IBM WebSphere Development Studio Client Advanced Edition, Version 6.0, Installation Guide


Introduction

This installation guide applies to IBM(R) WebSphere(R) Development Studio Client for iSeries Advanced Edition, Version 6.0. This version can be installed only on a PC workstation, and is available only on CD and DVD.

The Readme file contains prerequisite information, limitations of the product, and information not included in the documentation. For information on migrating from WebSphere Development Studio Client Version 4.0, 5.0, 5.1, or 5.1.2, or from WebSphere Development Tools V5R1M0, see the Migration guide. Some migration instructions must be applied before installation, so read that document before you install, if you are migrating.

You might not have to read this installation guide if you want to do a typical installation on your workstation. The booklet packaged with the CDs and DVD contains quick-start installation information. Read it before you read this guide.

  • General notes

    You need to log on as an administrator to install or uninstall the product on a workstation.

    Your CD package contains a number of CDs and one DVD. The DVD contains our product, which contains the same functions as the Rational base product, Rational Application Developer, adapted for the needs of iSeries(TM) programmers. There are other CDs in the package (for example, CODE and VisualAge RPG; DB2 Universal Database) that are not on the DVD. If you have a DVD reader and want to do a typical installation on your workstation, it is easier to install from the DVD.

    Here is a brief summary of the installation process:

    1. Ensure that your workstation meets the requirements described in the Hardware requirements and Software requirements sections below.
    2. Insert Disk 1 (or the DVD) into the appropriate drive of your workstation.
    3. If installation does not start automatically:
      1. Click Start, and then click Run.
      2. Type Y:setup, where Y is the CD or DVD drive letter. Press Enter.
    4. Follow the on-screen instructions for WebSphere Development Studio Client Advanced Edition, Version 6.0. If you are using the set of CDs, the InstallShield wizard periodically prompts you to switch disks. Depending on what optional components you select for installation, you might be asked to skip some disks; do not be alarmed.
      Note:
      Installation might take a long time because certain fix packs are installed automatically. Further fix packs might require Rational Product Updater. See Installing updates for further information.
    5. If you have a workspace from a previous version of Development Studio Client, you will see a message saying "Please Wait...Completing the Install" when you start the product the first time.

    CoOperative Development Environment (CODE) and VisualAge RPG are not included in this installation. If you want to install them, find the CODE and VisualAge RPG CD. You need to install CODE if you want to view your DDS source as it will appear on a screen. This enables you to see how Web settings will appear in your WebFacing applications before converting the source and running the application.

    You cannot directly install the product to a LAN server. You can, however, copy the product files to a LAN server and launch the installation to a local machine. See Copying the product to a LAN server.


    IBM Rational Software Development Platform

    The IBM Rational(R) Software Development Platform is a common development environment that is shared by the following products:

    If you install any of these products, the Rational Software Development Platform is automatically installed as part of the product. If you have more than one of these products installed, the development platform is installed only once. All of these products share the same workbench or integrated development environment, called the workbench, and each product adds function to the workbench by contributing plug-ins. A plug-in is a software module that adds function to an existing program or application.

    Starting Rational and WebSphere software products

    When you open the Start menu, regardless of what Rational or WebSphere product you have installed, the top-level menu entry will always be IBM Rational.

    Depending on how many products you have installed, you will have a subfolder for each product under IBM Rational. If, for example, you have both Rational Functional Tester and Development Studio Client installed, you can see a subfolder for each of these. These subfolders contain links to product specific information (such as readme files), as well as a launchpoint for the workbench. The launchpoint has the name of the product (such as Development Studio Client), and it starts the workbench.

    You can also start the workbench by clicking the Rational Software Development Platform option, under the IBM Rational menu.

    Migration and coexistence

    Note:
    Be sure to read the section Installing updates if you have more than one Rational product installed and you want to install Development Studio Client. It contains important information about release levels.

    The following chart illustrates what happens when you attempt to install more than one product, common to the Rational Software Development Platform, on the same machine. (In the following chart, the vertical axis represents products already installed, while the horizontal axis represents products that you are attempting to install).

    The terms Block, Share, and Upgrade are defined after the chart.

    Uninstallation

    Note:
    The workbench is installed in the installation directory of the first product you install that uses the Rational Software Development Platform. It is not reinstalled with any other products, so if you upgrade your first product, you should not remove your first installation directory after the upgrade has completed, as it still contains the files for the workbench.

    The Rational Software Development Platform Launchpad

    When you run launchpad.exe or insert Disk 1 or the DVD into your disk drive, a launchpad opens from which you can install a number of products or components. These are located on the other CDs contained in the media package. Documentation (section Box with a 3 in it in the picture) is located on Disk 1.

    This outline of the launchpad items can help you decide which ones you want to install. You must install WebSphere Development Studio Client Advanced Edition first. The launchpad stays on the screen while you install Development Studio Client. Afterwards, you can install additional components one at a time. (You can also install them in parallel, but it might be hard on your system.)

    The links in the third column are to sections in the Rational Application Developer Installation Guide.

    National Language Support

    The product installs one language according to the user locale setting in Microsoft Windows. If you change the locale after the installation is complete, product components and help screens might not display the correct language. To change languages, completely uninstall the product as described in the Uninstalling WebSphere Development Studio Client Advanced Edition section, change the locale, and then install the product again.


    Workstation requirements


    Hardware requirements

    Development Studio Client requires the following hardware:

    Temporary space

    Because the product needs extra temporary space during installation, you can change the default drive for temporary space to another drive.

    To move your temporary space:

    1. Open the Control Panel.
    2. Double-click the System icon and go to Advanced > Environment Variables.
    3. Under System Variables, select TEMP and click edit.
    4. For the Variable Value field, enter D:\temp, or whichever drive you want to use for temporary storage.
    5. Click OK.
    6. Repeat steps 3-5 for the TMP variable.

    Software requirements

    WebSphere Development Studio Client Advanced Edition, Version 6.0, can be installed on Microsoft(R) Windows(R) 2000 and Windows XP. It cannot be installed on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT(R), or Windows Me.

    The product requires one of the following operating systems.

    Several specific operating system requirements are listed in the following table.

      • To view certain tours and tutorials that are included with the online help, Flash Player, V6.0r65 or later.

    • OS/400(R) V5R1, V5R2, or V5R3
    • Some components need additional PTFs. The PTF information is available at http://www.ibm.com/software/awdtools/iseries.
    • OS/400 is needed only if the programming objects are located on the iSeries server or the applications contain backend code on the iSeries server.
    • To compile RPG, COBOL, C or C++ on the iSeries server using the Remote System Explorer, 5722-WDS (including option 60) must be installed.

    • OS/400 V5R1, V5R2, or V5R3
    • WebSphere Application Server V4.0 or later for iSeries
    • Java runtime environment (JRE) V1.3 or later (This installation puts the JRE on the client but not the server)
    • A Web browser


    Migration, upgrade and coexistence issues

    You can migrate from WebSphere Development Studio Client V4.x.x., 5.0.x, or 5.1.x to Version 6.0. Version 6.0 can also coexist with any of these versions. See the Migration Guide for more migration information.

    See the "IBM Rational Software Development Platform" section for more information about coexisting with other Rational and WebSphere products that use the workbench.

    If you have a beta version of IBM WebSphere Development Studio Client, or any version of WebSphere Development Tools, please remove it before installing Version 6.0.

    If you have a previous version of Agent Controller or any software derived from the Hyades Data Collection Engine, you should stop it, uninstall it, and clean up any leftover files before installing this version of Agent Controller.


    Installing WebSphere Development Studio Client Advanced Edition

    You can install the product from the DVD or CD-ROM, or copy the product files to a LAN server and install it from the server to a local machine. See Copying the product to a LAN server. An installation wizard is provided, but you can also install from a command prompt.


    Installing from the CD-ROM

    Figure 1 contains a diagram showing product names and CD distribution. To install the product from CDs, follow these steps:

    1. Check that you have enough space. In addition to the permanent space required to install the product,
    2. Read "Migration, upgrade and coexistence issues" before you begin the installation procedure.
    3. Ensure that your user ID does not contain double-byte characters, such as Chinese characters.
    4. Insert disk 1 into your CD drive.
    5. If autorun is enabled on your system, the launchpad automatically opens. If autorun is disabled on your system, run launchpad.exe from the root of the first installation CD to display the Rational Software Development Platform launchpad.

      Tip: You can bypass the launchpad and go straight to the installation wizard by running setup.exe from the \setup directory on Disk 1.

    6. From the launchpad, select the first item, Install IBM WebSphere Development Studio Client Advanced Edition V6.0.
    7. Wait for the installation wizard to open, then click Next to continue the installation.
    8. Follow the on-screen instructions for tasks such as reading the license agreement and specifying the target installation directory.
    9. In the Features window, you can select the Development Studio Client features that you want to install. You can return to the installation wizard and install the optional features later.
      1. By default, the installation program installs the integrated development environment (the workbench).
      2. If you want to install the user interface and documentation for supported national languages other than English, select Language Pack. By default, this feature is not selected by default unless your system locale is a supported national language other than English.

        Supported national languages are Brazilian Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, and Traditional Chinese.

        Note: If you select the optional Language Pack feature and then cancel the installation shortly afterwards while files are being copied, subsequent installations will show some anomalies. On a subsequent installation, the status of the language pack will show as installed on the Feature panel. You can reinstall the Language Pack feature to copy the proper files to your disk. In this situation, at the end of the installation you might receive a message stating that One or more errors occurred during replacement of files. You can safely ignore this error message.

      3. By default, the Enterprise Generation Language (EGL) feature is not installed. EGL is a powerful, high-level language for creating complex business applications. It handles the complexities of underlying technologies (such as, database access, message queues, and J2EE) so application developers can focus on their business logic. EGL allows you to program productively with a higher level of abstraction, ultimately producing Java or COBOL code. To install the EGL plug-in, select the Enterprise Generation Language (EGL) check box. To install the EGL for iSeries plug-in, select the Enterprise COBOL Generation for iSeries check box. The iSeries component can be installed only if the base EGL component is installed.
      4. With Portal Toolkit you can produce Web interfaces that split a browser window up into application areas, known as portlets. This option is selected by default, but you can clear the check box if you do not plan to do portal development. Portal Toolkit is on a separate CD, and you can always install it later.
      5. The examples for Eclipse plug-in development are for developers who want to extend the workbench by creating their own plug-in tools. To install these examples, select the Examples for Eclipse Plug-In Development check box.
    10. Click Next to display summary information for your installation. The disk space requirement shows only what you need for the files. The actual disk space needed can be considerably greater, especially if your disk is formatted with a FAT32 file system.

      Note:
    11. Click Next to install the product.
    12. If you receive a warning about a problem with registering the license towards the end of the install, follow these steps:
      1. In the \logs subdirectory in your installation directory, open license.log with a text editor.
      2. If license.log contains either of the following lines, ensure that your system clock is set correctly, and then start the product.
        486604803  The requested license has expired
        486604805  The start dates for all licenses have not yet occurred
        
    13. The installation program takes some time to set up the development environment and initialize Eclipse. Eventually you will see a message confirming that the installation is complete. Click Next.

    Other installation choices

    You can return to the launchpad and install these features at any time.

    Note:

    Installing from DVD

    The installation from the DVD is very similar to the installation from CDs, except that there is only one DVD. Follow the instructions under Installing from the CD-ROM, except use the supplied DVD instead of the set of CDs. When using the DVD, you do not have to switch disks. You still have to use the CDs for the other options on the launchpad, however.


    Installing from a command prompt

    If you want to install the product from a command prompt without using the graphical interface, run the following command from the \setup directory on the first installation CD:

     setup.exe -console
    

    Canceling the installation through the console mode is limited. You can cancel the installation during the preparation steps of the installation process, but there is not a supported method of canceling the installation after files have begun to be copied to the hard drive. Clicking Ctrl+C will force the installation process to quit, but this is not recommended, and you will have to do some cleanup.


    Invoking a silent installation

    The Development Studio Client installation program can be run silently if you do not want to interact with the installation wizard.

    Setting up your local copies

    Prior to silently installing the product, you must set up your local copies:

    1. Read "Migration, upgrade and coexistence issues" before you begin the installation procedure.
    2. Ensure that the user ID that you are using does not contain double-byte characters, such as Chinese characters.
    3. Create a network installation image (copy) as described in "Copying the product to a LAN server". If you only want to install Development Studio Client, you only need to copy the information from the first three CDs.

    Silently installing the default features to the default directory

    The following features are installed by default when silently installing WebSphere Development Studio Client Advanced Edition:

    To install WebSphere Development Studio Client Advanced Edition silently with only the default selected features to the default directory system_drive:\Program Files\IBM\Rational\SDP\6.0 :

    1. Set up your copies as described in "Setting up your local copies", if you have not done so already.
    2. From the command line, change to the \disk1\setup directory in the temporary directory (for example, network_drive:\install_image\disk1\setup) that you created in a previous section.
    3. Run the following command:
      setup.exe -silent 
      
    4. Silently installing WebSphere Development Studio Client Advanced Edition may take a while to complete. To determine when the installation completes, you may monitor the \logs directory in the default installation directory periodically. If the license.log file appears, then the silent installation has completed.

    Silently installing to a different directory

    By changing the installLocation parameter, you can install WebSphere Development Studio Client Advanced Edition to a different directory. For example, if you want "d:\my softdev" to be your installation directory, follow the same steps that were just described, but run the following command:

    setup.exe -silent -P installLocation="d:\my softdev"
    

    (In this example, only the default features are installed.)

    Silently installing additional WebSphere Development Studio Client Advanced Edition features

    WebSphere Development Studio Client Advanced Edition provides you with a sample response file that silently installs all the default features. This response file is called responsefile.txt and it is located in the \disk1\util directory. If you want to change the response file to install other features, it is recommended that you first make a backup copy of responsefile.txt.

    You can update the response file to install one or more optional WebSphere Development Studio Client Advanced Edition feature. The following table shows the response file options and their corresponding entries in the response file.

    To silently install any of the optional features:

    1. Copy responsefile.txt to a new file, for example myresponsefile.txt.
    2. Edit your copy of the response file.
    3. Locate the line containing the installation feature name shown in the above table. For example, if you want to install the examples for Eclipse plug-in development, you would locate the following line in the response file:# -P feature_examples_win32.active=<value> line in the response file.
    4. Make the following changes to this line:
      1. Remove the # in the first column.
      2. Change <value> to true.

      In this example, this line would be changed to:

         -P feature_examples_win32.active=true
      
    5. Save your changes.
    6. Set up your copies as described in "Setting up your local copies", if you have not done so already.
    7. From the command line, change to the \disk1\setup directory in the temporary directory (for example, network_drive:\install_image\disk1\setup) that you created in a previous section.
    8. When you run the response file, add the -options parameter and the fully qualified name of your response file as shown below:
      setup.exe -silent -options "Your_directory\myresponsefile.txt"
      

      where Your_directory is the fully qualified directory name of where your response file resides.

      Note:
      To verify that your response file is being used, run this command first (that is, before you run a silent install) without the -silent option, and verify that your settings are being registered in the installation wizard. If they are not, there is a problem with your response file settings or command syntax.
    9. Silently installing WebSphere Development Studio Client Advanced Edition may take a while to complete. To determine when the installation completes, you can monitor the \logs subdirectory in your installation directory periodically. If the license.log file appears, then the silent installation has completed.

    Installing from a LAN server

    Copying the product to a LAN server

    Although you cannot install the product on a LAN drive, as an administrator you can copy all the files from the DVD or CDs onto a LAN server. Your users can then install the product from the server to their workstations.

    You need approximately 7.5 GB of disk space to store CD or DVD content on the disk.

    To copy the files from the CDs:

    1. Log in as root user.
    2. Create a directory (for example, install_image) on a network drive where you want to store the files.
    3. Insert the first Development Studio Client installation CD into your CD drive.
    4. Under the temporary directory, create a subdirectory called disk1. This subdirectory must be called disk1 and it must be in lower case.
    5. Copy all the files and directories on the first installation CD to the disk1 subdirectory in the temporary directory.
    6. Repeat steps 3, 4, and 5 to copy the contents of the other six CDs to subdirectories called disk2, disk3, . . . disk7.

    These are all the core installation files. If you want the installation files for any of the following optional features, copy the contents of the appropriate CDs into your temporary directory.

    To copy from DVD to a server:

    1. Create a directory to store product files.
    2. Insert the installation DVD in the DVD-ROM drive. Ensure that the installation setup file does not run. If it does, click Exit on the launchpad when it displays.
    3. Copy all files from DVD to the storage directory with the following command: xcopy Z:*.* Y:\wdscimage /e /q where Z is the DVD-ROM drive letter and Y:\wdscimage is an existing destination drive and path.

    After the product is copied to a LAN server, it can be installed onto a workstation from the server. The installation must be done from the workstation.

    Installing from a LAN server to a workstation

    To install from the LAN server to a workstation:

    1. Open a Command Prompt window on the workstation.
    2. Enter a net use command to connect to the LAN server drive where the product was copied. Ensure that at least 4.5 GB disk space is available on the workstation.
    3. On the drive that is mapped to the LAN server, navigate to the Disk1 folder.
    4. Double-click launchpad.exe and follow the installation instructions.

    You can also run this command from Windows Explorer. Click Tools > Map Network Drive.


    Installing from an iSeries server

    Copying the product to an iSeries server

    An administrator or user can copy all the files from the DVD to an iSeries server. This allows users to install from the iSeries server to a workstation.

    To copy the DVD or the CDs to an iSeries server, follow the instructions given under Copying the product to a LAN server. See Figure 3 for an illustration.

    After the product is copied to the iSeries server, it can be installed onto a workstation from the server. The installation must be done on the workstation.

    Installing from an iSeries server to a workstation

    To install from the iSeries server to a workstation:

    1. Map a network drive to the iSeries drive where you copied the product files. Ensure that at least 4.5 GB disk space is available on the workstation.
    2. Double-click the directory.
    3. On the drive that is mapped to the LAN server, navigate to the Disk1 folder.
    4. Double-click launchpad.exe and follow the installation instructions.

    You do not need to reboot your workstation after installing the product.


    Starting Development Studio Client

    Because the product is part of the Rational Software Development Platform, it will be in a folder in the Start menu called IBM Rational. This is different from previous versions. Your work in the product is stored in a directory called a workspace. You can set it to whatever you want.

    To start the product:

    1. Select Start > Programs > IBM Rational > WebSphere Development Studio Client Advanced Edition > WebSphere Development Studio Client Advanced Edition to start the product.
    2. The first time that you start the product, a dialog box opens, specifying the default workspace directory. The default directory is C:\Documents and Settings\youruserid\IBM\rationalsdp6.0. You can change the name and location of the workspace.
    3. By default, the Use this as the default and do not ask again check box is cleared. If you leave it like this, you can switch workspaces whenever you start the product.

      Tip: If you select the Use this as the default and do not ask again check box, the software will use the workspace from the previous session. You might want to indicate your workspace each time you start the product if you maintain different workspaces for different projects. You can change the default value after you have started the product by selecting File > Switch Workspace and browsing to (or creating) a folder on your local system.

    4. Click OK. There is a one-time delay while the workspace structure is created.

    The workbench first opens to a series of welcome pages that provide a product overview and information about what's new, plus links to tutorials, samples, and external Web resources. Spend some time exploring these options, and be sure to scroll. Notice as well the sources of information that are available from the Help menu. To display the help, click Help > Help Contents.


    Installing updates

    The Rational Product Updater is a tool that keeps track of all Rational Software Development Platform products installed on your system and searches for and installs product updates and optional new features. This new tool replaces Update Manager.

    The Product Updater is installed automatically when you install the first Rational software development product on your system. All subsequent Rational software development products that you install are automatically registered with this tool. You can search for and automatically install updates to each product:

    Any dependencies between updates are automatically enforced. The Product Updater allows you to manage updates to all of your Rational software development products from a single location. It even updates itself when needed.

    The Product Updater also enables you to perform these tasks:

    To start the Product Updater on your workstation and find information on using the tool:

    1. Select Start > Programs > IBM Rational Rational Product Updater.
    2. To access more detailed information about the updater, select Help > Help Contents.
    Note:
    If you have other Rational products installed and you want to install Development Studio Client, the existing products must be at the correct fix pack level first. If they are not, a dialog box opens, asking you to update both Rational Product Updater and the existing products before you install Development Studio Client. Perform the following steps:
    1. Cancel the installation of Development Studio Client.
    2. Update Rational Product Updater to Version 6.0.0.4.
    3. Run Rational Product Updater to update the existing Rational products to the level shown in Table 2.
    4. Restart the installation of Development Studio Client.

    The following table shows the correct fix pack levels for Rational products:

    If you are not sure what Rational products you have installed, check Start > Programs > IBM Rational.


    Uninstalling WebSphere Development Studio Client Advanced Edition

    Important:
    A user with administrator authority must uninstall the product.

    To uninstall Development Studio Client:

    1. Close the product.
    2. Open the Control Panel, then open the Add/Remove Programs window. Select IBM WebSphere Development Studio Client Advanced Edition 6.0 and click Change/Remove.
    3. Select Remove product.
    4. Follow the uninstallation instructions.

    You do not need to reboot your workstation after uninstalling the product.

    All files in any plug-ins or features directories are automatically deleted, including your data and third-party plug-ins that reside in any of these directories. Your workspace directory, which contains your work, is not deleted. Some other directories remain:

    If you try to partially uninstall one or more of the Development Studio Client required features, you receive an error message similar to this:

    Invalid selection:
    Unable to uninstall ide_required: root is not set for uninstall
    

    To work around this problem, select the Product Uninstallation check box. The uninstallation page of the wizard is reinitialized so that you can now uninstall the product entirely, or clear the selection of features that you do not want to uninstall.


    Troubleshooting: problems and workarounds

    If you have trouble with installation, check the following things.


    Problem Comments
    Not enough temporary disk space available. The installation process uses disk space in the directories specified by the TEMP and TMP environment variables. If an "out of temporary storage" message occurs during installation, change the TEMP and TMP variables to another drive that has enough space. The installation might require up to 500 MB of temporary storage.
    Installation seems to stall. If installation does not appear to be progressing:
    • Installation messages can sometimes be hidden behind other windows and they might require a response.
    • If installing from a server, determine if other demands on the server are slowing the installation.
    You clicked Cancel during installation Installation of the component that was installing is finished but no remaining components are installed. Uninstall and then reinstall.
