jeff Papows, executive vice president and COO at Lotus. "Our next-generation product line will build on these facilities, making it possible for customers to choose the elements of the server they want, whether it's to publish to the Web, host discussions, or build the class of robust groupware applications that Notes has defined." Also key to the Domino II product line will be an Interactive Application Designer package, to be tightly integrated with the Domino II Servers. The Designer client offers a range of rapid application development tools for the Internet -- from collaboration templates such as those introduced to Web users for the first time with Domino -- to tools aimed at aiding developers in delivering next-generation, mission critical business applications for the Web. Finally, Lotus will ship a new Mobile Web Information Manager, also built entirely on Internet standards and protocols. This Web client leverages Notes' unique support for mobile users, world-class messaging, and industry-leading collaboration applications, and will feature a new class of Web personal information management tools leveraging Lotus agent technology. It will also offer integration with desktop applications, as well as ActiveX/OCX components. The first products in the Domino II product line will be available on the Lotus Web site, www.lotus.com, by the end of this year. Domino Stands Alone Available for download today, Domino is targeted at meeting users' needs not only for publishing static information, but for the new class of highly interactive Internet and intranet applications now being demanded by customers. Domino stands alone among Web servers in offering the types of directory, agent, replication, application development, management, security and enterprise integration services needed by customers today. Lotus also leads through its support by a rich community of over 12,000 Business Partners, many of which have been building interactive groupware applications for more than six years. According to Alan Baren, Manager in Coopers & Lybrand's Strategic Technology Group: "We're planning on using Domino to enhance our Notes infrastructure and broaden connectivity to clients and vendors through the Web. Any IS organization looking to support the full range of Web applications quickly and inexpensively from publishing to collaborative, workflow applications, should now be considering Notes. IBM is demonstrating a prototype of a high availability clustering solution running on OS/2* Warp Server Version 4 this week at PC Expo. The prototype is based on existing clustering technology available on IBM's RS/6000 platform with AIX* as well as newly developed software technology from IBM Research. "IBM customers depend on OS/2 Warp Server for reliability and stability of their business critical applications. This prototype demonstrates how we are able to provide further value to these customers by extending IBM's leadership in clustering technology into the PC server space," said Art Olbert, vice president of server products, IBM Personal Software Products. "We've chosen to concentrate on enabling Warp Server for symmetric-multiprocessing first, as many customers will be rolling out SMP systems soon. But there is also a growing number of our customers requiring higher availability and distributed scalability. This demonstration shows how we are able to address that need." The prototype is based on an infrastructure being developed by IBM to provide high availability of clustered servers to support business critical applications running on OS/2 Warp Server in the event of a failure in any single component of the system. The IBM OS/2 Warp Server Clustering Demonstration The OS/2 Warp Server clustering prototype is a mutual failover system that provides detection of both node and application failures. In this type of system, if a server or application running on a server fails, that server's workload immediately "fails over" over to the operational server. The server which has failed can then be reintegrated into the cluster once it has been recovered. To demonstrate these capabilities, IBM has constructed a highly available application built on top of the IBM Database Server for OS/2, the IBM Internet Connection Server for OS/2, and the IBM Internet Connection DB2 Gateway. The application is started on one server of a two-node cluster of servers, each running OS/2 Warp Server. The servers are connected via a public token-ring network, which also includes a client machine running OS/2 Warp Connect. The application accesses and updates data in an IBM DB2 database, which resides on a SCSI disk shared by the two servers. One of the servers is then disabled in order to demonstrate mutual failover. Because all networking connections are based on industry standard, non-proprietary components, no special hardware or networking protocol is required. Using this sample application, IBM is able to demonstrate detection and recovery of node and application failures, reintegration of failed nodes, and cluster management. The prototype supports both standby and mutual failover modes and ensures application availability in the event of processor error, power outage or hard disk or operating system failure. Management of the cluster is possible through extensions in the prototype to TME 10 NetFinity* systems management software, which allows GUI administration of a clustering environment. Through an easy to use front end, system administrators are able to define the destination of failed resources, monitor the status of servers and highly available applications, reintegrate failed nodes, and balance the loads on each server through manual failovers. These functions can be performed at a management workstation that need not be part of the cluster. Clustering Solutions Offered Today by IBM IBM has been a leader in clustering mid-range and high-end UNIX and mainframe servers for high availability and scalability for many years on its RS/6000 line with AIX and High Availability Cluster Multiprocessing (HACMP), and with its parallel processing platforms, including the RS/6000 SP* and System/390* Parallel Sysplex product offerings. Because an increasing number of customers are requiring these types of high availability and scalability solutions in the PC server space, the IBM Personal Software Products division is working on bringing this technology to the x86 platform on OS/2 Warp Server. Vinca StandbyServer for OS/2 Warp Server In addition to the prototype demonstrated this week, IBM has already been working with industry partners on clustering solutions, as evidenced by Vinca Corporation's StandbyServer** for OS/2 Warp Server product, released in March. The product is a server mirroring solution that delivers server fault tolerance and high data availability to OS/2 Warp Server or OS/2 LAN Server. StandbyServer allows a secondary duplicate server to be connected to the main server. If the main server fails, the secondary server takes over automatically, keeping mission critical applications up and running, preventing expensive downtime. StandbyServer has been tested and proven compatible with Lotus Notes*** and takes advantage of systems management features in TME 10 NetFinity software such as remote notification and monitoring. OS/2 Warp Server: The Complete Business Solution OS/2 Warp Server, released at the end of February, is IBM's business server solution for customers ranging from small businesses to large enterprises. It provides a foundation for application serving and file and print sharing, plus a wealth of integrated features including systems management, backup and recovery, remote access, enhanced TCP/IP support, advanced print function and LAN Internet access. An SMP-enablement feature for OS/2 Warp Server is currently in beta testing. The OS/2 Warp Family of Products Providing solutions from the client to the server, the OS/2 Warp family of products includes: OS/2 Warp, OS/2 Warp Connect, Merlin (the code name for the next version of the OS/2 Warp client), OS/2 Warp Server, OS/2 Warp Server SMP, and the IBM Directory and Security Server for OS/2. * Indicates a trademark or registered trademark of IBM Corp. ** Indicates a trademark of Vinca Corp. *** Indicates a registered trademark of Lotus Development Corp. At A/E/C SYSTEMS** today, IBM* announced that it has joined the Industry Alliance for Interoperability (IAI), and been named to the IAI Board of Directors. IBM has already begun working with other leading companies in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry in the development and use of common Industry Foundation Classes from the (IAI). Three parts of IBM are involved in the effort -- IBM's Architecture/Engineering Application Business Unit, the North American Construction Industry Marketing Segment, and the Corporate Real Estate and Site Operations staff. The IAI is an open organization founded in 1995 to create Industry Foundation Classes (IFC), a common language that can be used by software developers to write applications that will share information across disciplines and throughout the life-cycle of a building project - from design through construction, occupancy and management. IBM was one of the first companies to provide integrated solutions for collaboration in the AEC industry. In 1988, IBM introduced the Architecture & Engineering Series, a suite of 10 integrated modules for various disciplines in the design industry. Last year, based on the successful solutions being used for the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway, and other major facility owners worldwide, IBM introduced the Total Information & Planning System for Facilities Management (TiPS- fm), which further integrates building data with personnel, furniture, equipment and a limitless range of non-graphic data across a company. IBM's Architecture / Engineering Application Business Unit develops A&ES and TiPS-fm for the Architectural Design and Facility Management segments. "Integration of the disciplines and information used throughout a building's life has always been a feature of our products. Joining the other major developers and users of software in the creation of standards that everyone can use is a natural and welcome extension of our process," said Bill Hohensee, director of IBM's Architecture / Engineering Application Business Unit. "A good example is our role supporting the Olympics with the Total Information & Planning System for Facilities Management. There are dozens of applications, user organizations and databases required to plan, construct and manage the facilities. Having the IFC available will make that task much easier in the future." IBM's Real Estate and Site Operations (RE/SO) group is one of the largest owner/operator real estate organizations in the world. In 1996, IBM RE/SO is implementing worldwide information technology standards for more than 5,000 users. "These standards will require applications which are readily available, accepted by the industry, and fully interoperable," said Gary Hack, Chief Information Officer for IBM RE/SO. "We are excited about the value that the IFC and IFC-based applications will bring, and look forward to continued involvement with the IAI in the development of the facility management domain model." IBM's North American Construction Industry Marketing Segment provides information technology products and services to professionals in all types of AEC companies, from large engineering/constructors to home builders and interior designers. "We consult with customers on a daily basis and the need to collaborate and improve communication on projects is a key business requirement," said Chuck Masur, North America AEC Business Unit Executive. "The IFC and the work of the IAI will be a key component in these companies' future success and we will be there as an information technology partner providing IFC-based solutions." According to Ken Herold, executive director of the IAI. "We are very pleased to have IBM as a member. They are able to fill dual roles as a technology provider and user. We hope other large owners will follow their lead and contribute in the outstanding manner IBM has." In related announcements, the IAI has appointed IBM to its Board of Directors. IBM joins the following companies on the board: Autodesk Inc.; HOK Inc.; Jaros, Baum & Bolles; Bentley Systems, Inc.; Lucent Technologies; Primavera Systems, Inc.; Timberline Software Corp.; Turner Construction Co.; Carrier Corp.; Honeywell; Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory; and Softdesk Inc. Primavera and IBM jointly announced they will be providing "Contractor's Desktops," plug and play solutions designed to drop in on a job site or office and provide common tools a contractor needs. The combination of these products extends Notes' position as the most complete client/server enterprise development and deployment platform. The products include: IBM MQSeries link for Lotus Notes - provides an enhanced link through a LotusScript Extension to transaction-based systems, and provides the ability to seamlessly integrate Notes and transaction processes at the programming level. ODBC Driver for Notes, (NotesSQL) Release 2 - allows users to easily query and update Notes data from any ODBC (Open Database Connectivity) -compliant database using familiar SQL commands, with enhanced 32-bit and 16-bit Windows versions as well as a version for IBM OS/2 Warp. LotusScript:Data Object - permits Notes clients and servers to access and update any ODBC-compatible RDBMS (Relational Database Management System) using LotusScript. Lotus NotesPump Release 2 - provides scheduled, high-volume, server-based interchange allowing developers and database administrators to keep relational databases and Notes databases synchronized. Oracle LSX - allows Notes clients and servers to read and write Oracle databases and systems using SQL*Net (Oracle native network protocol stacks). LotusScript Extension (LSX) Toolkit - enables corporate developers and Lotus Business Partners to extend Notes by creating new custom objects that can be accessed from LotusScript by adding their own custom functionality to the Notes client and server platforms. The LSX Toolkit enables a wide range of applications and users to take advantage of Notes' groupware and Internet application development capabilities. "The ability to integrate Notes applications with critical legacy systems provides for an enterprise application development system that is unrivaled in the industry," said Michael D. Zisman, Lotus executive vice president and CEO. "This integration, combined with Notes' support of Internet standards through the Notes HTTP server (Domino), enables extremely powerful, interactive Web applications that can completely leverage and exploit enterprise information." Enterprise Transaction System Integration The enhanced IBM MQSeries link for Lotus Notes, now implemented as an LSX, provides developers with direct access to transaction systems from LotusScript, allowing them to manipulate the high-volume, business critical processes supported by IBM's MQSeries middleware within the core Notes environment. By leveraging the power of transaction systems within Notes applications, MQSeries link for Lotus Notes masks network complexities, permitting easy development of complex solutions. Notes developers now have access to features like in-flight transaction backout and the reuse of operational applications that can be combined with Notes' support for mobile and Internet/intranet users. IBM's MQSeries link provides an asynchronous, queued messaging infrastructure to complement Notes' store-and-forward messaging. Notes developers can combine Notes messaging-enabled applications with MQSeries requests to transaction systems even when users are disconnected from a LAN. Enterprise Relational Database Integration In addition to Notes access and control of transaction-based systems, Lotus offers powerful, bi-directional access to relational databases to leverage corporate information. The ODBC Driver for Lotus Notes (NotesSQL) Release 2 enables ODBC-compliant RDBMSs and data query tools to seamlessly access, query and update Notes-based information. By making Notes databases resemble a relational database to external DBMSs, NotesSQL allows developers working primarily with relational tools to use SQL to access and manipulate data stored in Notes databases, as well as create dynamic connections between Notes and other RDBMS tables. NotesSQL combines the power of structured data with workflow and messaging capabilities of Notes. Release 2 extends ODBC access to 32-bit Windows environments, including Windows 95 and Windows NT, and to OS/2 Warp 3.0, in addition to updating 16-bit Windows support. Allowing integration of Notes workflow and messaging capabilities with ODBC-compliant RDBMS back-ends, the LotusScript:Data Object permits Notes clients and servers to access and update any ODBC-compatible RDBMS using LotusScript. This allows developers to perform ad-hoc, real-time queries and updates of operational data for immediate updates to information. This, combined with Domino, increases the value of Notes applications over the Web by uniquely providing complete and easy-to-use relational database integration capabilities to Web application developers. For example, a sales force automation application can check a customer's current order quantity and automatically place that information into a Notes form. In addition, NotesPump Release 2 provides scheduled, high volume, enterprise-scalable, server-based data interchange. By supporting dissimilar database replication, NotesPump allows developers to keep relational databases and Notes databases synchronized automatically. Release 2 extends NotesPump server capabilities to the HP-UX 10.01 operating system as well as to IBM DB2. NotesPump servers are manageable via SNMP management systems and leverage Notes Release 4 ease-of-use features including Navigators, and collapsible forms to facilitate easier management of server tasks. With support for IBM DB2, the NotesPump server can distribute or replicate DB2 data on all IBM supported platforms. Custom support for the IBM DataPropagator Relational (DPropR) is included, permitting changes in DB2 data to be propagated to NotesPump-supported target databases. In addition, NotesPump supports transfer and automatic conversion of international language character sets. NotesPump Release 2 also provides Notes developers with a set of LotusScript classes which enables the creation of custom, sophisticated data exchange applications. Now, Notes developers can manipulate data being processed by the NotesPump engine to customize their applications. For example, using the NotesPump LSX classes, a sales amount entered to an RDBMS source can be multiplied by a commission value, then updated to one or multiple targets. For Oracle users, the Oracle LSX provides native connections to Oracle databases using SQL*Net. By accessing Oracle data via the native network protocol stacks, this link provides insert, update and delete capabilities from within Lotus Notes via LotusScript. This link also has the ability to initiate Oracle transactions or stored procedures, and allows the developer to choose between auto commit or manual commit modes. The LSX Toolkit enables corporate users and Business Partners to extend the core Notes application development platform by providing an easy way to create LotusScript objects. Using the resources provided in the LSX Toolkit, C++ developers can create modules that become part of the Notes application development environment. They may be used in combination with the Notes Object Model to enhance Notes server and client capabilities. The MQSeries link, LotusScript:Data Object, Oracle LSX, and NotesPump Release 2 programmability enhancements are all examples of LotusScript classes created with the technology available in the LSX Toolkit. "This broad, open set of capabilities expands Notes connectivity, integrating the strengths of transaction systems with the strengths of Notes applications to create an offering that's much more than the sum of its parts," said Matt Cain of the META Group. "Combined with Notes Internet application development capabilities, these extensions provide developers with the ability to exploit the corporate knowledge base." They will also be able to edit spreadsheets and word processing documents while still in Notes Mail. The next version of OS/2 Warp also enables users to keep messages private. Users can click the "For Your Eyes Only" icon to restrict the ability of the recipient to forward a message; it turns off cut, copy, paste, printing and forwarding commands while allowing the recipient to reply only to the sender. Since Notes Mail is a Notes Release 4 client, users can leverage the extensive facilities of the Notes Release 4 server to support scalable, reliable and secure client/server e-mail on the LAN or in a mobile environment. You Can Take It With You An increasingly important need for computer users is to access e-mail on the road or from home. Notes Mail provides the user with superior mobile e-mail support, in addition to its other strong connectivity features. With one click, users can specify their locations, communication methods and access codes, as well as different levels of access: full messages with embedded attachments, message headers only or the message header and the first few pages of a message. A challenge for mobile users, who constantly switch from laptops to desktops, is to remember which computer holds which e-mail. Lotus Notes Mail and the new version of OS/2 Warp will solve that problem by providing a mailbox replication tool that automatically synchronizes between messages stored on the user's laptop and those on the local area network server. "The ability to properly manage remote e-mail access coupled with a fully functional e-mail word processor is critical in today's business environment," said Jess Hurwitz, vice president at Parallel Storage Solutions, Inc. "Lotus Notes Mail permits me to control the way I access my e-mail, allowing me to download entire messages or simply the message header depending how much time I have between flights or meetings. Best of all, I can easily access and manage messages stored on my company network -- even if I'm traveling or working from home." Improve Personal Productivity Helping users to be more productive, Notes Mail provides a task management application that allows them to develop and manage "To Do" lists. Employees on the road, for instance, can assign tasks remotely to other colleagues and track their progress. Integrated form filler and workflow capabilities let users route forms and documents to others for action. Because Notes Mail is a Release 4 client, it leverages the powerful enhancements that have been made to Lotus Notes, the leading solution that integrates messaging, groupware, and the Internet for developing and deploying custom client/server and Web-based applications. More than 7,000 companies and 3.3 million people already use Notes to improve key business processes such as customer service, sales and account management, and product development More About the New OS/2 Warp With IBM's latest VoiceType* technology in speech navigation and dictation, OS/2 Warp will be the first major Intel-based operating system solution to come with speech recognition, taking the concept of ease-of-use to an entirely new level. It will also be the first PC operating system solution to include Sun Microsystems' Java technology and the first desktop operating system to organize all system management tools in one folder. In addition to its improved system management and unmatched connectivity features, the product will provide customers with a broad range of enhancements, including an improved user interface which includes an enhanced version of the Lotus SmartCenter and new ease-of-use features. Other features, like superior networking capabilities, and OpenDoc for OS/2 Warp run-time support, should distinguish OS/2 Warp as the operating system solution of choice for the connected consumer to the large enterprise customer. * OS/2 and VoiceType are trademarks or registered trademarks of IBM Corporation. Lotus Notes Pager Gateway 2.0 improves the transmission of information from the desktop to popular alphanumeric or PCMCIA pagers through message abbreviation, an open API architecture for support of multiple paging protocols including two-way paging, additional e-mail fields and multiple communication ports that allow groups of people to receive pages simultaneously. With Lotus Notes Pager Gateway 2.0, Notes users can program agents to alert pagers of updates to databases or e-mail files, allowing time-sensitive information to be communicated instantaneously. For example, a potential customer can fill out a form on a company's Web page requesting product information; upon submission of the form, Pager Gateway 2.0 will automatically send a page message to the appropriate sales representative so that he or she can respond to the request immediately. Pager Gateway 2.0 permits organizations with large teams of people on the road to more effectively coordinate customer service, field sales, technical support and other strategic activities. With the implementation of a supporting paging vendor's two-way paging driver, users can also receive pager replies from two-way pagers through Notes Mail, and send messages to mobile users carrying handheld or laptop computers. Lotus cc:Mail users with access to Lotus Notes can take advantage of the Pager Gateway by using the Lotus Mail Exchange Facility to transmit messages to pagers. Additionally, cc:Mail systems can deliver messages to pagers through the Lotus cc:Mail Pager Gateway. Lotus Notes Pager Gateway 2.0 delivers messages via the Telocator Alphanumeric Paging (TAP) industry standard protocol for transmission of pages and includes Lotus' open Paging Service Provider API (PSPAPI). Support for national and regional paging service providers in the U.S. and Canada include: AT&T Wireless (McCaw), MobileComm, PageMart, PageNet and SkyTel. New paging vendors supported under Lotus Notes Pager Gateway 2.0 include American Paging, Arch Communications and MetroCall, Inc. "Lotus Notes Pager Gateway 2.0 extends the collaborative capabilities of Notes by enabling users to send and receive important messages and monitor time-critical information regardless of where they happen to be," said Joseph Forgione, vice president, Lotus Business Multimedia Products. "The result is an increase in productivity for workgroups that rely on real-time communication for success." New Pager Vendor Relationships Announced Lotus is in the process of compatibility testing with American Paging, AT&T Wireless (McCaw), PageMart, PageNet and SkyTel one-way and two-way networks to make Lotus Notes Pager Gateway 2.0 available to the most widespread user base possible. Vendor training, marketing and sales force cooperation programs will be implemented. Lotus will also work with certified vendors on long-term development of pager technology, products and services. "With Lotus Notes Pager Gateway 2.0, SkyTel subscribers get the collaborative benefits of Lotus Notes with the simplicity and mobility of paging," said Doug Brackbill, senior vice president, Advanced Applications, SkyTel. "This integration enables mobile users to more effectively manage workflow when they're on the road." "We do a lot of work with hospitals where the medical staff rely on pagers to communicate important patient information," said Brian Rowe, president, Cobra Technologies, Inc., a Lotus Business Partner that has paged-enabled a variety of Notes applications for its clients. "The new response options offered by Lotus Notes Pager Gateway 2.0 allow physicians to respond significantly faster to questions from others on their patient teams, facilitating improved patient care. The Lotus Notes Pager Gateway 2.0 has transformed the pager into a productivity tool for our consultants as well," said Rowe. "Because we can now use pagers to receive and respond to client requests, we've cut down on our cellular phone costs and increased our response times. Many times, we can resolve questions entirely through pager contact." Organizations in all industries will see more efficient communication of critical information and increased collaborative options through Lotus Notes Pager Gateway 2.0, including: o Flexibility in transmission and reception of lengthy messages: New message abstraction options allow the sender to specify one of two options, automatic text or abbreviation, which allow lengthy messages to be read more quickly. o Faster transmission of pages: Support for multiple communication ports eliminates message queues, delivering information to groups of mobile users within minutes. o Increased message delivery options: Additional e-mail fields allow messages to be copied to multiple pagers or desktops. o Workflow capability through supporting paging vendors' two-way communication drivers: Support for two-way paging means that decisions can be communicated and projects moved forward while team members are in far-flung locations. Availability, Pricing and System Requirements Lotus Notes Pager Gateway 2.0 will be available in August through Lotus Business Partners and Lotus Authorized Resellers in the U.S. and Canada for an estimated retail price of $2500. Lotus Notes Pager Gateway 2.0 runs on a Windows NT server and supports Lotus Notes Server Edition Release 3.0 or higher. It requires an IBM compatible Pentium-based PC with at least 32 MB RAM and 50MB of free disk space, one or more dedicated communications ports, a Hayes-compatible modem, an analog phone line and access to a commercial paging service. IBM today shipped VoiceType* 3.0 for Windows 95*, enabling users to work with their computer simply by talking to it. Without even touching a keyboard or mouse, computer users can open applications, dictate memos, e-mail messages and edit documents with the most accurate speech recognition product on the market. "Speech recognition technology is improving by leaps and bounds, and quickly moving towards the mainstream computing market," said Jan Winston, IBM's worldwide Speech Systems manager. "With this latest addition to the VoiceType family, VoiceType 3.0, we improve the highest accuracy rate and word throughput in the industry, making IBM the leader when it comes to the way people will work and use their computers." VoiceType 3.0 is especially useful for customers who generate large amounts of text and need to increase efficiency and reduce turn-around time, as well as for those in professions that require hands-free computing. For example, business executives can efficiently process electronic mail by simply telling the computer: "next," "discard," "reply," and so on. Start Talking Right Away The newest member of IBM's VoiceType family features a combination of continuous navigation and discrete dictation in a speaker-independent product. Speaker-independent means that users do not have to train the computer to adapt to their individual voice. People can begin talking to their computer immediately, right out of the box. The software's ability to learn as users continue to use it enables the computer to improve the accuracy rate over time. In addition, users can dictate text directly into the most popular applications such as WordPro*, Word*, and Lotus Notes*. Delayed and delegated correction capabilities are also new to VoiceType 3.0. Delayed correction allows a user to edit a document hours or days after dictating the original. Delegated correction lets the user pass the original letter, memo or other document to someone else in the department for editing purposes. The person responsible for editing the dictated document can open it immediately and make changes. In addition, VoiceType 3.0 records the voice of the original user, which can then be played back during the editing process to help with contextual understanding of words or phrases in the dictated text. Other improvements include compatibility with industry standard sound cards, like SoundBlaster*, and IBM's Mwave* media processor, and continuous speech navigation. The continuous speech function lets users interact naturally with the computer when using the navigation feature. For example, the software program will respond accurately to the command, 'Go to Lotus Notes*' and 'open mail.' Speech Capabilities for OS/2 The next client version of IBM's 32-bit OS/2 operating system, code-named Merlin, will include a subset of VoiceType speech navigation and dictation capabilities integrated into OS/2. The integrated product continues to extend IBM's leadership in the speech recognition marketplace across multiple platforms. Merlin, in beta this month, will ship later this year. System Requirements The new version of VoiceType works with most Pentium* computers available today, which are equipped with industry-standard sound cards, such as SoundBlaster, and does not require additional hardware. System requirements for VoiceType 3.0 are 30 MB hard disk, 16 MB RAM and a 90 MHz Pentium with 256K L2 cache or faster. Availability and Pricing VoiceType 3.0 for Windows 95 is priced at $699, with upgrades for previous users of VoiceType, including OS/2 and Windows 3.x, listed at $99. Both the standalone version and upgrade, which ship with a microphone at no additional cost, are available today from IBM Business Partners. In addition, IBM will ship VoiceType 3.0 for Windows 95 in Spanish, French, German, Italian and U.K. English by the end of the month. IBM, with a family of VoiceType products and more than twenty years of research, has built a team of speech recognition specialists worldwide, dedicated to the development, support and sale of VoiceType solutions in many languages. The VoiceType family of products includes VoiceType 3.0 for Windows 95, VoiceType for OS/2 Warp, VoiceType Dictation 1.32 for Windows 3.x and Windows 95, VoiceType Control 3.0 and VoiceType Development Toolkit. Now mobile users can have access to the Internet WorldWide Web from almost anywhere by connecting via radio or cellular technology -- without a wired connection -- by using IBM's ARTour Wireless Web Express software introduced at the COMDEX show here. Designed for corporations that use the Web model to distribute information or handle transactions with suppliers, employees or customers, ARTour Web Express is ideal for the retail, insurance, transportation, financial services, mortgage lending and other industries. Typical applications might involve a retailer that uses a web browser as an interface to a wireless computing solution to update its inventory system or a mortgage lender whose field sales force accesses its corporate Intranet for the latest information on terms and rates for its offerings. "We see more and more of our customers accessing their critical information through either the WorldWide Web or corporate Intranets," said Don Haile, general manager of IBM's Networking Software division. "Now wireless users can share in the pool of information that exists in their corporate networks and on the web." ARTour Web Express works with leading web browsers. The software uses IBM ARTour (Advanced Radio Communications on Tour) to provide wireless access to information stored on enterprise servers. "Corporate Intranets and wireless technologies have previously evolved separately," noted Julie Joyce, manager for IBM mobile communications products. "With this software, we're bringing those worlds together to help make the mobile user more productive with better access to information." ARTour Web Express works most effectively when the same web pages are accessed frequently or the web browser is used to process forms, such as database updates. This is because the software uses patented IBM technology that extends web browser caching and employs compression techniques resulting in faster response times and less data being sent over the wireless connection. "One of the challenges of wireless communications is keeping traffic to a minimum to keep costs down and improve response time," said Julie Joyce. "Early testing shows we can reduce the amount of data transferred as much as 90 percent compared to today's web access software. This amounts to a significant reduction in cost and quicker response time when accessing corporate data via web technology." "The Internet is all about making communication, collaboration and access to information fast and easy," said John Patrick, vice president of technology, IBM Internet division. "The fact that you can now reach the Internet untethered, delivers on the ultimate value proposition of fast, easy access." About ARTour Software ARTour Web Express is the newest member of IBM's ARTour product family. ARTour has both client and server software to use as a foundation for enabling wireless computing. Other software in the product lineup includes: - ARTour Mobile, client software operating on an OS/2* or Microsoft Windows**-based portable computer equipped with a packet radio network modem, communicates through a wireless service provider to a customer's home office computer network based on the open TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) standard. - ARTour Gateway operates on an IBM RISC System/6000* which is connected to both the home office computer network and the wireless service provider, linking customer applications to the mobile communications system. In addition, the ARTour family offers two optional applications for enabling client/server applications over wireless networks. They are: - ARTour Emulator Express Client, which emulates the actions of an AS/400* or System/390* terminal, filters out unnecessary transmission data and only moves new or updated information over the radio network. - ARTour Emulator Express Server offers connection to the many corporate networks using IBM's secure and powerful Systems Network Architecture (SNA), allowing access to applications such as those based on IBM's CICS (Customer Information and Control System) or IMS (Information Management System). ARTour supports ARDIS DataTac** and RAM Mobile Data Mobitex** and cellular phone connections. Availability The ARTour Gateway and Emulator Express products are available now. IBM will beta test the ARTour Web Express product beginning June 24. Companies interested in serving as beta-testers for ARTour Web Express can receive more information by calling 1-800-735-7638 or via e-mail at ARTourHelp@vnet.ibm.com. IBM today announced at Spring Comdex that it is accepting candidates to participate in a broad beta test program beginning mid-June for a symmetric-multiprocessing (SMP) -enablement feature for OS/2* Warp Server. The SMP feature, which has undergone alpha testing since the launch of OS/2 Warp Server in late February, will be distributed to more than 1,500 beta testers worldwide. "As customers roll out PC-based SMP solutions, this feature will add excellent SMP performance to what many customers believe is already the most complete PC server operating system available today," said Art Olbert, vice president of server products, IBM Personal Software Products. "In building Warp Server SMP, we have drawn on IBM's extensive experience in the development of multiprocessor software technology. We were the first company to deliver SMP support in a true PC system with OS/2 2.11, and we expect to dramatically improve upon that offering with the delivery of the OS/2 Warp Server SMP feature." Impressive Performance The OS/2 Warp Server SMP feature is optimized for two-way and four-way SMP systems, the dominate SMP platforms today, but will also support systems equipped with more than four processors. Internal testing has shown that OS/2 Warp Server SMP is currently 200 to 300 percent faster than OS/2 2.11 SMP and twice as fast as OS/2 Warp Server running on a uniprocessor. "SMP capability for Warp Server is a critical addition to an already feature-rich server operating system," said Bob Sakakeeny, an analyst at Aberdeen Group. "Early indications are that Warp Server SMP will offer the speed and scalability that a substantial number of businesses are now demanding for their application and database servers." Tests have shown that OS/2 Warp Server running on a uniprocessor is impressive on its own merit, outperforming SMP versions of both Windows NT Server and Novell NetWare 4.1 in a PC Week Labs comparison of file and print services conducted with the Ziff-Davis Benchmark Operation's NetBench 4.01. Industry Support Prior to the release of the OS/2 Warp Server SMP beta, IBM worked with about a dozen business partners that have voiced support for the OS/2 Warp Server SMP feature with their products. These companies include Unisys Corp., Compaq Computer Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co., Oracle Corp., Sybase Inc., Btrieve Technologies Inc. and Lotus Development Corp. "We are seeing an increased amount of interest in SMP among our customers lately as well as a growing demand for OS/2 Warp Server," said Jagdish Pamnani, Oracle senior product line manager. "We have been working with IBM to optimize OS/2 Warp Server SMP for Oracle, and we are excited about delivering our product on this platform." "Because Unisys and IBM typically sell to the same set of customers, we believe that together, we can deliver a reliable, high-performance platform to the growing number of businesses requiring powerful SMP solutions," said Frank Brandenberg, group vice president and general manager, Unisys Personal Computer Division. "OS/2 Warp Server SMP will be a preload option on our recently announced Aquanta PC servers, each of which are equipped with multiple processors." "SMP support for Warp Server is something we are really looking forward to because it will allow us to manage our network much more efficiently," said Ray Pratts, senior technical analyst at Variable Annuity Life Insurance Co. in Houston. "Not only will it reduce my workload, but the end users at my company will also benefit from the increased processing power that SMP provides." The OS/2 Warp Server SMP feature is also being optimized to support each of the seven IBM Software Servers: Lotus Notes*, IBM Internet Connection Server, IBM Database Server, IBM Communications Server, IBM Directory & Security Server, IBM Systems Management Server and IBM Transaction Server. Availability The OS/2 Warp Server SMP beta will be released next week, with general availability planned for the third quarter of this year. IBM today announced a worldwide channel promotion, beginning mid-June, that will offer savings of up to $1000 plus on the combination of IBM's OS/2* Warp Server Version 4 and Lotus Development Corporation's Lotus Notes Release 4.1**, with Warp Server access licenses, the IBM Internet Connection Server for OS/2, and Lotus Notes Desktop Licenses. IBM today also released OS/2 Warp Server performance results from extensive testing with NotesBench***, Lotus' benchmarking tool which provides a methodology and tools for measuring Notes server performance. The results establish Warp Server, running on a single processor, as a superior platform for Lotus Notes Release 4.1. The promotion pairs the two products to offer customers tremendous savings on an exceptional platform for the world's leading messaging and groupware product. "We are very pleased with the NotesBench performance results on Warp Server. We believe Warp Server will further establish OS/2's strength as an outstanding platform for Lotus Notes," said James Koerner, worldwide brand manager server products, IBM Personal Software Products division. "We anticipate that this promotion will continue the momentum that Warp Server has quickly received in the marketplace." OS/2 Warp Server Single Processor Proves Superior As Notes Platform The results of the NotesBench Certification test show that OS/2 Warp Server, running on a single processor, has the ability to support 1,000 active clients using the Mail Workload scenario in NotesBench. The benchmark test ran for more than nine hours during which time Warp Server performed and executed flawlessly with Lotus Notes Release 4.1, demonstrating its stability under the load of 1,000 active Mail users. The average response time during the nine hour test period was 1.288 seconds. Lotus Notes Release 4.1, running on OS/2 Warp, provides substantial performance improvements, especially with OS/2 Warp Server Advanced, which contains numerous additional supporting features such as High-performance multitasking kernel, HPFS386 file system, and System performance and tuning assistance. The NotesBench test implementation, methodology and performance results were certified by the independent auditing firm KMDS Technical Associates, Inc. The Lotus NoteBench test results are not surprising, considering the results of a recent independent test conducted by PC Week Labs. The test showed that OS/2 Warp Server running on a single processor outperforms both Microsoft Windows NT Server and Novell Netware 4.1 running on four-way SMP- (symmetric- multiprocessing) equipped servers. According to the tests, OS/2 Warp Server had a peak performance of 56M bps (mega-bits per second), outperforming Windows NT Server by up to 26 percent in file and print services. Windows NT Server performed at a maximum of 44 M bps, while Netware 4.1 placed last. The testing was conducted with Ziff-Davis Benchmark Operation's newly released NetBench 4.01, with file and print services running on a 100M bps Fast Ethernet network. The OS/2 Warp Server SMP Feature IBM also announced today that it is accepting candidates to participate in an open beta test program beginning mid-June for a symmetric-multiprocessing (SMP) -enablement feature for OS/2 Warp Server. The SMP feature, which has undergone alpha testing since the launch of OS/2 Warp Server in late February, will be distributed to more than 1,500 beta testers worldwide. The OS/2 Warp Server SMP feature is expected to substantially improve upon the already outstanding performance of Warp Server. Internal testing has shown that OS/2 Warp Server SMP is currently 200 to 300 percent faster than OS/2 2.11 SMP and twice as fast as the uniprocessor version of OS/2 Warp Server. General availability is expected in the third quarter of 1996. Channel Promotions Support the Superior Platform Combination To help customers harness the powerful combination of Warp Server and Lotus Notes, IBM is offering reseller incentives and channel promotions to allow customers to save money. A device driver CD-ROM, OpenGL APIs and TrueType font support are among the additions that will make Merlin compatible with emerging and established technology standards, thereby broadening the solutions available to customers and protecting their current technology investments. "We will be making great strides across software and hardware development fronts with Merlin in order to expand OS/2's reach," said Wally Casey, vice president of client product management in IBM's Software Group at Comdex here today. "Combined with speech recognition, integrated Java capability and a multitude of network improvements, we believe Merlin will represent a significant advancement for OS/2." "Corporations must be able to exchange information efficiently among heterogeneous systems," said Alina Pozark, analyst at the Yankee Group. "IBM's next version of OS/2 will facilitate this process with support for cross-platform applications and industry standards, like OpenGL." Software Compatibility: TrueType, OpenGL, OpenDoc and Open32 IBM has added several features to Merlin that will allow it to run leading-edge software designed for multiple operating system platforms. For instance, Merlin will support the widely-used OpenGL API. OpenGL is a high-quality, portable graphics API from Silicon Graphics Computer Systems that allows for development of complex three-dimensional applications in technical and commercial areas like industrial design, computer-aided design, manufacturing, petroleum and chemical engineering, scientific visualization and entertainment. OpenGL support in Merlin will allow applications built with this API to be developed on OS/2. Licensed by such vendors as AT&T, Cirrus Logic, Digital Equipment, Hitachi, Microsoft and Sony, OpenGL has become the industry standard for building high-quality applications in the fields of engineering, architecture and entertainment. Merlin also will come with support for fonts that were built using the TrueType font specification. This means that when Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 users exchange documents with OS/2 users, the font used in the original Windows document will appear the same on the screen of the OS/2 user. The forthcoming release of Lotus Word Pro for OS/2 will support TrueType fonts, as well. "Our company is in the process of migrating all of our applications from Windows to OS/2 because we believe that OS/2 is the most stable operating system," said William Teags, systems analyst with Advanced Package Engineering in Phoenix, Ariz. "The ability to use TrueType fonts will help our migration because several of our employees have been using forms created with TrueType fonts, which have been hard to replicate in OS/2." TrueType support in Merlin also will allow OS/2 users to print to any printer without font substitution occurring at the printer. The printed document will retain the same typeface, style and color that the user sees on the screen. In addition to OpenGL and TrueType support, Merlin will come with OpenDoc** runtime support, giving end users the ability to run next-generation, object-oriented, component applications based on industry standards. OpenDoc is a robust architecture for creating component software that can be shared and customized across heterogeneous environments. More than 3,000 software developers have downloaded the OpenDoc developers toolkit for OS/2 since its release in February. Merlin also will integrate IBM's Developer API Extensions for OS/2 Warp, now known as Open32. Open32, introduced in May of 1995, consists of more than 800 of the most commonly-used Win32 APIs and the 300 most common Win32 messages. They enable software developers to write applications using common source code for OS/2 Warp and Win32 platforms, simplifying the port of existing Windows, Windows 95 and Windows NT applications to the OS/2 Warp environment. This way, developers can develop for both the OS/2 and Windows environment at once, rather than conduct a separate development effort for each environment. With OpenDoc runtime support and Open32 built into OS/2 Warp, software developers that build applications using these techniques will gain a ready installed base and open new business opportunities for their companies. To date, IBM has sold more than 13 million copies of OS/2. Hardware Compatibility: Device Driver CD-ROM, GRADD and Enhanced Resource Management Merlin users will have easy access to device drivers that support thousands of OS/2 devices through a CD-ROM that will come bundled with the product. Once installed, the CD-ROM immediately will take the user to a directory of OS/2 device drivers using a World Wide Web browser, which will provide the most current information about each one, including how to install it. The directory also will tell users where to find the device drivers and then will provide a vehicle to obtain them. In some cases, users will be able to hot link to a vendors' Internet home page to download the device driver. In other cases, they will be able to download the driver directly from the CD-ROM. This gives OS/2 users a single location to obtain virtually any driver they need and eliminates the need to search for drivers on electronic bulletin boards and home pages. "When I set up an OS/2 machine, the last thing I want to worry about is whether or not I will find a particular device driver, much less whether or not the driver will install," said Josh Airall, systems analyst at Cincinnati Bell Information Systems. "With the device driver CD-ROM that comes with Merlin and the ability to distribute drivers over a network using OS/2 Warp Server, I will be able to find the drivers I need and then install them on multiple machines at once." An enhanced resource manager in Merlin will ease the installation process for users and ensure that their hardware devices, like printers and sound cards, have the resources they need in order to operate. For new Plug-N-Play devices, the resource manager will detect the device, determine how much memory and other resources it needs, and then allocate the proper resources to it. In keeping with IBM's commitment to protect customers' investments, the resource manager also will detect older devices supported in Merlin and reserve the appropriate resources for them. In addition, the number of graphics device drivers available for OS/2 will increase after the release of Merlin because the operating system will support a new graphics device driver architecture, known as Graphics Adapter Device Driver (GRADD). With GRADD built into Merlin, hardware developers will have the basic foundation they need to create graphics device drivers, which significantly reduces the amount of code they need to write and eases their development efforts. More about Merlin... Merlin, the code name for the next client version of OS/2 Warp, is currently under development and expected to be generally available in the second half of 1996. Integrating IBM's latest VoiceType* technology in speech navigation and dictation, Merlin will be the first major Intel-based operating system with built-in speech recognition, taking the concept of ease-of-use to an entirely new level. It also will be the first desktop operating system to integrate Sun Microsystems, Inc.'s Java programming language. In addition to its broad industry compatibility, Merlin will provide customers with unmatched connectivity features, improved systems management, easier-than-ever Internet access and an improved user interface that shows off an enhanced version of the Lotus SmartCenter. * OS/2 and VoiceType are trademarks or registered trademarks of IBM Corporation. **OpenDoc is a trademark of Apple Computer Corporation.
