These software products will assist customers who are implementing distributed client/server environments across their enterprise by providing greater interoperability between AIX-based systems and existing PCs and mainframes. AIX Version 4 Update -------------------- The software announcements include an update to AIX Version 4, IBM's powerful UNIX operating system, to support a variety of new hardware. AIX Version 4 performance has been optimized to deliver impressive scalability for customers upgrading from existing 4-way symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) systems to new 6-way and 8-way SMP models. Other new and updated products enhance customers' ability to manage distributed systems, develop client/server applications, ensure system availability for their users, and integrate new systems with their existing PC LAN and mainframe environments. Protecting Investments in Current Applications ---------------------------------------------- Most importantly, customers can take advantage of these new capabilities while protecting their current application investments. Today's announcements include products that enable RS/6000 customers to access not only the thousands of available AIX applications, but also a number of existing mainframe graphics applications and many of the most popular products for the Microsoft Windows environment. "These improvements provide our customers with valuable tools for integrating UNIX, PC and mainframe applications using the RS/6000 as the central platform," said Donna Van Fleet, vice president, AIX systems development, IBM RISC System/6000 Division. "AIX Version 4 is a truly scalable operating system that provides users with a single technology that spans a wide range of hardware, from laptops and low-end desktops to our Scalable POWERparallel systems." Cutting-Edge Software Technology -------------------------------- This comprehensive announcement reinforces IBM's position as the industry's leading provider of distributed client/server solutions. With AIX, users can take advantage of an operating system that supports cutting-edge software technology, from Taligent's CommonPoint object frameworks, to the Open Software Foundation's Distributed Computing Environment (DCE), to multimedia and the Internet. Continuing the commitment to provide customers distributed computing solutions based on established standards, many of the products announced today deliver elements of IBM's Open Blueprint model for distributed client/server systems. AIX Version 4 Offers Customers More Flexibility ----------------------------------------------- With the extended scalability of AIX Version 4, customers can choose from an array of new PowerPC-based systems. These include desktop, entry-level server, 6-way and 8-way symmetric multiprocessor systems, and ThinkPad Power Series models. The RS/6000 Scalable POWERparallel (SP) systems are now also available with AIX Version 4. RS/6000 SP customers can obtain all the benefits of AIX 4, such as easier installation and systems management, very large file systems, kernel threads, and broader national language support. Customers can reduce labor costs by managing a single AIX environment across their desktops, servers and SP systems. AIX Version 4 also incorporates an advanced user interface that is based on the full Common Desktop Environment (CDE) specification, helping customers ensure consistency across the mix of UNIX operating systems in their enterprise. AIX Version 4 also now integrates the industry-standard DCE Base Messages and Client Services to assist customers in their migration to a client/server environment. Yet, with all these enhancements, AIX Version 4 actually offers reduced server software costs for many customers, since the Entry Server package 1-2 user license has been replaced by a 1-16 user license. This offers significant savings over the unlimited user license for systems with 3 to 16 users. Tools for Customers Managing Distributed Systems ------------------------------------------------ CICS System Manager Version 1.1 is a new product that uses object-oriented technology to let customers define, manage, and control many CICS for AIX systems from a single point. An integral part of the recently-announced SystemView family for AIX, this product allows customers to work with their distributed CICS systems as though they were a single system, requiring less time, expertise, and expense. The Distributed System Management Interface Tool (DSMIT), which can greatly simplify the management of dispersed systems and extend the span of control of administrative resources, has been enhanced with numerous security features to preserve system integrity. DSMIT supports both AIX Version 3.2.5 and Version 4 clients, as well as HP-UX 9.0, SunOS 4.1.3, and Sun Solaris 2.3 client systems. The new IBM Printing System Manager (PSM) FOR AIX, Version 1.1, and the new IBM Printing System Manager Graphical User Interface for AIX, Version 1.1, together offer customers the ability to centrally manage heterogeneous printing environments through an easy-to-use graphical user interface. System administrators can remotely configure and monitor printers, print servers, print queues, and print jobs in the network. PSM gives AIX, OS/2, and Windows end users the ability to manage printers from a remote site, get information about printers on the network and route their jobs to specific printers. PSM uses DCE services to authorize user printer access and authenticate each print request, while providing network support for distributed printing. IBM Print Services Facility (PSF) FOR AIX, Version 2.1, provides customers high-speed, high-quality production printing services, and now includes support for SAP R/3, a popular suite of workstation-based applications that, until now, has lacked production print capabilities. Many of IBM's mainstream systems management products are now also available on the RS/6000 SP, including NetView/6000, Systems Monitor, Trouble Ticket, Print Services Facility, and Performance Toolbox. These allow the SP to be managed like other servers on the network rather than as a standalone system, making it easy to integrate the SP into any computing environment. Advanced Tools / Services for Distributed Applications ------------------------------------------------------ DCE for AIX 2.1 is the first DCE product available in the industry based on the rich, extended functions of OSF DCE 1.1 source code. DCE provides AIX Version 4 customers with an integrated approach to security, naming, inter-process communication, and resource management in a multi-vendor, distributed environment. New features include: ease of administration, with consolidated DCE commands and unified DCE processes; better serviceability, with standardized error handling and extended instrumentation; and enhanced security and manageability. CICS for AIX, Version 2.1, provides customers high-performance transaction processing capabilities using AIX Version 4 on any of the PowerPC-based, uniprocessor, SMP, or SP RS/6000 systems. It allows CICS for AIX applications to access a wide range of data resources, such as CICS data held in Encina files, DB2 databases, non-IBM databases, and existing CICS data on host-based systems. With Version 2.1, CICS for AIX now includes the CICS Client for AIX and the Encina products which were formerly ordered separately. CICS for AIX is a key transaction-processing element within the Application Services layer of the IBM Open Blueprint model for distributed client/server computing. Similarly, IBM Encina for AIX, Version 2.1, provides customers another choice in high-performance transaction-processing capabilities using AIX Version 4 on any of the PowerPC-based, uniprocessor, SMP, or SP RS/6000 systems. This latest release runs on IBM's newest DCE Version 2.1, and includes consolidated packaging to simplify ordering and deployment. The Encina family of products provides end-to-end transactional integrity in large-scale, distributed, client/server enterprises. As with CICS for AIX, Encina for AIX is a transaction-processing element within the IBM Open Blueprint model. Version 3.1.3 of IBM C Set ++ for AIX and IBM C for AIX exploit the PowerPC 604 microprocessor instruction set and optimize the ordering of instructions to deliver performance on this processor. The xldb debugger also has enhancements to assist in the development of applications that exploit the threaded architecture of AIX Version 4, used to support RS/6000 SMP systems. Earlier, IBM introduced CommonPoint Application System for AIX and CommonPoint Application Development Toolkit for AIX, the first commercialized products based on the CommonPoint object-oriented application development environment from Taligent, Inc. CommonPoint provides over 100 highly functional and integrated application frameworks that can be used by experienced C++ developers to speed application development. The new Internet Connection Server for AIX, Version 1.0, is a natural complement to the RS/6000 server systems, providing customers all the necessary features to establish their own World Wide Web pages on the Internet. Customers can use their RS/6000 systems to exploit the Internet as an internal communications vehicle or to promote their products, services, or messages to the world. IBM Ultimedia Services for AIX, Version 2.1.2, brings advanced technology to users and developers of multimedia applications to enhance their ability to manipulate audio and video material. New capabilities include extensions for PCI-based audio and video devices used in the new low-end PowerPC systems, as well as other advanced video adapters from IBM and third-party suppliers. The new systems are expected to provide up to 300 percent more transaction processing power than current models. 64-Bit Processing of Current Applications ----------------------------------------- When moving to AS/400 Advanced Series with PowerPC AS microprocessors, customers will be able to take immediate advantage of 64-bit processing with their current applications, a capability unique to AS/400. As other hardware vendors move to 64-bit processing, customers and software developers will have to rewrite or recompile their applications. There are more than 25,000 AS/400 applications, including 3,000 designed for client/server. Current AS/400 Advanced Series systems can be easily upgraded to RISC technology at the customer's site, providing a growth path for customers who own or purchase current systems. The PowerPC AS microprocessors are the first 64-bit RISC microprocessors based on PowerPC technology available in an IBM system. New Release of AS/400 Operating System -------------------------------------- A new release of the easy-to-use, open AS/400 operating system provides support for: o Novell NetWare Loadable Modules. o Lotus Notes (in the near future). o Easier porting of UNIX commercial applications. o Connection to the Internet via World Wide Web browsers. o A graphical interface for easier system operation. o New object-oriented application development tools. o Planned parallel capabilities for the powerful, integrated DB2 for OS/400 database. o Multiple processors connected over high-speed, fiber-optic lines for unprecedented database access and processing power. Focus on Running Businesses, Not Computers ------------------------------------------ "Although we have changed the technology under the AS/400 covers many times, the value of what we bring customers does not change," said Bob E. Dies, general manager, AS/400 Division. "We designed AS/400 Advanced Series to uniquely integrate the components of computing systems for customers, so they don't have to do it themselves. Customers tell us they want to focus on running their businesses, not on running computers." PowerPC AS Microprocessors -------------------------- The new AS/400 Advanced System and AS/400 Advanced Server use 64-bit PowerPC AS microprocessors developed by IBM, based on the PowerPC technology developed by IBM, Apple, and Motorola. The PowerPC AS microprocessors are optimized for AS/400. They include the A10, a 77 megahertz (MHz), three-way, superscalar microprocessor and the A30, a 154 MHz, four-way, superscalar microprocessor used in high-end models. With the PowerPC AS microprocessors, performance of the AS/400 Advanced Server (models 40S, 50S and 53S) and AS/400 Advanced System (models 400, 500, 510 and 530) will be substantially increased over current comparable models. IBM intends to provide system performance improvements for the Model 53S of up to 300 percent over the most powerful non-RISC AS/400 Advanced Server, the Model 30S. IBM intends to improve system performance of the Model 530, with its 4-way processor, by at least 50 percent over the non-RISC Model 320 4-way. Actual performance data for Model 53S and Model 530 will be available in October. Each system has from one to four processor options. High-end processor options (models 53S and 530) include symmetric multiprocessing capabilities for either two-way or four-way multiprocessors. The new systems support up to four times as much main memory, twice as much disk storage, and more than twice as many communication lines as current systems. A new high-end AS/400 Advanced System can support almost 50 percent more attached workstations -- up to 7,000. AS/400 Advanced Server can support up to 16 local area networks each with hundreds of clients. A new "OptiConnect" feature supports high-speed connection of nearby AS/400 systems through fiber-optic cable, providing unprecedented AS/400 processing and database capacity. OptiConnect can support up to 32 processors sharing databases. AS/400 Operating System ----------------------- A new release of the operating system, Operating System/400 Version 3 Release 6 (OS/400 V3R6), supports full 64-bit processing, and provides increased openness, connectivity, and ease of use, while preserving customer investments in applications, education, and networks. IBM also announced that virtually all the new functions in V3R6 are also available in Version 3 Release 1, which runs on earlier AS/400 systems. The new release of the operating system supports Novell NetWare on the powerful File Server Input/Output Processor (FSIOP) as well as Ethernet and Token Ring local area networks. IBM intends to enhance the integration of NetWare on the system to include the Integrated File System, NetWare Loadable Modules, IPX/SPX (Internet Package Exchange / Sequenced Package Exchange) communications, and broad printer support. IBM also said it intends to provide support for installation of the widely popular Lotus Notes on AS/400 Advanced Series, so customers with client/server operations can store a Notes document database on the AS/400 Advanced Server. Many New Operating System Features ---------------------------------- Integrating PC server functions into AS/400 Advanced Series via the FSIOP, a 486-based board, allows customers to: o Eliminate the cost of separate PC servers, as well as their high support costs. o Use AS/400 backup, security, DASD, and remote management capabilities. The operating system now supports additional Single UNIX Specification (SPEC 1170) application program interfaces (APIs) for commercial applications. Applications developed with these APIs can be easily ported to AS/400 Advanced Series from UNIX operating systems supporting these same Single UNIX Specification APIs. Using the new Graphical Access for OS/400 software, PC clients can now display OS/400 information in a more graphical, intuitive manner from both AS/400 applications and point-and-click, mouse-based environments such as OS/2 and Windows. The powerful, integrated DB2 for OS/400 relational database has been enhanced, and the system now supports development of drivers that will allow SQL queries to other popular databases such as Oracle and Sybase. IBM also plans parallel access capabilities for DB2 for OS/400, providing dramatic performance improvements and greatly increased storage capacity. The capabilities will be introduced first using symmetric multiprocessing for AS/400 Advanced Series with N-way processors, and then for multiple, connected AS/400 systems so they can function as one database. A new WebConnection links AS/400 to Internet's World Wide Web to provide images, audio, movies, and other data to potential customers. IBM also is making custom services available to help customers set up a Home Page connection. New system facilities and programs support the use of advanced, object-oriented programming on PCs linked to AS/400 Advanced Series, and a new "VisualAge" program gives developers the ability to write programs visually in the powerful C++ programming language as well as in Smalltalk. Applications ------------ Business Partners and software vendors are rapidly expanding the portfolio of AS/400 applications -- by far the largest of any multi-user business system. Business Partners have translated hundreds of applications and thousands of programs to take advantage of 64-bit PowerPC AS systems. Software 2000, for instance, translated two of its applications consisting of more than 1,500 programs during a two-day session at the AS/400 Partners in Development laboratory at Rochester, Minn. -- one of 14 centers around the world where solution providers can test their applications on RISC. More than two dozen major software vendors, including Computer Associates International, Information Management Company, Software AG, Powersoft Corp., Seer Technologies Inc., TopSpeed Corp., and Information Builders, Inc., have ported current, popular UNIX and PC LAN applications to AS/400. Recently, IBM published a new edition of the AS/400 Application Catalog, listing more than 3,000 client/server applications. Consultant View --------------- Consultant D. H. Brown Associates, Inc., said in February following a study of the AS/400 operating system, "When compared to its principal UNIX competitors, OS/400 V3.1 was the leading product in both the features/function and the overall commercial server ranking. ... OS/400 V3.1 leads in 7 of 11 different functional categories reviewed." AS/400 Advanced Server ---------------------- AS/400 Advanced Server belongs to IBM's family of four server platforms: PC Server, AS/400, RS/6000, and System/390. These servers are being transformed to work with each other and with the systems of other vendors through adherence to de facto and industry standards, as described in IBM's Open Blueprint. They also reflect IBM's drive to maximize the use of common technology, subsystems, and software across its platforms. At the same time, the four server platforms retain and build on the individual strengths that have made each of them winners in the marketplace. Those strengths address the different styles of computing that IBM customers have said they prefer, which can be summarized as: affordability (PC Server), simplicity (AS/400), scalable UNIX performance (RS/6000), and large-scale robustness (S/390). As a result, IBM offers what no other company in the industry can offer: servers designed to address every customer need, regardless of where the customer is on the road to open client/server computing. Most Popular Multi-User Computing System ---------------------------------------- AS/400 has become the world's most popular, multi-user business computing system, with more than 300,000 systems supporting businesses around the world. In the United States, 97 percent of the Fortune 100 Industrials use AS/400s. Availability and Price ---------------------- AS/400 Advanced Series (models 400, 500, 510, 40S and 50S) will be available starting in September, with volume shipments in the fourth quarter. High-end AS/400 Advanced Series (models 530 and 53S) will be available starting in November, with volume shipments in the first quarter of 1996. Prices range from 9,000 USD for the entry-level Model 400 to 195,000 USD for the Model 510 with its most powerful processor. Bob Frankenberg, CEO and President of Novell, Inc.; Michael Spindler, CEO and President of Apple Computer, Inc.; and John M. Thompson, Senior Vice President and Group Executive, IBM Corporation, spoke during a special event, outlining their common vision of the benefits of the OpenDoc component software technology. Components will Simplify ------------------------ The executives explained how components will simplify today's multi-platform computing environment, and how OpenDoc will permit end users, corporate IS, and software developers to make software work together on the desktop and across the enterprise. 25 New Members of CI Labs ------------------------- During the presentation, hosted by Richard Hart of c/net, the executives welcomed the 25 new members of Component Integration Laboratories, Inc. (CI Labs), the industry association promoting component software. They encouraged attendees to visit PC Expo's OpenDoc Pavilion, a showcase of OpenDoc software featuring products ranging from desktop publishing to groupware. Special Address Highlights OpenDoc's Benefits --------------------------------------------- Jerry Michalski, managing editor of Release 1.0, notes: "Developers, end-users, and corporate IS are all beginning to realize the benefits of OpenDoc -- transparent integration within existing systems and diversity without complexity." Richard Hart also emphasized the importance of a component software architecture standard that meets the needs of different people, different departments, and different enterprises. He remarked that "users must have the choice of easily accessing the growing resources around them." OpenDoc Simplifies Software --------------------------- In its capacity as a vendor-neutral industry association, CI Labs focuses its efforts solely on the OpenDoc technology. Through integration, collaboration, and customization, OpenDoc provides a new model for software interoperability by enabling the creation of distributed, cross-platform components. Sponsors and members at all levels are united in the belief that an open industry standard for component software is vital to future software innovation. CI Labs introduced new membership levels in April, and is announcing 25 new members here at PC Expo. Pavilion of OpenDoc Software ---------------------------- The event heralded the opening of the OpenDoc Pavilion, where software vendors are demonstrating OpenDoc components across a variety of platforms. "In order for the evolving component marketplace to be successful, an open, non-proprietary standard must exist," said Dave Pollak, president of Athena Design, Inc. "OpenDoc is the only true component software architecture capable of meeting the demands of a competitive market. We are very excited to support and influence OpenDoc development through our membership in CI Labs." The pavilion was composed of multi-platform developers representative of hundreds of companies that are working with the OpenDoc software development toolkits on Windows, OS/2 Warp, and Mac OS. ======================================================================== +------------------------------------------------------------+ | IBM Simplifies Software Discounts and Licensing Worldwide, | advsf | Offers Customers and Remarketers Global Terms | +------------------------------------------------------------+ IBM announces the IBM Software Advantage, which provides new and simpler software discounts and licenses to make it easier for customers and remarketers to acquire IBM's workstation software. Simplified Agreements; Discounts Based on Worldwide Spending ------------------------------------------------------------ The initiative enhances discounts based on customers' worldwide software spending and establishes a standard worldwide agreement for workstation software remarketers and distributors. John M. Thompson, IBM Senior Vice President and Group Executive, said, "Customers and remarketers have told us that they want simplified software licensing agreements and discount structures. The IBM Software Advantage makes it easier to obtain workstation software from IBM." Worldwide Contract, Common International Discounts -------------------------------------------------- Customers of all sizes who intend to acquire IBM workstation software in large quantities will find the IBM Software Advantage for Workstations attractive because it features a simple 24-month worldwide contract with common international discounts. This worldwide, aggregated, spending-based model is a dramatic shift from the license-based model that has been in effect. The Software Advantage for Workstations offers customers greater discounts according to their level of future spending. An attractive discount is available to customers who forecast future software acquisitions, and an even greater discount is available to customers who commit to future software acquisitions. Each offering comes with the option of upgrade protection to help customers maintain version and releases as current. These changes, made in response to customer needs, give customers budget predictability and flexibility in licensing software. Single Contract for All Countries --------------------------------- In addition, the IBM Software Advantage offers software remarketers and distributors global agreements that allows them to sign a single contract, with a single set of terms and conditions for licensing IBM software in all eligible countries. This new agreement helps remarketers eliminate country-by-country agreements, each with different terms and conditions. The new agreements also enable small resellers and independent firms to remarket IBM software by signing contracts with large distributors or remarketers. This will allow customers to acquire software from their favorite local resellers, and will enable consulting firms to remarket IBM software while maintaining a third-party relationship. Included in the IBM Software Advantage is a single worldwide customer software license agreement for workstation software. The license is transferable to other customers within a business enterprise, enabling customers to adjust to business needs. The license is applicable in any country worldwide. As part of today's announcement, IBM is introducing suggested retail prices for workstation software. These prices are closer to "street price" than the list prices formerly used by IBM. Prices Related to Product Use ----------------------------- With this announcement, IBM offers a single, cross-platform, worldwide approach relating software prices to a customer's product use. Use can be measured in four ways: user-based, which allows customers to pay according to the number of registered or concurrent people using the software; and resource-based, which allows customers to pay according to amounts of registered or concurrent resources being used, such as processors, storage, or nodes. This consolidates all IBM software pricing into one of just four use-based categories: registered users or concurrent users, registered resources, or concurrent resources. It is intended to make it much easier for customers to understand software charges and relate them to a product's function. Tools for Managing Software License Use --------------------------------------- Also in response to customer demand, IBM today introduces tools enabling customers to manage their own software license use. These tools enable customers to try software before acquiring it and manage their software license charges, terms, and conditions. This announcement eliminates "use keys" for IBM-owned software such as OS/400. IBM is announcing a set of SystemView for OS/2 license-use management tools to help customers manage their software usage. To enable try-before-buy merchandising, IBM will employ access keys to unlock software that customers wish to acquire. The Answer to Complexity ------------------------ The IBM Software Advantage has been well received by customers and remarketers alike. "Managing terms and conditions and rules, as well as international prices and products that change so frequently, is incredibly difficult and adds overhead that the members of SHARE just can't afford. The simplicity and flexibility of IBM's Software Advantage program is the answer to the complexity in our world," said Anne Caluori, president of SHARE. "IBM has helped us get back to a business focus - and that's the most important part of this announcement." Easier to Work with IBM ----------------------- Buck Bohac, president of Indelible Blue, an IBM remarketer, commented, "I think the IBM Software Advantage announcement is very strategic for our customer base, giving them the ability to combine their purchases of all IBM products under a single discount structure. It makes it easier for customers to license software and easier for remarketers to work with IBM. It's going to bring us increased opportunities in the worldwide market." The new initiative covers PC and UNIX operating system-based software licensed through remarketers after 20 June 1995. It is part of an overall effort by IBM to improve software licensing. Related improvements are also being made to System/390 and OS/400 software. ======================================================================== +-----------------------------------------------------+ | Enhancements to OS/2 Platform Products Fix Strategy | stratfix +-----------------------------------------------------+ IBM announces changes and enhancements to its OS/2 Platform Products Fix Support Strategy, effective 1 September 1995. This new strategy satisfies many customer requirements and provides a more affordable service environment for the high-volume, low-priced OS/2 platform products. The new OS/2 Platform Fix Support Strategy is applicable worldwide, and applies to all future platform product releases (NS, PSP, and SWS) and their National Language Versions (NLV), including double-byte character set (DBCS) versions. Additionally, the new fix strategy is applicable to the following list of currently released products: o OS/2 Warp V3 o OS/2 Warp V3 with WIN-OS2 o OS/2 Warp Connect V3 o OS/2 Special Edition for Windows, V2.1 o OS/2 Special Edition for Windows, V2.11 o OS/2 LAN Server 3.0 o OS/2 LAN Server 4.0 o LAN Distance Connection Server - 8 Port o LAN Distance Connection Server - 32 Port o LAN Distance Remote Highlights of the new fix approach include: o Standard Fix Support o Custom Fix Support o Product Service Life "Currency" o National Language Version (NLV) Support o Enhanced Communications of Fix Availability and Contents o Common Product Install and Service Tools Defect problem reporting remains unchanged by this announcement and is consistent with the 1994 announcement of the IBM Personal Systems Support offerings and IBM's technical support strategy. Essentially, the new strategy states that for the service life of the product, customers may report suspected defects in IBM software code or documentation via fax, mail, or electronically (where applicable). IBM will respond using the same media as the inquiry, indicating if the defect is known or a fix is available. If the customer does not have entitled services as announced in their country, and the problem is not a known defect, then the customer will be informed that IBM will continue to work the suspected defect for a fee. If the problem is then determined to be caused by an error in IBM code or documentation, the fee will be waived. Customers will continue to have the capability to report suspected defects by severity level (1, 2, 3, 4). If customers have entitled services as announced in their country, these suspected defects will be worked at the customer-designated severity until the source is identified and validated to be code-related. Based on the nature of the defect, it will be scheduled to be fixed in the current product release or in a future product release. Customers will be advised of the defect resolution and the disposition of the fix. Customers will also be advised if the defect must be closed as a permanent programming restriction. A fix provided for the current release version, referred to as "Fix-in-Current", will be provided at the latest service level of the product via an option called Standard Fix Support. The following criteria are used to determine which defects are to be fixed in the current product release: o Data corruption o Regression of supported function, major application, or device-driver compatibility o Frequent trap or system hang o Serious visual problem o Significant portion of hardware or software environment is non-functional Defects not meeting these criteria are scheduled for a future release and are referred to as a 'Deferred Fix'. A fee-based option called Custom Fix Support is provided for customers who need greater control or selectivity over changes to their software environment. These two service options are designed to accommodate the requirements of a broad spectrum of customers for the service life of the products. Standard Fix Support -------------------- Standard Fix Support is designed to meet the needs of the majority of users. Standard Fix Support begins at general availability of platform products, and is designed to provide prompt identification and delivery of fixes. Standard Fix Support provides code updates packaged in FixPaks on a frequent basis. FixPaks will correspond to individual products or for complex products, FixPaks may correspond to product subsystems. The product subsystems are selected such that the resulting FixPaks are functionally independent and can be applied independent of each other for differing subsystems. By providing greater granularity in defining and delivering fixes, FixPaks help customers limit the amount of change introduced into their systems. FixPaks are cumulative, and supersede previous service on the product or subsystem for which the FixPak is delivered. FixPaks are validated for correctness of solution and product execution and performance, using appropriate testing approaches, before being made generally available. Testing will be performed as required at the module and integrated product level as well as in the customer's environment(s) where the problem was originally encountered. Customers who discovered or experienced and reported the problem are provided the fixes to test in their environment and ensure they have been fixed. After completion of fix validation with these customers, FixPaks are released for general availability via BBS, Internet, and diskette. FixPaks will be made available on a frequent and regular basis. Periodically, FixPaks for a product may be combined into a preventive maintenance FixPak. Preventive maintenance FixPaks provide customers with a convenient way to service their complete system, and may be used to refresh the product manufacturing line. This approach has the added benefit of keeping subsequent FixPaks small by maintaining separation between the subsystems, which results in less impact to customer environments if future service is necessary. Customers may be required to install the preventive maintenance FixPak in order to resolve a subsequent defect. Custom Fix Support ------------------ The Custom Fix Support option gives the customer the opportunity to have sole and total control of a code base. Customers can designate what and when fixes are applied, as well as the granularity of the fixes to the individual APAR fix level. Also, this option can be used by the customer to accelerate fixes for their environment that would not generally be available until a future release of the product. This option is not available for Communication Manager/2 (CM/2). Custom Fix Support fixes are tested by IBM against the specific product code configuration that IBM is maintaining for the customer. The Custom Fix Support option is available for a fee through the IBM Special Bid Process. A special bid can be obtained during a product's service life and after service life has expired on a product. A special bid is required for either type of Custom Fix Support option, and the price may be different based on the special bid requirements. Product Service Life (Currency) ------------------------------- Each product covered by this announcement will continue to have a service life date stated as part of the product announcement. The service life refers to the period of time program services (code-related defect support) are available. Customers have requested that IBM establish a standard length of time during which a product will be supported after a new release of the product becomes available. In response to that request, IBM is committed to providing a one-year period of overlap between a platform product and its successor. The overlap is provided for new release or version levels of the products. FixPak releases to the products do not extend or change the overlap period. After product service life ends, customers can extend service life of the platform products for their mission-critical applications via special bid. Platform products covered by this announcement will be supported for a total of five years. The five years are divided between the currency provided with the product and a fee-based period for customers who want to extend service life on their products via a special bid. Products which are not requested by special bid for a service life extension within six months from the end of their product-provided currency will be withdrawn from service at the end of the six-month period. Withdrawal from service for each product will be announced at least 90 days before the effective withdrawal date. Announcements will be made at the end of currency provided with the product and at the end of five years for any active service extensions on the product. For products that are within the six-month period following their product-provided currency, and for which a service extension special bid has not been initiated, an announcement will be made of the potential withdrawal of the service extension option on that product. National Language Version (NLV) Support --------------------------------------- National Language Versions are supported by this fix strategy, including Double-Byte Character Set (DBCS). Periodically, FixPaks containing "Fix-in-Current" fixes that need translation will be provided as required in the requested NLVs. NLV customers who purchase a Custom Fix Support special bid will be provided translated fixes for all requested custom fixes. Enhanced Communications of Fix Availability and Contents -------------------------------------------------------- Communications of fixes has been enhanced to identify the availability and contents of fixes via Internet and bulletin boards as well as putting the information in FixPaks. The enhanced communications provide a more comprehensive documentation of the FixPak contents, definition of the operational environment in which the problem(s) were experienced, and any restrictions that may apply to the fixes. An APAR cross-reference list will be provided with FixPaks, point releases, and preventive maintenance releases. The cross-reference list will contain APAR numbers, problem descriptions, statement of the environment impacted by the problems fixed, symptoms that were reported with the problem reports, the code level on which the fixes were tested, and (if applicable) configurations where FixPaks should not be applied. Common Product Install and Service Tools ---------------------------------------- Currently the OS/2 platform products use different and unique product install tools, as well as different service installation tools. The diversity of tools and techniques has challenged trainers and systems administrators. IBM is currently working toward the goal of enhanced install and service tools that are common across the software products. These tools will be designed to provide enhanced systems management of the product installation and product maintenance on customer systems. IBM is actively involved customers in the gathering of requirements for these enhanced tools. Summary ------- The changes and enhancements to the OS/2 Platform Fix Support Strategy have been designed to provide a clear and consistent set of maintenance policies and practices across the OS/2 platform. This strategy will provide customers with improved fix quality and greater system stability through smaller FixPaks that have been more stringently tested. Additionally, customers are given greater control of their software operating environment via the fee based Custom Fix Support option. A preventive maintenance capability is provided through the preventive maintenance FixPak. This new fix service approach has been reviewed with numerous customer focus groups and validated to address many of the service requirements in their diverse environments. The new OS/2 Platform Fix Support Strategy will provide: o A consistent fix strategy across the OS/2 platform o A standard fix support option provided with product license as part of product program services o Responsive and stable fix support across the platform products o Fix methodology and approach which consistently produces high-quality FixPaks across the platform products o Offerings that expand customer fix support options o Opportunity for customers to have their unique service requirements addressed o APAR reference and FixPak information posted on BBS and Internet Questions and Answers --------------------- Q 1: Does this new strategy apply to all IBM software? How does this change in the software fix support strategy affect my contract? A 6: The new platform fix strategy does not change the support provided by your support contract. The Support Line offerings provide customers with a way to report problems by voice, via phone, and to be able to work with support analysts through the problem identification process. The problem reporting methods remain unchanged by this announcement. Q 7: In 1994, IBM announced a change in Technical Support Strategy and indicated that Program Services will be available for the product service life. Doesn't this represent a change to the May 1994 statement on program services? A 7: No. The 1994 announcement did not guarantee fixes for all problems reported or a time frame for problem resolution. The new fix strategy explicitly defines conditions for fix delivery and availability. In addition, the new software fix approach provides options for extending the service life of OS/2 platform software products and control of their code base. Q 8: How will IBM determine which defects are designated as 'Fix-in-Current' or 'Deferred'? A 8: IBM will employ a classification process that will determine if the defect falls into one of the following categories: Data corruption Regression of supported function, major application, or device-driver compatibility Frequent trap or system hang Serious visual problem Significant portion of hardware or software environment non-functional If the defect is classified in one of the categories above, the defect will be designated as 'Fix-in-Current'. A fix will be provided for the latest release level of specified applicable products free of charge. Fixes will be provided in FixPaks for each product at a predefined interval. Q 9: Can you provide classification example for a 'Deferred' fix? A 9: The OS/2 PSAT executive displays the Process and Process Parent identification numbers incorrectly. The information displayed is correct, but the data columns are reversed. System operations are not impacted by this problem, and the required user data is available. This problem fix is classified 'deferred' and will be considered for inclusion in a future release. Q10: What can my customer do if he or she doesn't agree with IBM's classification of a problem he or she has reported? A10: A formal process has been established in which all interested parties -- the customer, IBM client team/sales representative, as appropriate, and the platform product development group involved -- discuss the problem and agree on a solution, which may include reclassification. This process will be initiated by the IBM support center service representative on the customer's behalf. Q11: What if IBM decides not to fix a 'Deferred' defect? A11: The customer can request the defect be fixed via a special-bid contract for a Custom Fix Support option. Q12: Can a customer get a fix for a specific 'Deferred' fix defect? A12: Yes, the customer can request that a single fix be developed. The customer may have to enter the special bid process and sign a contract for a custom fix option for custom programming. Q13: Some platform products are subdivided into subsystems. How will FixPaks be developed for these products? A13: As an example, OS/2 LAN Server 4.0 has been divided into 13 subsystems that are logically independent. FixPaks can be developed and delivered for each subsystem independently. The subsystems are: LS 4.0 LAN Tuning Assistant (LS40TUNE) LS 4.0 Entry/Ring 3 Server (LS40ESRV) LS 4.0 HPFS386 Ring 0 Server (LS40HPFS) LS 4.0 User Profile Management (LS40UPM) LS 4.0 Peer Service (LS40PEER) LS 4.0 OS/2 Requester (LS40REQ) LS 4.0 OS/2 Graphical User Interface (LS40GUI) LS 4.0 OS/2 Remote IPL (LS40RIPL) LS 4.0 REXX Utility Applet (LS40REXX) LS 4.0 Fault Tolerance (LS40FT) LS 4.0 UPS Services (LS40UPS) LS 4.0 Replication Service (LS40REPL) LS 4.0 RIPL For Warp (LS40WRPL) Q14: Does the most current FixPak have to be installed on a product to get a reported defect resolved? A14: All defects reported on a product with remaining service life will be resolved as outlined in the announcement. You will not be required to install all FixPaks prior to our working with you to identify the problem source. It may be necessary to install a FixPak(s) in your environment to perform additional problem source identification. Fixes, if required, will be developed and released in a FixPak at the current product service level for the subsystem affected. In these situations, you may need to install the latest service level of the product and the new FixPak. If, however, you have purchased a Custom Fix Support special bid, you may purchase the individual problem fix for the affected product at the service level you designate. Q15: Do I have to install all available FixPaks? A15: No. Each FixPak is cumulative and supersedes the previous FixPak. Additionally, each FixPak contains all the cross-dependent modules within the affected subsystem(s). Hence, only the FixPak(s) that contains the solution(s) for your failing subsystem(s) need be applied. Q16: Can I get a fix at the service level of my system? A16: Yes. If your system is at the latest product service level, you will receive fixes as defined in Standard Fix Support. If your system is at a back level of service and you do not wish to update to the latest service level, or if the fix is categorized 'Deferred', you can obtain the individual fix by purchasing a Custom Fix Support option via IBM's Special Bid Process. Q17: Do I need anything in addition to a service extension special bid to extend the service life of an OS/2 platform product? A17: No. The service extension special bid includes all elements required for reporting suspected defects on the platform product(s) for which special bid(s) are executed. Suspected defects will be handled in accordance with the provisions of the Standard Fix Support option. Q18: What is the service life period (currency) for OS/2 platform products? A18: Standard Fix Support for the platform products starts when the product release becomes generally available (the GA date) and continues for a period called product service life (currency). Currency for OS/2 platform products will be stated in the product announcement. The currency stated will provide a one-year overlap between the product being announced and its predecessor being replaced. The service life of a product can be extended to a total of five years via the service extension special bid. The five years consist of the currency provided with the product plus the fee-based service extension special bid. Q19: When would a customer need a Custom Fix Support option versus the Standard Fix Support option for fix delivery? A19: The table below explains when a customer might need to request a Custom Fix Support option for fix delivery versus remaining with the Standard Fix Support option. Operational Software Standard Custom Characteristics (free) (fee) -------------------- -------- ------ Minimal change to software environment Suggested - Stable applications - Infrequent application of service Occasional change to software Suggested Suggested environment - Periodic application of service - Some 'Deferred' fixes needed Tight control of software environment Suggested - Mission-critical application development - Need fixes for all defects Q20: How will a customer be able to track the status of a "deferred" fix? A20: The APAR can be used to track the status of suspected defects that are categorized as "deferred". APAR status can be viewed or monitored via IBM's RETAIN database. Q21: If the custom build line feature of Custom Fix Support is not available for Communications Manager/2 (CM/2), how will a customer be able to get individual APAR fixes for CM/2? A21: CM/2 currently provides fixes to customers at the individual APAR level via electronic bulletin boards for all supported releases. Customers may download the fixes as needed and apply them individually without requiring the Custom Fix Support option. Openness gives the user more brand flexibility when selecting hardware and software. The migration to network-centric computing involves enabling different types and brands of computer hardware, networking hardware, and software to communicate with one another. This is typically not an easy thing to do unless the computer systems are open systems. When a computer system is said to be an open system, it means that the computer system's hardware and software conform to standards (programming interfaces, communications protocols, etc.) defined by independent standards bodies rather than by a proprietary set of standards not generally adhered to by other computer manufacturers. The open systems environment is designed to provide synergy between the computer systems made by different companies. While many computers that conform to open systems standards run some version of the UNIX operating system, open systems does not require UNIX! Any operating system that conforms to open-system standards can be a building block in an open-system computer. The open systems concept has come a long way toward bringing synergy between the computer systems made by different companies, and IBM is firmly committed to the open systems environment. Retailers would like to understand sales patterns to be able to predict what you will buy and when. Credit companies would like to be able to quickly detect fraud, while financial analysts would like to perform complex statistical queries to predict market behavior. With improvements in technology, such query-intensive analysis is within our reach, but it requires careful planning with a view to building an architecture for your business that will allow your transaction processing workloads to coexist with business analysis. The sessions making up the data warehouse and decision support track are designed to help you understand the technologies available to help you collect, manage, and enrich that data in your enterprise so it can be used efficiently for decision support. Discussions will range from end-user analysis tolls to systems management techniques that can simplify the warehousing operation. TLAG sessions: IBM's Open Development Tools for C/S Applications and Modeling Tools and Technologies Dr. Eric Bush, manager of market strategy, IBM VisualAge for IBM Smalltalk and C++ Steve Robinson, product manager for VisualAge and IBM Smalltalk, IBM The C/C++ Family Roger Pett, C Set ++ and VisualAge C++ service and support, IBM IBM's Open BASIC Technology Brian Starr, manager of OO solutions development, IBM IBM COBOL Goes Object-Oriented Carrier Woerner, manager of AD technical marketing, IBM PL/I Family Overview Ed Oddo, manager of PL/I solutions development, IBM Client/Server the Visual Way Cathy Owen, prototype application development, IBM Managing Your Application Development Environment on the LAN Debbie Jackson, TeamConnection planning and market management, IBM Piecing Together the AS/400 Application Development Puzzle Aaron Tobin, program manager in AS/400 AD market management, IBM Data Management and Enterprise Connectivity (DMEC) "Downsizing", "business re-engineering", "client/server". These are some of the buzzwords that have been used over the past few years to describe what we might otherwise call "network centric data management". The idea is to decentralize the data we're using to manage our businesses, moving it to platforms more accessible to those users who must work with it. For business professionals, this decentralization is likely to be a big productivity boost, but how do you manage decentralized mission-critical data? How do you ensure data integrity, or minimize the risk of data loss? How do you deal with all that data on the network, taking advantage of new data types such as image, video, and audio? The sessions included in the data management and enterprise connectivity track are designed to answer those questions. They're intended to give you the information you need to actually begin to implement client/server solutions, rather than just talking about it. Data management in a client/server environment is often a daunting task. These sessions give you the information you need to face them squarely. DMEC sessions: IBM Digital Library Directions Dr. Willy Chiu, worldwide IBM Digital Library systems manager, IBM Version 2 - The Next Frontier of DB2 for OS/2 and AIX George Baklarz, worldwide technical marketing and support for DB2, IBM DB2 World Wide Web Connection: An Internet Gateway to DB2 Data Josephine Cheng, manager in Database Technology Institute, IBM Distributed Data Access Cathie Dwyer, staff of director of data management technology and architecture, IBM Objects: Where Do They Fit in Today's data Management Solutions? and Transaction Management: Looking Into the Future Norma Andreadis, manager of data management marketing and sales, IBM DB2 Version 4 and Beyond - a New Paradigm in Data Management Tom Lockwood, market opportunities and development manager for data management products, IBM The Challenge of the Decade: How to Manage a Heterogenous Database Environment Doreen Fogle, DataHub technical marketing support, IBM WorkGroup (WG) It comes as no surprise to anyone in business today that business means change ... rapid change. There's no status quo, and even if there was, no one would want it any more. This puts tremendous pressure on employees not only to accept change, but also to actively seek it out. In seeking new ways to do things, users are tearing down boundaries. They're asking for and getting instant access to data ... just about anybody's data, located just about anywhere. They're forming temporary, project-specific workgroups that cross departments, divisions, and even corporations. WorkGroup helps move computing away from the isolated desktop toward the essential frontline activities of the enterprise. By providing the integrated, customizable, and scalable tools needed to put people in touch with the people with the information, WorkGroup supports the new fact of teamwork and helps companies cope in the face of a rapidly changing workplace. About the Course ---------------- Focus on building a new Visual Application Builder application from the ground up. You will concentrate on the Composition Editor, with somewhat less emphasis on the Part Interface and Class Editors. Learn how to create both visual and nonvisual components, and incorporate these and other prefabricated components into applications. You will also learn how hand-written C++ code can be used in your Visual Application Builder applications. Visual Application Builder is an object technology tool provided with IBM VisualAge C++. It offers the quickest and easiest way to create applications using the C++ programming language. Visual Application Builder is based on the "construction-from-parts" software development paradigm, in which applications are assembled from reusable and existing software components, called "parts". Visual Application Builder gets you started by providing a set of parts and interactive visual programming tools to work with those parts. You create your applications by visually assembling and connecting these prefabricated parts. You can extend Visual Application Builder with your own reusable, custom parts, and then use these parts in your applications as you need them. This course can also be tailored to address your unique environment and needs. To find out more information, call 1-800-IBM-TEACh (1-800-426-8322), ext. CUSTOM. For each additional license you order, 4 times over the year you will receive the current newsletter and a Proof of Additional License certificate, which entitles you to make one additional copy of the contents of the current CD volume. Additional licenses work best for Local Area Network development environments. (Example; If you have 10 developers on a LAN, you could buy one regular license and 9 additional licenses.) Q7. I've heard that the DevCon program will grow in the future. What will I see over the next year? A7. The Developer Connection for Image Plus Visualinfo was just recently announced. Future direction for The Developer Connection has not been announced; however, we are considering CDs for specific areas of interest to developers such as: Device Driver Source, AIX, Object Oriented, etc. Q8. Does my license to use the release-level toolkits contained on The Developer Connection CD end if I do not renew my subscription at the end of my annual membership? A8. In general, the license to use the code on each Developer Connection CD is shipped with the CD and expires 120 days after receipt of that issue or upon receipt of the next CD issue, whichever comes first. However, your licenses to the following toolkits continue beyond expiration of your subscription: The Developer's Toolkit for OS/2, Multimedia Presentation Manager Toolkit/2, and Pen for OS/2 Developer's Toolkit. As long as you adhere to the terms and conditions of the agreement, your license to the abovementioned toolkits does not terminate. Q9. Is the Developer Connection program available outside North America? A9. The DevCon program has been announced in the US, Canada, Europe, Middle East, Africa, Mexico, Brazil, and the Asia / Pacific countries. It is currently available in all of these geographies. Description ----------- The AS/400 Developer Connection on CD-ROM, which is also provided to participants in AS/400 Partners In Development Membership, provides a wealth of information selected specifically for the AS/400 solution provider. We have also included the IBM BookManager Library Reader product to ensure that navigation through this information is easy. All you need is a personal computer capable of running OS/2 or Windows, a CD-ROM drive, and the AS/400 Developer Connection on CD-ROM. The IBM BookManager Library Reader product provides a "search" function, so you can enter a topic of interest and receive a list of references where that topic is described. You can also select to view a book based on the title of the book, and then chapters based on the chapter headings. Functions are also included so that material of interest can be printed (a whole topic area, marked text, or even the whole book!) or copied to a file. One of the most popular features is the hypertext linking that provides you a quick easy way to "jump" to related information or more detailed information on the same topic. The information on the CD-ROM is organized on "bookshelves." Each bookshelf contains "books." You select the bookshelf based on the subject matter you are interested in. Books on that shelf are then listed for you. Once you are in a book, you can "page" through it or "search" for what you need, or look through the table of contents and jump directly to the chapter you want. Compatibility Testing Opportunity --------------------------------- This program gives ISVs a testing opportunity to establish and communicate the compatibility of their products with OS/2 Warp standalone, clients, servers, and LAN systems. Resource for Making Wise Purchasing Decisions --------------------------------------------- This program is a resource that customers and their advisors can use to make product purchase decisions with the confidence that a product has been tested for compatibility with OS/2 Warp and LAN Server systems. Consultants, resellers, integrators, OEMs, and other product decision makers can confidently use the list of compatible products in selecting products that meet their customers' needs. Recommending compatible products can help expedite buying decisions and protect a customer's investment. Value of Tested Compatibility ----------------------------- There are literally thousands of software products on the market today to help solve customers' problems. The challenge is finding which products are compatible and can be integrated into a customer's environment. Selecting tested compatible products gives buyers confidence in product decisions and/or recommendations. Such confidence can speed up product decisions and potentially lessen installation and support time. Compatibility Program Description --------------------------------- There are two options of product compatibility. The "Ready for..." option shows compatibility of a software product with either OS/2 Warp or IBM LAN Server with OS/2 Warp. The "Tested and Approved..." option addresses a more sophisticated LAN systems environment to show compatibility, interoperability, and coexistence with many LAN products. Ready for OS/2 Warp and Ready for OS/2 Warp LAN Server ------------------------------------------------------ The "Ready for OS/2 Warp" and "Ready for OS/2 Warp LAN Server" programs offer software developers a set of IBM guidelines to self-test their products for compatibility with a particular version of either OS/2 Warp or IBM LAN Server with OS/2 Warp. This program, with some variations, also exists in some geographies outside the USA and Canada. Developers outside of North America are encouraged to contact their local IBM country representative for their specific program benefits. Call 1-800-IBM-4FAX (U.S.) to request documents 3241 and 3242 for a list of compatible products under the Ready self-test program. In Canada, call 1-800-HELP-FAX. From elsewhere, use a fax telephone to call 1-415-855-4329. Additional information can be obtained by calling 1-800-992-4777 within the U.S. and Canada. Tested and Approved for OS/2 Warp LAN Systems --------------------------------------------- The "Tested and Approved for OS/2 Warp LAN Systems" program offers hardware and software developers the opportunity to have IBM test their product with many IBM and non-IBM products in a LAN systems real-world-like environment.
