The service pack is a self extracting EXE file that contains a complete installation image (without language features). It may be used to: 1) update an existing installation. 2) update an existing installation image. 3) replace an existing administrative image. 4) create a new administrative image with the latest updates. The FTP directory contains separate service pack downloads for each specific processor type under the following sub-directories: image32, image64a. Make sure you download the service pack that is correct for your PC's processor type. 1.1 Options for Applying Service Pack ------------------------------------- 1) To apply the service pack in normal mode, see section "2.0 Update Existing Installation". If you have several systems that need to be updated and you would like to update them from a central location, take the option to unpack the files to a location you specify. Then locate and run the setup.exe from each system that needs to be updated. 2) To apply the service pack using silent mode, see section "2.1 Update Existing Installation Using Silent Mode". 3) If you would like to have a central location that can be maintained for either applying the latest service pack or for a new installation of "IBM i Access for Windows", see sections "3.0 Create Installation Image" and "3.1 Update Installation Image". 4) If you have been using an administrative image for applying updates or for new installations of "IBM i Access for Windows", we recommend switching to the more compact installation image. For switching from an administrative image to an installation image, see section "4.0 Replace an Existing Administrative Image". 5) If you would like to continue to use administrative images for applying updates or for new installations of "IBM i Access for Windows", see section "5.0 Create New Administrative Image with the Latest Updates". 2.0 Update Existing Installation -------------------------------- 1) Download the service pack file for your PC's processor type. FTP DIRECTORY FILE NAME PROCESSOR TYPE ------------- --------------- -------------- image32 SIxxxxx_32.EXE 32-bit (xxxxx is the service pack id) image64a SIxxxxx_64A.EXE AMD 64-bit, Intel 64-bit Xeon 2) Run the SIxxxxx_xx.EXE file. 3) If the installation image will be needed again later, choose the option to unpack the files to a location you specify. Otherwise, the files will be unpacked to a temporary location and automatically removed after the update has finished. 4) Continue through the remainder of the panels to complete the update. 5) After the update completes, reboot your PC. 6) After the service pack is installed, you can delete the downloaded EXE file. 2.1 Update Existing Installation Using Silent Mode -------------------------------------------------- 1) Download the service pack file for your PC's processor type. FTP DIRECTORY FILE NAME PROCESSOR TYPE ------------- --------------- -------------- image32 SIxxxxx_32.EXE 32-bit (xxxxx is the service pack id) image64a SIxxxxx_64A.EXE AMD 64-bit, Intel 64-bit Xeon 2) Run the SIxxxxx_xx.EXE file. 3) Choose the option to unpack the files to a location you specify. Set the location where the files should be unpacked. Select "Next" to continue. The install image will be unpacked to the location you specify. 4) After the files are unpacked, the install wizard will be launched. Do not continue with the install. Exit out of the installation wizard. 5) Locate the setup.exe file in the sub-directory (image32, image64a) where the installation image was unpacked. To perform the update in silent mode, run setup.exe with the following options: setup.exe /S /V" /qn" 6) After the update completes, reboot your PC. 7) You may delete the downloaded EXE file any time after the files are unpacked. 3.0 Create Installation Image ----------------------------- If do not already have a copy of an installation image, the following steps will create an installation image: 1) Locate a source for the 7.1 IBM i Access for Windows installation image. This could be the installation DVD or you may use one of the IBM i locations at: \QIBM\ProdData\Access\Windows\Image32 \QIBM\ProdData\Access\Windows\Image64a The next step assumes the installation DVD is being used and that your local hard drive is C: and your DVD drive is D: During the xcopy, you may see the following prompt: "Does imageXX specify a file name or directory name on the target (F = file, D = directory)?" You should answer D so the directory name is also copied. 2) Copy the processor type(s) you need for your PC(s): xcopy D:\Windows\image32 C:\Install_Image_v7r1\image32 /E /H /Y xcopy D:\Windows\image64a C:\Install_Image_v7r1\image64a /E /H /Y Copy at least one language feature. You may copy as many as you need: xcopy D:\WIndows\MRI2924 C:\Install_Image_v7r1\MRI2924 xcopy D:\WIndows\MRI2931 C:\Install_Image_v7r1\MRI2931 ... You now have a copy of an installation image that may be updated with the latest service pack. This image may be updated multiple times as each new service pack becomes available. 3.1 Update Installation Image ----------------------------- Since each service pack contains a complete set of updates, you only need to apply the latest service pack in order to have a complete set of updates. To update the installation image with the latest service pack: 1) Download the service pack file for your PC's processor type. Set the location to the root directory of a valid installation image. For example: C:\Install_Image_v7r1 Hint: Check the dates of the files in the image32 or image64a sub-directory before and after the update to make sure the files have been updated. Note: For 5.4 servers that have an installation image that was created using Info APAR II14625 Option (3): You should select the installation directory on your 5.4 server. For example: E:\QIBM\Windows\v7r1_IBMiAccess\ (where E: is a mapped network drive from your PC to the 5.4 server) Select "Next" to continue. Allow existing files to be overwritten. Answer "Yes to All" The install image from the service pack will be unpacked to the location specified. 4) After the files are unpacked, the install wizard will be launched. Do not continue with the install. Exit out of the installation wizard. Verify the files were unpacked to the location you specified. 5) After the installation image is updated, you can delete the downloaded EXE file. The installation image will now contain a complete set of updates. You may use this installation image to: - update an existing installation (Run setup.exe) - install a new installation with the latest updates (Run setup.exe) - create a new administrative image with the latest updates. 4.0 Replace an Existing Administrative Image -------------------------------------------- Since Windows Installer patches are no longer provided for administrative images, the recommended alternative is to use an updated installation image. This can be done by modifying the location of your existing administrative image without having to modify the client PCs. The location the client PCs reference when checking for updates is located on the Service tab at: Start -> Programs -> -> IBM i Access for Windows -> -> IBM i Access for Windows Properties On the Service tab, there is a "Source Directory" location. This is the location that is referenced when checking for updates. You may either change this location on each client PC to point to an updated installation image, or you may update your existing administrative image to be an installation image. The installation image can be updated with each service pack as it becomes available. The following steps may be followed to change your existing administrative image to an installation image: 1) Download the service pack file for your PC's processor type. Choose a new location that does not currently exist. For example: C:\Install_Image_v7r1 Select "Next" to continue. The install image will be unpacked to the location you specify. 4) After the files are unpacked, the install wizard will be launched. Do not continue with the install. Exit out of the installation wizard. 5) Assuming you chose to unpack the files to: C:\Install_Image_v7r1 There should also be a sub-directory: C:\Install_Image_v7r1\image32 (or image64a) 6) Rename (or delete) the location of your existing administrative image. Assuming the name of your existing administrative image is: C:\Administrative_Image_v7r1 Example: move C:\Administrative_Image_v7r1 C:\Administrative_Image_v7r1_old 7) Move the imageXX directory in the installation image you just unpacked to the location of the administrative image in the previous step. Example: move C:\Install_Image_v7r1\image32 C:\Administrative_Image_v7r1 Any PC that was checking the administrative image for updates will now be checking the installation image for updates. You may update this installation image with each new service pack as it becomes available by following the steps in section "3.1 Update Installation Image". The installation image that was built by these steps may be used to update any existing PC where 7.1 IBM i Access for Windows was previously installed. However, in its current state, it cannot be used for a new installation. If you would also like to use it for new installations, you will need to copy the language features to it that you need. See steps 1 & 2 of section "3.0 Create Installation Image" for how to add language features to this installation image. 5.0 Create New Administrative Image with the Latest Updates ----------------------------------------------------------- Since Windows Installer patches are no longer provided, there is no way to update an existing administrative image. Instead, you should consider applying updates to your PC from an updated installation image. See "3.1 Update Installation Image" and "4.0 Replace an Existing Administrative Image". If you want to apply updates from an administrative image, you will need to create a new administrative image which contains the updates. To create a new administrative image that contains current updates, you will need to update an installation image using the latest service pack. See section "3.1 Update Installation Image". Then perform the following steps: 1) Locate the setup.exe file in the installation image. It will be in a sub-directory of either image32 or image64a. Make sure you use the correct one depending on your PC's processor type. Run setup.exe with the following option: setup.exe /a Note: You will not be able to create an administrative image from a PC that already has an installation of IBM i Access for Windows. You will get an error. 2) The first language selection is for the language you want to see on the panels while creating the administrative image. 3) The next language selection is the Primary Language panel. This is the language that will be installed as part of the administrative image. The language options will be limited to the language features you have in your installation image. 4) On the Network Location panel, choose the directory where the administrative image will be created. This can be a directory on your local hard disk or any network server. Select "Install". 5) Continue through the panels to complete the installation. The resulting image is known as an administrative image. This administrative image may be used for: - a new installation of IBM i Access for Windows. - updating an existing installation of 7.1 IBM i Access for Windows to the latest service pack. 6.0 Removing the service pack ----------------------------- In order to remove this service pack, you must uninstall IBM i Access for Windows and re-install it using an image that is at an older service level. You may also start with the original installation image on the 7.1 IBM i Access for Windows DVD.
